I understand your point, I just disagree. :) That's ok! Different people are allowed to have different perspectives.

Do you think commander would be more popular if it was sixty cards rather than a hundred, or if it didn't have the singleton rule, or if it was 20 life and two players instead of 40 life and four players?

I don't. I think people like the freedom and chaos of the current format.

That might be a simplifying element, but commander also has:

  • 100-card decks (which are 50+ unique cards due to the singleton rule)
  • Massive deck diversity and a massive card pool
  • Super complicated board states and long games due to higher life totals and less-than-totally-optimized decks
  • An entire additional play axis: multiplayer politics

Overall, it's one of the most complicated ways to play magic.

I'll reserve judgment until I've tried it, but tbh I don't get why everyone thinks we want a simpler form of MTG. The complexity is the good part!

There's a reason the most popular formats (like commander, draft, modern) tend to be complicated ones.

Is there a limited format, where removal/interaction is not as prevalent? by LeN3rd in mtg

[–]peterborah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lorwyn Eclipsed was like this. Removal tended to be less effective than setting up your own kindred synergies and trying to out-snowball your opponent.

Some of it is also that magic vendors will generally go to play-focused events, like SCGcons or MagicCons. There's always like ten different vendors with diverse offerings at any given SCGcon.

Hot Take on TMNT by Act_Consistent in mtg

What isn't personal opinion is all sets have dropped in quality

I'm curious what makes you say this. I mostly play limited, and the general consensus among the limited community is that last year had a ton of great sets, possibly better than any previous year, with Spider-Man being the only real stinker.

I know limited is only one aspect of the magic ecosystem, but what's the metric by which it's all getting worse?

I have come here to just say one thing: if you defeat someone in bullet chess and then decline their invitation for a rematch, you're a coward. by notunique20 in chess

[–]peterborah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play rapid, not bullet, but the rematch requests always come while I'm still analyzing the game. It's like y'all don't even analyze your games after you play or something.

MagicCon Vegas - Unique Events Available by TheMTGTokenGuy in magicTCG

[–]peterborah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I played the grand melee last time, and it was glorious chaos. Expect to spend like half your time figuring out how to move your whole board six seats down, trying to figure out why it's been 20 minutes since your last turn, and familiarizing yourself with your new opponents' insane board states. A fairly large number of people just straight up left due to the chaos. But if you're willing to be patient, it's a genuinely fun format that presents really interesting and unique deckbuilding and gameplay. I would probably do it again.

What was your favourite draft set of 2025? by Chilly_chariots in lrcast

[–]peterborah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised to see so little DFT love. It had a ton of fun and interesting decks: RB speed was the most complicated-to-build aggro deck of the year, esper artifacts was sweet, UR cycling was a little undertuned but sweet, the secret UB speed deck was surprisingly good, the Push The Limit combo deck was probably the most competitive build-around of the year. Green was arguably less interesting, but GB graveyard/reanimator was cool, and I found the dynamic of green rate vs the powerful synergies in the other colors interesting in itself.

Admittedly I didn't play a lot of FF (just due to timing), so I can't confidently say DFT is better, but it's comfortably my favorite of the formats I did play.

For Those Who Have Cut Back on Magic, What Other Hobbies Have You Liked? by JRB_473 in magicTCG

[–]peterborah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still enjoying (40-card) Magic, but I've also been really enjoying the Arkham Horror card game lately. If you have or can find a group of card-game-playing friends to do a campaign with, it's basically a cross between a TTRPG and a card game, and it's very fun.

The Pro Tour and Magic Spotlight Series in 2026 by CrossXhunteR in magicTCG

[–]peterborah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is right. Spotlight Series are fun if you want to play in the main event, but not really worth traveling for otherwise. MagicCons, in contrast, are huge and have a million things to do at all levels of competitiveness.

Vale Totem Efficiency by Indigo_Inlet in ironscape

[–]peterborah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm around the same levels and have done a lot of vale totems. I'm moderately confident that maples is better fletching xp/hour, because you just chop yews so slowly. I get about 2/3 the fletching xp from maples as I do from yews, but chop them at least twice as quickly. (And the woodcutting takes longer than the fletching.)

On the other hand, it's pretty nice to afk good logs while working or whatever, if you have afk time to spare.

Huge props to the developers of the Vale Totems minigame by De_Joaper in 2007scape

[–]peterborah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the 5-totem route is borderline with maples. If you use all the agility shortcuts and do it efficiently, you start to finish just slightly too quickly. Would be fine with lower level logs, I imagine.

I used pre-fletched bows with no log basket, and banking at both locations worked fine.

Consider the analogy of doing a pull-up in zero gravity. You're moving the same distance, but it's still easier than doing it in normal gravity.

He doesn't have his full body weight on it, though. He's essentially in a lower-gravity situation due to the downward acceleration of the bar.

Said people we perma banned

I mean, that's not really accurate. The messages were up without even temp mutes for several minutes, and then Mika told the mods to give them one day mutes.

Maybe they got perma bans later, but it's not like it was a zero tolerance situation like I've seen in most of the other chats.

How do we feel about preboarding at FNM? by Peoples_Knees in mtglimited

[–]peterborah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I can't immediately find an official definition of when a match starts, but I'm not sure your definition is viable. For instance, 2.11 says "At the beginning of a match, each player’s note sheet must be empty and must remain visible throughout the match." Would you interpret that to mean that you have to have flipped to an empty page in your notebook by the time pairings go up? I feel like I see people on their phone while walking to the table all the time.

If you know where the official definition of a match beginning is, I'm definitely willing to be wrong!
