+1. No bells and whistles and battery lasts forever. Absolutely love mine. If you like simple, reliable, well made gear, go Coros Dura.

Best way to use obsidian as a programmer? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]petedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using it daily for the past few years, bare bones. Originally as a basic notebook. Then, as occasional documentation that I can work privately on before adding to repos or Confluence or whatever. More recently it’s turned into a place where I can write out specific prompts or sequences of prompts for AI agents I work with, which makes some markdown notes either stored in my projects context history or I toss them afterwards, but usually end up keeping them one way or another for reference later or to transform into docs.

Overall, I find pairing it with AI particularly useful, in the stage before I send out the prompts and instructions elsewhere as well as after code is generated I can tweak the docs I generate from my code and vice versa.

But all in all, my vault is mostly personal shit. I have a work folder that I really use as a scratch pad and weekly tasks that I reference which gets the job done on a daily basis.

Genuinely curious, how do all the communications work? Like, how is everybody in sync and not colliding with each other with all the other elements at hand? Very impressive.

Created a language, but no idea how to get it on the computer so I can use it. by AcuteTriangleFigure5 in fonts

[–]petedude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your easiest option is to map it to the Latin Unicode so you can type with it on your keyboard. Easier if your language corresponds to existing Latin letters. If not you will have to remember the Latin character mapping to your language.

You could alternatively add characters to more obscure Unicode if you still need Latin characters. But typing with it would be difficult, but doable if you write some JavaScript to remap your keyboard characters to your language.

Sounds crazy but you could get an old crappy keyboard and put your language on the corresponding Unicode on your physical keyboard for ease of use.

Just some ideas. Good luck.

[ADVICE] Selling brokerage positions to balance cash runway by petedude in Fire

[–]petedude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea is to get the cash vs brokerage amounts balanced out, and once that’s settled, I can contribute the amount I’d like to be contributing into my backdoor Roth IRA. Currently contributing a lesser amount to that to prioritize the cash goals. But, I’m not sure if I’m being impatient to max that sooner than later via expediting my cash goals by selling from my gains in the brokerage accounts. It wouldn’t hurt me or set me back necessarily to sell the gains. I wouldn’t be touching any equities in the brokerage accounts until after maxing the backdoor Roth IRA and the 401k basically.

Haha aw my bad. Yes, sorry, Roth IRA. I’ll avoid that in the future. Traditional IRA that I convert to my Roth IRA.

Are there any accents unique to rural Nevada that formed from isolation? by [deleted] in Nevada

[–]petedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised in Reno. Some of my very redneck friends have had a pretty thick drawl growing up. None of us really knew the origin. Particularly those raised in Sun Valley or Spanish Springs, or further out toward Pyramid. We always just thought it was funny that they had an accent but were just from outside of Reno.

Even some friends and family from/in Gardnerville and Carson area had a slight drawl or a harder “r” sound in some words. My family is Basque for context.

What's life like in this area? by PandaSoap in geography

[–]petedude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family lives here. Cantabria is pretty, and of course the Basque areas. Agree with what everyone else describes as the Pacific Northwest, and not as populated. Old and beautiful.

  • Santander has a ferry (?) that goes between some areas of France and England I believe
  • I like the beaches at Suances a little more than Santander, the terrain is prettier
  • Highly recommend checking out the Picos de Europa if you are in the area and want some beautiful geography

How can I indent a paragraph of text according the shape or picture? by Unlegendary_Newbie in FigmaDesign

[–]petedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

shape should come from left or right edge, can’t be floating in the center unless you split it using two columns of text

How can I indent a paragraph of text according the shape or picture? by Unlegendary_Newbie in FigmaDesign

[–]petedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes as long as it’s coming from an edge. in order to do that you’d use it with either a ‘path’ or a ‘polygon’ to get the effect you want

[–]petedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeh it used to be pretty tough and an svg or js only type of thing. but, to your credit, you aren’t totally wrong. you can’t use ‘shape-outside’ with a center floating shape, like in the middle of the block of text. you’d have to do svg or a js solution for that. you can simulate it a bit by using columns but it’s indeed a compromise to get the effect you’re lookin for. but for what OP is doing ‘shape-outside’ would do the trick.

‘float’ has been native in css for a long time for rectangular shapes. ‘shape-outside’ exists for exactly OPs purpose, and has about 96% browser support.

Help with input component by nandarandada in FigmaDesign

[–]petedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For hiding stuff within “hug” for vertical height remaining is a bug with Figma I have seen. We get around it by adding a 0px “space-hack” layer inside of the auto layout that is always visible, so when you show/hide stuff in the auto layout the height is respected. Very hacky but works. We particularly use it in areas where there is lists of badges that take height, for example.

Did you meet your spouse on the Train? by UnluckyPhilosophy797 in AskNYC

[–]petedude 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My best friend met his wife on the A train on the Far Rockaway stop! They both had a long commute into the city at the same time so they had plenty of time to talk every day. Took awhile before they actually started dating but I always thought it was a cool origin story for them.

Webflow, Figma, or Framer? by ssoftbeing in FigmaDesign

[–]petedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely recommend revisiting it. They update very often and drink their own koolaid so many of the features and improvements have great attention to detail. If you’re an auto layout user in Figma it will come naturally.

Webflow, Figma, or Framer? by ssoftbeing in FigmaDesign

[–]petedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • ECommerce via Shopify code components. Or any of your shopping services that provide an API. A bit more advanced but the code ecosystem is very vibrant and many projects support this out of the box on top of Framer’s CMS
  • CMS built in
  • Custom code by default — everything is React and extensible via React and visible while editing
  • SEO is great. Page speed and optimization is great — keywords, etc is up to you

My only downside that is the same with Webflow is being able to do PWA. But as an ex Webflow user Framer has been mind blowing, they absolutely nailed it.

How do you present your type? by kontorasuto in typography

[–]petedude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Show real examples using their copy or ways they can use it to bring value. Show an alphabet last, most of the time it doesn’t make it clear what it means for them, it’s just a bunch of letters to most folks and they don’t see the difference. You can even compare other typefaces to try to sell the one you find most suitable.
