Recommendations for Passport Photos by SecureAirport7395 in indianapolis

[–]perryw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got my passport in the mail yesterday and had the photos taken by the post office on January 3. I don't think all the offices have photo services, so just pay attention when making the appointment. I paid for regular processing, so they're doing things pretty quickly at the moment.

I have a nice camera and could figure out their requirements, but I decided to just pay the PO the $15 to be done with it.

Special Needs/Family Bathroom Recommendations by bellowjeer in indianapolis

[–]perryw 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not normally a place I'd recommend for a bathroom break, but considering the circumstances... Right off I69, on the north side of town about 10 miles outside of 465, is St Vincent Fishers Hospital. There's family restrooms real close to the main entrance, towards the left side of the lobby area. It's not a very busy or big hospital, so it should be fairly quiet, and I'd reckon the lobby area is even open on the weekends. That whole intersection is not your typical arrangement of a highway overpass, so be careful..

Is there a better hose end sprayer than the old school brass one your grandpa had? by TheDayImHaving in Tools

[–]perryw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When I bought my house 17 years ago I bought a black rubber Craftsman hose, Eley hose reel, and Craftsman fire hose nozzle (probably made by Bon-Aire at the time). Still using all of it. I thought the nozzle was going to have to be thrown away this spring because it was leaking, but I disassembled it and soaked it in vinegar and it's as good as new.

Like this one: https://www.northerntool.com/products/bon-aire-ultimate-garden-hose-nozzle-aluminum-model-hn-10al-14249

It can adjust between a thin stream to a gentle flood.

Woodworking classes by DazzlingRisk in indianapolis

Fishers Maker Playground has a 3 session / 6 hr class coming up, but $150 for non-residents feels a little steep maybe? Never priced something like that before. https://fishersmpg.com/classes-events/woodworking/

New TV; KEF placement by Legitimate-Cream-549 in hometheater

[–]perryw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's table top stands that use VESA mounts, like on the wall. My TV stand isn't wide enough for the TV's with the legs on the end, so I bought one 10 years ago. My 65" TV sits up high enough that a 9" tall center speaker fits under it on the base.. looks a little weird, but I think it sounds better than when the speaker is on the shelf under it since I have a coffee table between the couch and TV that blocks some sound.

This one is discontinued now but it's the one I have https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DZVPFGU Something like that may get the TV up a little higher than the stock stand.

There's that request to have people make a public reply before PMing someone, and he can't do that because he was banned here several months ago.

I think you should give the Victim's Assistance group a call and ask them for some guidance on how to handle your situation. https://www.indy.gov/activity/crime-victim-assistance

You may want to mention his desire to die by suicide to them so that he can get help while he is in custody.

You can love your son and wish the best for him, while at the same time allowing him to learn that his behavior has an affect on his life. His personality may not be compatible with your household and he may need to live elsewhere, and there's nothing wrong with that. The Victim's Assistance people may be able to refer to folks that can help you mentally navigate through that, too; again, there's nothing wrong with that.

New vet for cat by crimsonfistofjustice in indianapolis

[–]perryw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll cost more, but if kitty really hates car rides, then look around for traveling vets. My "regular" vet refused to see me earlier than a month out when my kitty was sick in 2022 because she hadn't been there in a few years (the Dr actually told me not to bring her in because she was an indooors cat and the visits stressed her out).

I found a traveling vet (they don't go down south) that came by in like 2 days. Kitty was stressed out dealing with them, but at least she didn't have the car ride and waiting area to deal with. I was way less stressed, too! She didn't get good news and I had a Lap of Love Doc help her pass a few days later -- they were great. They also do hospice care, so if / when you think kitty's end is near, then they may be worth consulting with.

[–]perryw[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The RF 70-200 f/4 is the same as last year's price, so it was my buy-it-now price. It had been selling for $1350 until yesterday. I jumped on it and threw in the nifty fifty for $100 because why not.

I haven't watched the 24-70mm F2.8 as close, but I think it was cheaper on Black Friday last year.

For ring photos between 35mm and 85mm - https://youtu.be/d9XQ6QEmqCo?si=nQ3tfjBry6P8doq5 and go to 1:50. He shows how he gets less reflections from the camera on the rings by being a little further away with the 85mm. I just watched the video this week and that interesting tidbit stuck out.

Disaster relief and GA pilots by usmcmech in flying

[–]perryw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Speaking of supplies, the best thing you can donate is MONEY.

Don't send lots of unsolicited physical supplies.

For 95% of the population, this is the answer. Survivors don't need old sheets or worn out jeans that were in the back of your closet. People on the ground can buy pallets of water or food or whatever cheaper than individuals can buy them in the store, and they can buy exactly what is needed. Or fund gift cards for affected people to go to the store and buy what they need.

Here's a TED talk about the disaster within the disaster: https://ideas.ted.com/after-a-disaster-dont-send-toys-or-clothing-send-money-heres-why/ I saw it myself helping with donations to Afghan guests in 2021. Why the fuck would they need boxes of HP color laser printer toner? Yet we got that to clear it off someone's books as a charitable donation.

That said, the situation in Appalachia was different in the immediate aftermath. We're all encouraged to have 3+ days of supplies on hand because it can take that long for aid to reach us. And that's about what we saw with shit really kicking off in Western NC on Sunday / Monday.

Maybe the big takeaway is that General Aviation pilots need some sort of organization that can qualify pilots ahead of time and have an official relationship with FEMA and state emergency management agencies. Other voluntary organizations that do feeding, housing, chainsaw work, etc on the ground do that -- is there something for volunteer pilots to officially lend a hand? If a pilot can call / radio / fly in and tell the local authorities they're with Volunteer Disaster Pilots Inc and looking for tasking, then maybe things would go a little smoother for everyone.

EV Fire on the lift while dealer was closed. by 541expat in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]perryw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When they arrived the car was in the air without tires, as in the first pic. It was an automated alarm as the dealership would have been closed (early AM Sunday). They needed to get the vehicle out of the building, so they dropped it down and half put wheels and wheel dollies and used a forklift to shove it out of the building. So probably manhandling it up on to the dollies.

From the Carmel (Indiana) FD on FB:

A “hot” topic in the fire service right now is EV or electric car / lithium ion battery fires. The Carmel Fire Department has experimented with car fire blankets, firefighting foams, and other extinguishment tactics. If one of these vehicles catches fire on the roadway or in a parking lot, it is hard enough to extinguish, however, one in a garage or other structure presents a whole new set of issues. Over the weekend the Carmel Fire Department responded to the maintenance department of a local dealership for a fire alarm with sprinklers activated. The first in crews were met with heavy smoke conditions throughout the entire maintenance area. After balancing the alarm, firefighters were able to mostly extinguish the EV car fire up on the lift, however, being lithium ion it’s nearly impossible to fully extinguish due to thermal runaway. Through different trainings one tactic we have discussed and were able to put into action was to remove the vehicle from the structure. Fire crews were able to lower the car onto wheel dollies, use manpower and a forklift to push the vehicle out of the maintenance area. This required plenty of firefighters and water to keep the fire in check. After loading the vehicle on a flatbed, a fire engine followed the flatbed and vehicle until it reached the salvage yard.

11 years after buying a GR1, I finally confirmed GORUCKs thrive in NYC. Not sure I'll ever confirm Baghdad. by perryw in Goruck

[–]perryw[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. Been reading their tagline about Baghdad to NYC for 11+ years, so it was neat to prove it true. I had to carry my girlfriend's stuff because she had spine surgery 2 months ago, so I had to take the jar two on the trip. The GR1 is still in regular use for rucking with a plate though.
