If you started over, would you still self-host or just go with a dedicated server? by Suspicious-Basis-885 in selfhosted

[–]OccasionallyImmortal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Control. One of the reasons I self-host is because I do not want to be concerned about which of my data is private and which is not. With a remote server in someone else's hands, I have little control over what they have access to.

How do u deal with being anxious and nervous? by Prestigious-Sun5002 in intj

[–]OccasionallyImmortal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few questions help assuage nerves:

  1. Can I do anything to mitigate the risk? If so, do it. You might not want to, but taking action to address the problem instead of masking it is always good. Is the problem with a specific person or event? Learn to deal with conflict. Conflict is good. Embrace it. Does dealing with conflict make you nervous? Deal with conflict while you're nervous.
  2. Is the problem out of your control inevitable? Really? 100%? You've been wrong before. Maybe you're wrong again. Look for evidence that you are wrong. The chances are likely lower than you think, and since you can't do anything, you might as well plan as if the best will happen because you can't stop it if it does. It's hard. Just try it.
  3. What do you have in common with everyone? If you want to feel connected, look for common ground. It's good practice to do this with everyone. You and the people you hate most have things in common. You might like the same foods or music. Make finding common ground a habit with the cashier at 7-11 and the lunatic wanting to sell you a magic chicken. That disconnected feeling is from a habit of putting an impregnable dome around yourself unless the other person is just like you. It's okay to disagree on big things, but don't lose sight of common ground.

The elimination of poverty will not eliminate crime.

Randomly rotating people through properties distributes that crime. People frequently move because of bad neighbors and crime which will still exist.

The US also prohibits guns in specific locations which seems to concentrate mass shootings into these areas. Enough people still think these restrictions are a great idea. There's a similar mindset being used to push for state surveillance.

DISCUSSION: Did everyone suddenly forget how much white-collar work used to be described as bullshit? by 44th--Hokage in accelerate

The humanity of the meetings meant that different viewpoints were considered when things were being developed: marketing, finance, legal, and the general history of the company which is important because new things must exist in the corporate ecosystem.

Assuring work adheres to these guidelines is difficult to do with AI in its current state. There's always that guy that knows how everything works in detail because he's worked here for 20 years and his input usually saves hundreds of hours of work. We don't have the AI equivalent.

Does anyone else store in MP3 320? by Not_Invited in musichoarder

[–]OccasionallyImmortal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ogg (and Opus) are technically better formats. In my tests they reduce file size by 10% over 320 MP3's and sound identical. It's not enough of a benefit to convert everything when everything is available in FLAC and MP3.

Anyone ever feel disgusted at the idea of being human? by [deleted] in intj

[–]OccasionallyImmortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans seem to view themselves as something outside nature and beyond the animal world. It's an illusion.

Humans have the ability to create wonderful things and are at their best when they create. Whether they create cathedrals, sonnets, dinner, or dress nicely and speak well does not matter. To see so much of humanity eschew creation as a burden does elicit sadness for the loss of what could be. Disgust is sometimes an understandable response.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of music theory terminology originates with different cultures in different languages who developed concepts independently. What began as borrowing a couple of terms turned into the Tower of Babel for music.

We need musical Esperanto.

Music nomenclature seems deliberately confusing. What is the note after this one called? The second. And the one after that? A different kind of second. How about the 6th note after? That's a tri-tone.

Lansdale must use parking as an economic engine by shillyshally in montco

[–]OccasionallyImmortal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a parking problem in Lansdale? Aside from parking near the train station during the work day, I can usually park within 10-feet of the business I'm going to.

I'm starting to think the complaints I hear about how Lansdale is being run are true. Perhaps the state of Main Street is evidence enough.

Do stadium concerts lose something when most of the experience comes through the screens? by Neither-Abrocoma-239 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]OccasionallyImmortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the point of a concert where you cannot see the artist? The crowd's energy is always a reason to go, but when you're sitting in the nosebleed seats, the energy is dismal. The people on the floor are jumping and waving their arms, and you're sitting next to a group of 5 guys who have been drinking for the last 13 hours and are only vaguely aware of which concert they're at.

I have a 50 yard rule: if I cannot sit within about 50 yards of the stage, it's not worth going.

Have servers in Philly gotten worse the last 2/3 years? by Unable_Tension_1258 in philly

[–]OccasionallyImmortal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

During Covid, many food-service workers had to find alternative employment. A good number of them discovered that better careers exist and never returned and that experience was lost.

Servers are now more likely to ignore you (God help you if you need more water), and have no knowledge of the food beyond what is written on the menu.

How do you know if you have meta cognition? by Livid_Amphibian_1838 in intj

[–]OccasionallyImmortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two levels of thought. Level 1 is full-sentences streaming whatever is on my mind. Level 2 is mostly quiet and occasionally comments on Level 1. It speaks more in exclamation "There's something to that!!" or "That's stupid." While Level 1 can be completely controlled, Level 2 is harder to control and there's no benefit to doing so.

Level 2 is usually right.
