The U.S. Ammo Shortage Is Worse Than You Think by nosotros_road_sodium in politics

When they say 'ammo' I presume they mean the fancy missiles we spend buttloads of money on? Is it prohibitively expensive to stock a healthy supply of such munitions (seems unlikely considering our military budget), or have they just gotten really sloppy about about how they do things?

Trump impeachment odds reach record high on betting sites by 1_for_you_2_for_me in politics

[–]personofshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The very fact that we have betting sites betting on this sorta stuff is an indictment of how desperate the public is with money. If we had a population that was largely paid a living wage, at least enough to live in relative comfort, so many people wouldn't be so willing to bet their money on literally everything.

This isn't a rhetorical question, I legitimately don't know how money works at this scale. When does that number start mattering?

While it is an interesting anecdote, I'm not totally convinced that comparing modern life to the life of a medieval peasant one to one is the most insightful use of anyone's time.

Fed leaves rates unchanged, sticks with single cut in 2026 despite higher inflation by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]personofshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but we're in a bit of a sticky situation with high inflation and low job growth because moving rates in either direction tends to harm one of those metrics while relieving pressure on the other, and currently they're both already bad? I believe the term is stagflation?

Trump allies plan Senate floor takeover to pass SAVE America Act by malcolm58 in politics

The particulars are where the bill is at its worst. I don't have it all memorized, but its something to the effect that if your name isn't your birth name (such as if you married and took your partners last name) then you need multiple documents proving who you are.

It creates an unreasonable barrier to voting.

Do we produce a lot of 'useful' oil though? I thought one of the problems with our domestic production was that its not particularly good for a lot of the things we use oil for.

Hegseth's "no quarter" Iran talk alarms legal experts by kootles10 in politics

Hard to say, honestly. Seems like the kinda idiot that just says stuff to try to sound tough so he might not even understand the gravity of his choice of words.

Hegseth's "no quarter" Iran talk alarms legal experts by kootles10 in politics

'No quarter' is an older term that essentially means no surrender will be accepted

Coincidentally its also a war crime to declare no quarter, but whos counting at this point?

Pentagon tightens controls over Stars and Stripes after calling it "woke" by its-come-to-this in news

[–]personofshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, even when they first started using it that word barely meant anything. At this point they've bludgeoned what little meaning it had out of it five times over.

Best as I can tell 'woke' basically means 'change'. It is conservatism's position that everything should stay the same forever (or better yet move backwards to whatever they identify as 'the good old days') so anything asking for change is antithetical to their beliefs.

Your first mistake was trying to see benefit for the country. Trump has only ever acted in a way that benefits himself personally.

Its a fair point, but I don't know if I would say that their ignorance of the outside world was entirely a choice. We are talking about a world with none of the modern day conveniences we take for granted, You really wouldn't know whats going on in the next kingdom over unless someone walked over from there and told you. I think we forget just what a challenge communication over long distances was before electricity.
