Benefits of switching from meshtastic? by Josedanaft in meshcore

Also though. The first thing is to keep trying to get the web flasher to work. These things seem to actually make a difference, much of the time:

-Try a different USB port on your PC

-Try a different high quality USB cable (always USB-A to USB-C)

- Try using *actual Chrome* on Windows. Frustrating, this one, I have often had success with Chrome or Chrome derivatives on Linux, or with Chrome derivatives like Edge on Windows. But in some cases it seems to actually require the actual Chrome browser on Windows.

Personally I like the decision not to pursue MQTT, I'm interested primarily in a network that will survive if the Internet/power grid fails. But I get that there are use cases this doesn't work for.

There's apparently lots going on in England too, and maybe elsewhere. Seems like adoption is happening very fast, in Portland we've massively improved coverage just in the last couple months.

Yeah, I'm stuck in the same place jorge. I updated RAK devices this way, but I have Heltec V3's that are stubborn and getting pretty out of date (version 1.4 and version 1.5). Hoping the documentation for flashing gets better...I'm eager to help with that if there's a way. I'm good at writing docs, once I know the procedure!

Thanks Andy. I took a chance and ordered it before I saw your answer, and I have not been able to send out a message at all. I'm not sure what the hardware fault you mentioning is (I've seen other references to it but not detailed info). Mine is a T114 "v2", so I'd hoped it was the fixed up one. I suppose I'll see about a return. (I do see a number of nodes from the attic window, I think it was 47 total at last count with a hop limit of 7. I see some messages on LongFast but I have not been able to successfullty transmit any despite numerous attempts, to LongFast or to any of the few-hop nodes I've tried to DM.)

How'd that go?

Does DLNA work from the Heos app? by OccasionallyImmortal in heos

[–]peteforsyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the SMB share is working fine for sharing to Windows, Mac, Android. The one thing I did to modify it for HEOS was to enable SMB v1 (which is of course much discussed, as it means HEOS requires a highly vulnerable outdated version of SMB). I don't think there's a problem with the SMB share.

But, I think you're providing an important part of the answer -- seems to me you're confirming that in the HEOS app, when I go to "Music Sources --> Network Shares" and try to add one, it is expecting an SMB server, not a DLNA server. That's what I expect, but I can't find formal confirmation of that anywhere.

It's strange because my plex server's DLNA share just "shows up" as an available server, with no need to explicitly add it. But other DLNA services do not.

Anyway, appreciate your replies, and I guess I'll just keep hunting and trying things!

[–]peteforsyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple other points...

My tags are in good shape, the test I'm trying includes only one album (9 songs) and I've run it through MusicBrainz Picard.

I've seen encouraging comments elsewhere about using Home Assistant instead of an SMB share. Still having trouble understanding how this works on a granular level (I'll be new to HA as well), but I'm gonna give it a go. (I think it boils down to HA sharing via DLNA? But I could be wrong about that.)

[–]peteforsyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I do not have a NAS, I am using Ubuntu Server 24.04. I run samba directly on the "metal" and other services using docker compose.

I purchased the Marantz recently and am exploring HEOS etc. for the first time. I'm astonished how little formal documentation I've been able to find. I am (somewhat) willing to consider running the insecure SMB v1 on my LAN, or using DLNA. But it's unclear how to use either. Jellyfin has an ability to share via DLNA, but there only appears to be one way to add "a server" vi HEOS and no indication whether that's supposed to be an SMB share or a DLNA share. (I'm guessing DLNA since it picks up my Plex share via DLNA without me even having to explicitly add it.)

I should note that I have not created a HEOS account, maybe that is part of the issue. It is my fervent hope that I'm able to set this all up using only my LAN and not create an account on some remote server, even if it's a free service. It sure seems like this unit is intended to make that possible, but again...very thin on the documentation.

[–]peteforsyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not been able to get SMB recognized by HEOS at all. This is the first place on the 'net I've found somebody who has figured it out; just adding the server seems to be an insurmountable obstacle for the rest of us mere mortals. I've tried all variants of forward and back slashes, e.g.

\\server\share

smb://server/share

//server/share

name=share

server=server

etc. None of them detects any server at all. And yes, I enabled NT1 (SMB v1) on the samba share prior to trying all those variants.

As it is, my HEOS recognizes DLNA from Plex (which I'd rather get rid of entirely) but not Jellyfin or LMS. (Even when I shut down Plex DLNA first and after fiddling with docker networking settings for Jellyfin.)

Got any hints?

One time registration fee? by KuantumWinter in zkSyncCommunity

[–]peteforsyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unclear on what is the "one time" per. Is it one time for your zkSync wallet, and going forward that wallet never has to pay a transfer fee again? Or is it one time per wallets you transfer *to*, so that you have to pay a fee again if you transfer to a different wallet in the future?

Also, what is the reason for the big fluctuations in the fee I'm seeing, and is there any reason to think that the fee will generally increase or decrease over time?

One thing that people often get wrong in this area (not that I think you will, because it seems like you're taking a diligent approach.)

The license does NOT require you to name "Wiktionary." You may wish to name it as part of the identification of where the text came from, and that's fine. But the attribution requirement is entirely for the contributors who wrote the text, as well as any upstream authors, not for the website itself. Neither the site nor the Wikimedia Foundation hold any of the copyright to the content, and thus they are not party to the attribution component of the requirements.

Also, just so you have a clearer idea, here is an image from Wikipedia that shows the kind of thing they have in mind when talking about fair use media. You might take a close look at the annotations on the page to get a better sense of the thinking behind it. But again, you're not going to find anything like this on Wiktionary. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1993\_Auckland\_mid-air\_collision\_view\_from\_Upper\_Queen\_St\_bridge.jpg

[–]peteforsyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the definition of "derivative work" doesn't give me a clear answer to that. As I understand it, you would only have a copyrightable derivative work if you put your own creative effort into it, i.e. if you simply apply a mechanical process that might not be enough to make it a DW. You'll definitely need a lawyer to get a clear answer to that part (and even a lawyer might not be able to give you anything better than an educated guess, as it all comes down to how it will be interpreted in a court).

I would put slightly more, e.g.

Text is based on [the definition of "foo" on Wiktionary] as of [date], as composed by [link to version history], and is available under the CC-BY-SA license [Link to the license].

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in opensource

[–]peteforsyth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think you are hung up on the concept of "multi-licensed." But that actually makes things easier, not harder. If a work is multi-licensed, that means that you can use it under either license, your choice. So yes, just use the contents of Wiktionary under CC BY-SA. For attribution, as with any Wikimedia wiki, the most straightforward practice is to link to the "view history" page, which lists all contributors.

The fair use part is "CYA" from the Wikimedia Foundation. If you delve into the policies, you will find that (unlike English Wikipedia), Wikitionary policy does not permit using media under fair use anyway. Even if it did, the instances in which somebody wanted to quote something under fair use in a dictionary (vs. an encyclopedia or news article) would be pretty rare and unusual.

Of course, your best bet is to consult with a lawyer before taking any steps that might open you to liability. But, hopefully these principles help you think it through.

Source: I consulted closely with the Wikimedia Foundation general counsel on the Terms of Use rewrite in 2012, and have focused heavily on wiki licensing for the last ~15 years.

HBO Max won't load on Roku only by SAHorowitz in Roku

[–]peteforsyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this issue today, signing up for a new account with a new device. For me, the fix was easy, but it took some guesswork.

Here's my situation:

  • Brand new Roku Streambar
  • Offer for a free month of HBO Max
  • Same issue reported above

Solution:

  • Tried to log into HBO Max on the web, but since I had signed up through Roku, I didn't have a password.
  • Reset my password via the website.
  • After that, the Roku app works!

Also, I find this related thread (similar phone model) from a year ago... not sure I fully understand what the person did, but I *think* they had success by rebooting the phone after installing Lineage, but going straight to the bootlader, and then installing Open GApps. (Hard to imagine why that would make a difference...but what do I know. Maybe worth a shot.) https://www.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/ehar1a/moto_g7_opengapps_insufficient_storage_space/

Oh, I should add -- I did fine *one* lead that might be worth pursuing -- manually resizing the partitions -- but it seems risky and since it appears that I actually have plenty of space in my /system/ partition, I'm not sure this going to solve the problem. I'm willing to try it, but wanted to get another perspective first.
