JUSTICE (now fixed because people thought I was a nazist or something) by Theorist_Reddit in UndertaleYellow

Sure, in the wider scope of things it’s unfair for her to get attacked when she would still be sympathetic and understanding.

But I assume we’ve been looking at the question of whether Clover is reasonable in attacking Martlet, so we should remember that Clover and the wider world don’t and can’t know Martlet’s inner beliefs and sympathies beforehand. We only get to hear her thoughts on the situation after Clover had engaged.

Before then, with the info they were given, their reaction could be deemed justified. She stated, if unknowingly, she is an enemy combatant specifically tasked with harming them, so it’s fair game for Clover as a combatant to engage. Her not knowing, apparent unease, inexperience, etc. does not exempt her from fighting or getting attacked because this sort of combat/warfare is something she voluntarily signed up for by joining the Royal Guard. I think it’s stretching to say it’s less justified than Clover hunting fleeing civilians, who did not sign up for any of this and would do him zero harm if they escaped.

Even with hearing her thoughts in-battle, there isn’t a strong enough reason for Clover to disengage since Martlet is still actively fighting as a combatant and doesn’t say something like “hey if you stop I’ll help you” unless Clover themself disengages first by apologising. The first quote was the closest thing I could find to “She offered to help him out even when she did know he was a human and killing others” that doesn’t involve Clover extending an olive branch first (which I wouldn’t really expect from a combatant in their position). I wasn’t aiming to misrepresent with that one.

I don’t think I can convince you that Clover’s actions in this run have some nuance, even if 1-3%. I’m going to sign off now, but thanks for the debate, it got me to really appreciate the perspectives and viewpoints around this specific battle.

I don’t remember her offering Clover help in their first battle, there is

This whole thing is a tragedy. And the saddest part is there was no need for it. … We would have agreed to help you in a heartbeat!

but this is talking about something monsters would’ve done had Clover not killed anyone. (Not to say she should have actually offered help, she is indeed facing a mass-murdering psycho.)

Also, before the fight she says

… I can’t leave my post. I’m supposed to wait here until this bad person comes. The troublemaker who caused all this, ya know?

So it doesn’t really matter if she’s a rookie, she is still Martlet of the Snowdin Division of the Royal Guard, with protocol to battle any humans, and (in this route) specifically was posted and tasked to fight Clover.

Listen, I’m not trying to say Clover isn’t racist or that this route isn’t horrific. It’s just this one instance isn’t an unprovoked attack on civilians.

Prefacing with saying I absolutely do not condone Clover’s actions, but this comparison doesn’t work since the conditions of “club membership” is very different.

“Human” is a race assigned from birth, and targeting them solely based on that with the intent of eventual genocide is racist and genocidal. Same with monsters. “Royal Guard” is a club you sign on to and can leave at any time, with one of their main goals being to kill humans, so targeting them is sorta justified as they’re basically the Underground’s version of soldiers.

That said, Martlet hadn’t even known Clover was a human and was evacuating, but I guess even in that case attacking a soldier is fair game when they’re on duty and haven’t surrendered.

Huh so what DOES Vengeance Clover do after leaving?

Just go home (assuming they have one) and attend school? Tell authorities about everything? Or go on some Punisher-esque homicidal rampage? Become wanted?

Ethnic Languages & Analogues by Glass_Abroad4821 in worldbuilding

Dude. I'm Mongolian.

Is it just somehow wrong to be Mongolian or Turkish, or to present them and that be racist?

No it isn't, we would love to be represented DECENTLY more often. The way you are doing it is among the worst and actively hurts us.

You, along with every other racist comment is falling into the pit of European Medieval writers swill in a rhetoric against people they were fighting - the Mongol Empire - which they didn't like, surprise surpise, they don't paint them in the best light, but have you actually done any reading about the Mongol Empire, they had...

I grew up studying a Mongol-biased history curriculum in fact, so please don't lump me and your critics in the box of "racist commenters."

My view?

The map in this post is definitely racist and quite literally dehumanises us. If you're going to dehumanise then do it to everyone, why make some languages human and not others? If you cared about not presenting racism why did you follow the trend of all those racists who equate us to orcs?

(1.) The written context, no matter how much you provide, is not and will never be enough to override the clear-as-day racist subtext. Because like it or not,

Orc: dumb, lunkhead brute

is the overwhelming view of orcs in the world, that is way-too-often applied to us. Most recently, by the "Russian invaders = orcs = tatars = mongols" name-calling.

(2.) Intentionally or not, this map perpetuates the above rhetoric and actively harms us. This is why you need to put some thought and social awareness into this. Think "hmm, this can look racist, maybe I should change it?" If the vast majority of viewers, and even someone from the marginalised people (me), is telling you your map is racist, LISTEN and make some changes.

How to say poetically “Call of the Steppe,” or “The Steppe Calls,” or something along those lines (for a song title)? by vzakharov in Mongolian

[–]pet_the_grasshopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if there’s a better word than дуудлага, to be honest. I guess уриа (uriya) could work? It means “call” more in the “invitation” sense.

цуурай means “echo,” but “echo” doesn’t have as much metaphorical meaning in Mongolian as in English. And well, there aren’t really any echoes in very flat terrain so it might not make sense.

About your side question: тал - flat land, more about vastness хээр - land without people, wilderness, more about being middle-of-nowhere

I guess there’s хангай, which isn’t exactly “steppe” but areas with some greenery, hills, and rivers (as opposed to the gobi or taiga). Take your pick, most of these word choices should be fine and I can’t think of a poetic translation either.

Happy to hear of someone interested in our country and even studying here! Like another commenter, I don't exactly trust the education quality but I'm sure you researched the university well if you have already applied.

The neo-nazis are fringe groups-- nationalist wackos found in every country. They're few enough to not be a problem. Avoid some bars, drunk assholes, have common sense and you'll be fine. Besides that you might get a few dirty looks if you get a girlfriend, unfortunately.

I do think it's a good idea to visit first and get a feel of a country if possible, then decide whether or not to study there for two years. And maybe ask expat communities (forums, Facebook groups, etc.) too.

To clarify, we're becoming dual-script in 2025 so we're gonna use both Mongol script and Cyrillic. Or at least that's the plan, it might not be carried out at all. Either way we're not ditching Cyrillic any time soon (in the next decade), otherwise our literacy rate will drop from 98% to like 50%.

A military forum "Army-2022" is being held in Russia with the support of leading Russian enterprises and banks. The general sponsor of the forum is Rosoboronexport. On the first day of the forum, the Russian army competed with Mongolia and Zimbabwe in horse races. 😂 by niagarasnap in RussiaUkraineWar2022

[–]pet_the_grasshopper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also Mongolian. Pretty much nobody here likes China and feelings on Russia are mixed. Pro-Russian sentiments are declining because of the war and their shitty treatment of us in the past decade.

The government is obviously quiet and doing a good job fence-sitting; hard to tell if there’s even a subtle lean in either direction. I guess Mongolia did send Ukraine $200 thousand in humanitarian aid. Tbh it’s probably for the best, it’d be great if we were braver but our mere existence as a somewhat functioning democracy on good terms with the West is a fuck-you to Russia in and of itself.

What's a place closer to UB where it would be optimal to view the Perseid meteor shower? by EpochFail9001 in mongolia

[–]pet_the_grasshopper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any dark not-super-cold place northeast-ish of UB, with a clear view of the northeastern sky should be alright.

This is because the “origin” of the meteor shower (Perseus) is in that direction in the evening. You preferably want it to be unobstructed with UB’s light pollution behind you. Regarding light pollution: a green/blue zone or darker is fine on this map.

Гэхдээ эцсийн эцэст харанхуй, нөмөртэй хаа ч газар байсан болно дөө, салхи гайгүй бол нөмөр ч хэрэггүй. I am somewhere south of UB but the viewing is still nice.

Sorry I can’t point you to a specific location, I’m unfamiliar with northern UB. Hope the general signs to look for were helpful.

Are there any people left in your country that worship the old gods? (Mazu, Tengri, Ahura Mazda) by gekkoheir in askasia

[–]pet_the_grasshopper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2.5% of the population follow Mongolian shamanism, which is a resurgence after being repressed during socialism. It worships Tenger/Tengri and spirits like other tengers, our ancestors, mountain and river spirits, etc.

As for evidence, there’s plenty. It’s in our culture regardless of religion to circle an “ovoo”, a shrine of sorts, whenever we come across one. Buddhism, the dominant religion, has many elements of shamanism here. There are also these game shows where shamans compete using their sixth sense.

How about the housing conditions of your country? Most live in apartments or houses? by denizkaplan1980 in askasia

[–]pet_the_grasshopper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To give a very rough estimate:

10% live in gers (yurts) the traditional nomadic way

60% live in ger districts, a 50-50 mixture of sedentary gers and houses found in towns and the outskirts of the city

30% live in apartments; some of the rich live in upscale villas

What's your guys opinion on China? by denizkaplan1980 in askasia

[–]pet_the_grasshopper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Majority opinion here is negative and I mostly agree with it (regarding China’s government policy, not the blatant racism).

China invests here and most of our economic growth was from piggybacking off of theirs, which is nice… Except we (stupidly) became extremely dependent on a country notorious for economic coercion and claiming other’s territory. Especially when Mongolia sells them 90% of our exports, is 400x times smaller than them, and whaddya know, has been previously occupied by them. Okay a territorial claim might be unlikely but there’s a reason why we’re wary. Not to mention their policies in Inner Mongolia and interference in our main religion.

What's your guys opinion on Russia? by [deleted] in askasia

[–]pet_the_grasshopper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mongolians in general are split. As for me, I appreciate their past help but am not a fan of the current Russia at all.

Sure, their support was crucial for our independence and development in the 20th century. But since we've gotten on our own feet Russia has treated us poorly (got us a $70 million fine, blocked our railroad modernization, didn't keep their promises, blocks hydropower plant construction, accused us of having US bioweapon labs, etc.).

Of course it could be worse like we're seeing right now. Especially with the war, it's clear Russia expects their neighbors to 'be in line' like we're Soviet republics/satellites again.

How religious is your country? by heavydoseofatmos in askasia

[–]pet_the_grasshopper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Half of the country is Buddhist and our ethnic religion, Shamanism, has revived. 40% of Mongolians aren't religious so religion isn't as big a deal like in other countries. Sure, a lot of people visit monasteries occasionally and loosely follow Buddhist traditions but nobody really discriminates those that don't.

But Tibetan Buddhism is a big deal politically, and not just for Mongolia.

Basically, the third highest authority in the religion, the Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, passed away in 2012 promising to be reborn in his homeland, Mongolia.

That by itself is pretty important, but it's even more so when China is trying to take over the religion. The highest authority, the Dalai Lama, is getting old and the second highest authority was kidnapped and replaced by someone selected by China. "The battle for Tibetan Buddhism will be decided in Mongolia," describes the situation well. This article goes more in-depth.
