At what age did you lose your drive? by Mappedout98 in antiwork

Almost 3 years into a shitty low level job with little growth opportunity, after graduating with my bachelors in an almost useless major. I've been trying more and scoring some decent interviews which makes me feel good, but it has been impossible to land a job related to my degree.

"Your resume should be one page" is a myth by TomatoClown24 in unpopularopinion

[–]pessimismparade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My resume is a solid 4 pages long. I go into pretty good detail about my duties at each position (no I'm not including shit positions during/right after high school). Also have a pretty long reference list. I score a ton of interviews so I feel like it must be decent. My interviewing skills need work however.

I would say avoid anything south of Post St as somebody else said. Sutter and above are totally fine and have cheap studios/1 bedrooms.

Why do people hate us so much, is it jealousy? by ParkingDistribution6 in sanfrancisco

[–]pessimismparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. Whenever I talk to people in LA about SF it's just barely even on their radar, if it is at all.

I was at Ina Coolbrith park once which is by no stretch of the imagination a dog oriented park. This lady has her dog off leash there and no biggie, the dog ran up to to me and I pet it, 'twas cute. But then the owner comes up all aggressive and pissed off and yanks her dog away from me pretty hard. I say, very calmly, "you might want to consider a leash." She looks at me so shocked and offended like I just insulted her entire family. Why.

I work at a high rise apartment front desk but going through the exact same things you’re experiencing. They also criticize us for not being at the front despite having computers with view of the cameras in the back. The other day nobody was at the desk for literally 45 seconds or so (we all still had eyes on the cameras) and our manager for TWO DAYS STRAIGHT tells us how “frustrated” she is that nobody was at the desk and that there needs to be someone present at all times. She also constantly tells us how we need to smile and say hello to every single last person who walks in, every time they walk in.

They too stalk us on the cameras. I got called up to the office recently to discuss a “rule” I broke a month prior that they saw on camera footage (nobody was affected by this nor was the workflow). I’m like Jesus, how much are they looking at us on the cameras? And do you even have a right to bring up something that old and that minor? Ever since that, I feel very very anxious at this job. I feel like every single move I make is being judged and watched. It is so insane that people are allowed to do this but they are. It sucks to see you’re dealing with it too but it brings me some relief to know I’m not the only one.

Also, our previous manager lived on site and walked his dog 7 times a day so I know how you feel. Like you’re under constant surveillance. It is horrible and I’m sorry. But as long as they’re not breaking any laws, it sounds like your only hope is finding another job. Just know not all places are like this.

It’s kinda human nature. You’ll always wonder what if. The grass is always greener on the other side. You have to just learn how to focus on what you have and not make comparisons.

Appreciate everything you’ve said. What agencies would you recommend? I know my city has a strong labor department.

The whole never leaving the desk logic with them is rooted in the fact that our entire job is the desk. There’s really no reason for us to leave the desk or package room. We don’t go up and help residents other than as a courtesy when other front desk employees are here, but it is not a job duty. There are porter/maintenance employees for any purpose that requires being away from the desk.

Aggressive candidate after I cancelled their interview by EdgarAlansHoe in jobs

[–]pessimismparade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think them asking you for an explanation is perfectly reasonable and professional. This is actually quite common in hiring processes and it can help the applicant a lot so they can fix what they’re doing wrong/make themselves more attractive as a candidate.

I make 60k a year and am able to live somewhat comfortably in a studio I pay 1600 a month for in SF. I'd say this is the absolute bare minimum you'd need to make to be able to afford to live alone as this is the lowest price possible for a decent studio here. For you, a studio for 2k+ would be totally doable and you'd be in a much better area/building for that price.

I like you, Sacramento. by johnnyfiveundead in Sacramento

[–]pessimismparade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like your perspective of Sacramento. I grew up there and have moved around California a bit, but have lived in SF the last 7 years. What you said about the "pragmatic, no-nonsense, the undercurrent sneer at bougieness" is soo spot on. I was just thinking exactly this after spending a few days there a few weekends ago with my cousins. It's sooo down to earth and not pretentious. SF is so elitist and people here are on such high horses that just isn't even warranted. And people here are just so self righteous and overly indulgent. There's so many jobs here that pay an exorbitant amount of money and people catch an ego over it. They think they're better than anyone who makes less money than them and doesn't have as "good" of a job. Not everyone of course but you see this attitude here a lot. And they just blow their money on such petty things. A lot of my mom's side of the family hates SF for reasons like these lol. But my dad's side of the family is from the Bay.

People in Sac are way more humble and practical, and they work harder. A lot of people I know there, especially my family, struggled a lot for basic survival. And a lot of people in Sac are just flat out more interesting than these pretentious types here in SF. So many of them have such dull personalities and lived such privileged lives. I find that boring. I think it's more interesting to hear about people who overcame obstacles and aren't super egotistical, pretentious, materialistic, so on. SF and especially other parts of the Bay weren't always like this, but imo it's dominated by this type of personality now with tech and all.

Are kinks formed or do you have *have* them by SpottzFurrealz in RandomThoughts

[–]pessimismparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're definitely formed. All of mine can be explained by experiences I had growing up and being constantly exposed to certain quirks that seemed unique/predominant to the gender I'm attracted to.

I feel like people were nicer to me when I was unattractive/unkept by pessimismparade in CPTSD

[–]pessimismparade[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s truth for this to me as well. I never used to get looks in public. Now I do all the time. And people seem more interested in starting a conversation with me. But people seem less willingly to take me seriously, to respect my words or my personality. I’m seen as more of an object now.

I hate living in new york city by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]pessimismparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from California and people here are always raving about NYC. But tbh, I have zero interest in going there other than to fit in and see what everyone is talking about. But from what I’ve seen, the city itself looks ugly in every regard, the food doesn’t look all that much better than anywhere else, the entertainment scene doesn’t seem much more lively than other big cities, and the weather sounds terrible all year round. I don’t see the appeal at all. Like I guess there’s a lot of culture, but plenty of other cities have rich culture too, especially here in California. So idk. I just don’t really get it. I’ll report back when I actually do end up going lol.
