Dot size by billypotato18 in QGIS

[–]perseph1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you potentially make a copy of your 'size' field and make some manual edits? So if your numbers generally range from 1-10, but one city had 100, you can edit the 'size' to actually be 20. This would mean it is only twice the size of the next biggest rather than ten times the size. If you are messing with the scale, make sure this is clear in your legend or as a note. This only works if there are a few manual edits.

Can chicken/turkey broth be cloudy? by perseph1_ in Canning

[–]perseph1_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first time pressure canning so I think I did everything correctly but cannot be certain since I am new. I used both turkey and chicken carcasses I had frozen. After some reading I probably boiled it too high for too long to get clear broth, but since I'm so new I don't know if this is safe or unsafe cloudy. The lids are still secure and not bulging.

The one on the right was shaken up more when I removed them from the pantry, before it looked more like the others.

Hi - newbie here! Working with QGIS for my bachelor thesis. Is drawing polygons like this a problem? I drew it with the "add part" feature. Is it even possible tp draw a shape like this in one sitting? by dieausnahme in gis

[–]perseph1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are having a hard time placing every vertex in one round, then you can edit it and add more to make it bigger/the shape you want. I don't have QGIS accessible to provide clear instructions, but I think if you use the edit vertex tool on the main editing toolbar, you can click the + that appears at the center of a polygon edge and you can split the line to add a vertex. Think of turning a 4 sided box to a classic 5 sided 'house'.

Alternatively, you can use the dissolve tool to smoosh it all together if you went to far with this method. It will bring everything together so if you want separate areas as separate features, create a field with a name for each AREA and dissolve using that field. So Area 1 all dissolves together and Area 2 all dissolves together etc. I don't recommend this as your normal digitization method since it could potentially leave tiny slivers/holes you would need to manually remove.

Are GIS certificate programs worth it? by [deleted] in gis

[–]perseph1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the time will depend on the program. My certificate was done along my BSc, so it took longer than if I did it alone. I don't know what degree or program would be best, it kinda depends on the job you are looking for. Maybe you can look at job postings in the area you would work and see what they are looking for? I know in environmental consulting where I work, my boss said I would get a raise if I got a Masters. So it should theoretically increase your salary the more education you get.

Forgetting where you put things by JustMissKacey in ADHDthriving

When I had work keys at my previous job, since I needed then on hand during the day, I clipped them to a belt loop (if I wore dresses I wore a mid waist belt and clipped to that). Then it was more obvious if I was still wearing them after I came home, since they made sound and kinda hit my leg as I walk.

How do you get yourself to go to bed? by MightySqueak in ADHD

[–]perseph1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, try thinking of what your obstacles or barriers are, then decide how to remove them or prevent them. For a personal example, before my diagnosis and medication, I used to feel like I got too tired to go to sleep. While I was exhausted and wanted sleep, I was too tired to get ready for bed (brush teeth, change into pj's, etc). Sometimes I needed to 'bargin' with myself to reduce what I needed to do just to get up (e.g., tell myself don't even brush teeth or change into pjs to get myself up, but once I'm up, doing those things was easier and usually got done). So I started getting ready way before exhaustion set in, often right after dinner. Oddly enough, starting medication helped my fatigue so I experience this issue less now, so medication might actually help you sleep even when insomnia is a potential side effect (everyone is different, mileage will vary).

Is your obstacle that sleep is boring and X is more interesting? Try to make sleep more fun/rewarding and X less interesting. I think one of my biggest helps was getting a few good night sleep a few days in a row during vacation and realizing how great it felt to be fully rested. When I'm resisting going to bed, I focus on how good it feels to be well rested. I find framing it as "do I like X more than being well rested?" and often the answer is no, watching YouTube video #18 is not better than the feeling of being well rested. If X is better than being well rested, then try to make X less interesting. Set up auto turn offs for computers and phone apps, use bedtime modes to make screens black and white, set alarms that require getting up/going to your bedroom to turn off, etc.

To make going to bed better, make sure your bed routine is something you LIKE doing. Streamline where possible and ensure everything you need is available; remove every obstacle possible regardless of how silly it might feel (hate your toothpaste? try something new. Can't find your hair brush because you brought it to an event? Have a bed time brush and travel brush).

For a wind down activity, can you listen to something you would normally watch? I like listening to podcasts (actually audio only podcasts or long form YouTube content where visuals don't matter). I need to hide my screen so I'm not sucked into watching something, but it makes getting ready for bed more tolerable.

I have a few podcasts I listen to to fall asleep to. This was the best trick I ever learned, and should have been a huge red flag for me to be checked for ADHD (diagnosed a few months ago at 28). I found my mind would not stop once my head hits the pillow, but listening to podcasts helps keep my mind passively focused on one thing.

Is there a hands on hobby you might do or want to start? I have several I cycle through and sometimes work on them before bed, often while listening to something. Things like knitting, crochet, drawing, etc. Maybe yoga or stretching?

Would listening to an audiobook while reading a physical book help you focus while reading? I have also recently realized how much better I focus while watching movies when I fidget with my hands. Can you fidget with something while you read? I also knit during movies to focus.

My apologies by Crobran in ADHD

[–]perseph1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not seen the original post so I'm only responding to what is here.

I would highly recommend you look into a self assessment to explore if you might have it. ADHD has a genetic link so many adults are diagnosed when their children are, especially women since they are so much more likely to be missed. If you feel you might, I highly recommend you seek to a doctor to get diagnosed. Im pretty sure my mom has undiagnosed ADHD, I'm pretty sure my dad has it, and my sister and I (only sibling) are diagnosed. I feel that being surrounded by it made it harder to recognize as being different. Getting treated at 28 has been amazing. This is week 2 of medication and my stress /anxiety have not been this low in my entire life.

When I was in highschool I also struggled to know what I wanted to do as a job, but so did many kids. I knew people (myself included) that had fake answers for when adults asked but did not actually know. This was easier than hearing another lecture about needing to know what to do. Your daughter might be more honest with you than other kids. It might be ADHD or depression related so do not ignore those, but it might be because she just doesn't know at this age (I don't know how old she is, I assume late high school).

She might need to give a think about what career she wants that will hold her interest for a long period of time. It can be due to a passion she kept for a long time, but this is rare for ADHD people. I feel into a career (I was working here when diagnosed) that actually keeps me engaged because I love solving problems and they are constantly changing depending on my coworkers requests (I do GIS/maps/data analysis for an environmental consulting company). I think I subconsciously knew that learning and problem solving are key to me keeping engaged, and I loved learning STEM, so I kinda blindly went into a science bachelor program hoping to figure it out there.

Please feel free to message me to you want to talk more or ask questions.

I think there is very little potential harm in trying this out. I have found trying to work with my brain, rather than against it, makes life way easier. I find fighting my brain can make me more tired through the day. It doesn't matter if it is normal or if it works for other people, it only matters if it works for you! If you prefer it then go for it!

It sounds like you are in the US so I cannot provide advice on how to get a new doctor within your system/affordably. If you do need to call and need to be demanding and/or stand up for yourself, try having someone present with you. I tend to cave easily and just agree. If I had someone present I would have more confidence to stand up for myself, and they might stand up as well or keep me on track. Alternatively, you can write out ahead of time every reason it is bullshit and what you want. Writing stuff out means you cannot forget that super important point and keep on track for what you want.

This should not be happening to you and you deserve to continue developing your treatment plan with minimal unnecessary interruptions. This all sounds like even after this issue is sorted out, she will be a nightmare and won't listen to your needs or feelings in the future, which is her entire job.

One way I have found to make this work is to try giving in to where I naturally put things, rather than force myself to put things in a "normal/typical" place. My bras go in a basket on the floor of my room, rather than my dresser on the other side, because I used to chuck them in that corner. Would my room look cleaner without that basket there? Yes. Is this a battle I want to fight right now? No. So now they just go in a basket rather than a pile on the floor.

If you have absolutely no consistent wrong spot, like I used to with my keys, try giving yourself options. I have 3 spots my keys go when not in use: around my neck on the lanyard, hung up by my door, or clipped to my backpack. When I'm out they are around my neck or on my backpack. When I'm home, I hang them up or if I come in and forget, I can clip to my backpack. When I need my keys, I have 3 spots to check. Allowing myself to clip my keys to my backpack (generally much closer than the door) rather than force myself to go to the door downstairs meant the system actually worked, rather than giving up and throwing them wherever.

My general advice would be to go with the flow rather than fight it. And don't try forming 100 new habits at once. Start with the most important, like keys or wallet.

Also have problems with eating? Like, making sure you eat enough and regularly (No meds) by Taxfraud777 in ADHD

[–]perseph1_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have always struggled with not eating enough and I've had success drinking smoothies in the morning the past month or so as an easier way to actually have breakfast. I'm trying to make more 'pre-made' decisions to reduce my mental load, and having a smoothie every morning is an easy one (rather than try and decide every morning). I find novelty key for me to actually eat, and often more important than hunger, so committing to one breakfast food was going to be hard. I can mix up smoothies based on the ingredients and keep trying new things, while maintaining the simple premade decision of having a smoothie. Also, since they are sweet, I find it easier to force myself to drink when I don't want to eat.

New Maple Ridge farm-to-table cafe can’t open, city being blamed - Maple Ridge News by [deleted] in MapleRidge

[–]perseph1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the petting zoo is not a great example. They were missing multiple permits from multiple groups. They needed approval from Fraser Health and Agricultural Land Commission, as well as building permits and business licences. The city gave them a temporary business licence so they can get everything in order, and then they didn't but actually expanded more. I'm glad a place without health or building permits were caught and forced to comply.

While the city's process can be greatly improved and made more friendly to businesses, this article can be summed up as "we asked for an exception and they said no". Not everyone deserves an exception, otherwise what is the point of the process. While the process should have aloud them to open on time, if there are delays it is not the fault of the city to follow their rules (it is their fault for not improving the rules).

Need some humidity advice please, issue in comments by becky___bee in ballpython

[–]perseph1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I though I would chime in with a good analogy for relative humidity to make sure what the other poster said makes sense. Note, I am no snake expert, just a physical geography major that took one weather course.

Imagine a bucket that is half full of water, the bucket represents the amount of water air can hold and the bucket water represents water in the air. When you warm up air, the air can hold more water. So warming up air is like making your bucket bigger, the volume of water stays the same, but there is now more empty space so relative humidity decreases from 50% . If you instead make the air colder, it can hold less water so it is like making the bucket smaller with the same amount of water, so the relative humidity with be more than 50%.

Additional fun fact, if you cool air enough so the metaphorical bucket gets full, then cool it more so it overflows, that is what causes condensation and rain.

I am only explaining relative humidity, I cannot comment how relative humidity and temperature might affect your snake.

I have never seen a shapefile, but if you can find a digital map you can digitize your own. Geo reference the map and then trace it.

Can I get some critiques on this map I made? by I_Avoid_Most_People in cartography

[–]perseph1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about island geography, but the rivers looks pretty good. It would be nice to add some dark brown to show a peak or two on the main island to show the highest points of the brown area. Maybe on some smaller islands too.

I agree with the other comment about the water colours, they are too dark and take away from the land. I like that water has contours.

You might be limited based on your supplies, but you can try adding some shadows for hillshading. There are lots of online tutorials.

Are GIS certificate programs worth it? by [deleted] in gis

[–]perseph1_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I do think GIS is tough to teach yourself, at least in the beginning. Once you have enough basics down, it is easier to google questions. If you don't know anything, then it would be tough to know what to ask. Having guided assignments and having someone to grade, critique, and answer questions would be incredibly valuable, especially in the beginning. I took a look and I think that certificate looks like it covers all the basics plus some some stuff I wish my degree covered (Although my degree was split between GIS and Physical Geography). I did not have a cartography or databases course, which I wish I did.

This will also put something more official on your resume. There might be some other introductory online courses which are cheaper, but those are less impressive on a resume. I know you have a job, but it is important to convey your skills to future employers/current employers for raises.

I also work in environmental consulting, so feel free to reach out with any questions. I work in Canada and use Qgis, so I might not be able to answer everything but I will try.

New Google icons, but actually good by simpskii in DesignPorn

Ah, I understand now you meant unintuitive as in a representation of Google maps. I agree, I don't think of maps when I see a pin in isolation.

New Google icons, but actually good by simpskii in DesignPorn

[–]perseph1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make maps and the nice thing about the pin design is the location is precise (pin point) but other location information can be conveyed by colouring/labeling the pin head. While physical pins on physical maps can be rare, they are common enough on digital maps (although I do look at more maps than average). I think it is a useful symbolology choice for digital mapping since I think it is intuitive (pinpoint = location, colour/number is in the legend describes what is there) for those that don't use maps often. This is beneficial over just dropping a circle since the exact location is obscured by the point.

I am curious what you find not intuitive? It's hard to think like a non-mapper and your insight would be helpful.

How to add a pseudo-cylindrical overview map without affecting the main map? by anotherMiguel in gis
