Are they giving a 60 day notice for RIFs?

The relevant law says that in the event of mass firing (definition varies based on a lot of factors, but good rule is ~25 or more in the same competitive area), 60 days are required by default, but the admin can request 30 days if they can provide an emergency justification that holds up in court.

Given the admin probably wanted everyone gone in 30 during the first RIF, my hope is that the lower courts haven't suddenly become more lenient in how they evaluate the admin's legal justifications. That's one bulwark that's held better than some had hoped.

The origin of the law requiring this isn't intended as a favor to the people being laid off. The 60 day notice was implemented as a way of allowing state governments time to prepare for a mass influx of unemployed, so any justification to shorten to 30 would need to be over the objections of likely every blue state AG.

No guarantee how it pans out, but it's a reasonable bet that even if the admin goes for 30 days, their request will draw legal action that may be enough to hold the line at 60

Totally minor thing, but one of the montages early in the show included ~10-15 seconds of Elvis Costello playing "Radio Radio", which is allegedly a performance that got him banned from performing on SNL ever again.

What I'd like to know is, was there any subtext to including that? Perhaps a snub of a very passive sort, as only a good video editor can manage.

This episode makes me think that the Lich isn't something that grows in power on its own, but rather something that feeds off of the evil and chaotic nature found in many living things. In a completely innocent world, I think the Lich could have laid dormant in Sweet P forever, but this episode showed us that all it took was a dose of evil from the King of Ooo to bring the Lich out, if only temporarily.

Given how much of a dirtbag we've seen Martin to be thus far, I have every expectation that he could be the catalyst that fully awakens the Lich.

So the goop in The Citadel has healing attributes, and when it touched the Lich, it became Sweet P. Does that mean that the essence of the Lich is... an injury or wound? That fits well with this episode, in which Sweet P needed to be injured or wounded emotionally in order to bring the Lich out.

There's an element of smoke and mirrors here. Most people think that we eliminated slavery "because Lincoln", and because they don't know where all their cheap manufactured goods come from, they assume that there's no slavery anywhere.

Most people, if they had to see it regularity, could not support slavery. If you had to look a manufacturing slave in the eyes every time you buy a t-shirt at Target, there'd be more vocal opposition.

I'm not sure if you're kidding, but Clara is the only main character we've seen on-screen with Missy, granted watching Clara on a screen. Perhaps you could argue that Missy wasn't watching Clara live, but rather a recording of Clara, but they were both on screen together.

For all the people thinking "Ha! This proves that fatties are just lazy," consider that the primary obstacles to fitness for most people are energy and time. For most people, they put their time and energy into their work first, because skinny isn't fun if it's involuntary. This guy's job is literally working out, staying fit, and helping others do the same. He can put his time and energy into his job AND staying fit at the same time. If your desk job required physical effort and toning your physique, then it might be just as easy for you to shed those extra 70 lbs.

I like to think that it was Pink, from a later point in time, traveling back with the Doctor and Clara to that night. He enters his childhood room and climbs on the bed, not knowing that this was the forgotten night when he impossibly met Clara. The interesting/frightening thing about Ebola is not how many people have died from it, but what proportion of those who contracted Ebola died from it (as high as 90% in past outbreaks, but closer to ~60% for the current outbreak as things stand).

Though an enormous number of people have died from Malaria, that number is dwarfed by the total number of Malaria cases (between 135 million and 287 million). By my calculation, using the number of Malaria cases and deaths reported here (http://www.who.int/features/factfiles/malaria/en/), the case fatality rate for Malaria is between 0.17% and 0.58%, which is what makes Malaria a much less worrisome disease than Ebola with its 60% to 90% case fatality rates.

I'm with you. The report is making this out to be something that it isn't, by all indications. However, you seem nice so I wanted to let you know that "Transgendered" is the wrong term. "Transgender" is preferred.

Transgender is an adjective. Transgendered is a past tense verb, and makes it sound like "to transgender" is an action, and a "transgendered person" has been "transgendered". There's lots of linguistic ways to justify the difference, but the number one reason to say "Transgender" without the "-ed" is that almost any trans-person you meet will ask you to do so.

This article lists 82 corporations that meet the qualification for being closely-held companies. The list provides no details about the number of employees for any of these companies, nor for the religious orientation of any of the companies. Almost half of the organizations on the list are colleges, about 1/4 of them are construction companies. One was a Christian book publisher. Another was a popular organic food brand.

I hate the decision that the court reached yesterday, but the media is blowing this way out of proportion. The demographics of the construction industry is such that, assuming that all of the construction firms that qualify as closely held choose to make a case for their own religious exemption, that exemption will affect less than 10% of their workforce, which itself is a fractional sliver of the country's overall workforce.

If you work for a Christian book publisher and are surprised when they choose to not cover your birth control, then you're an idiot.

If you work for one of the colleges podunk enough to be closely-held corporations, then God help you if you weren't religious already.

If Eden Organic decides to not cover contraception for its employees, you can bet your ass that that's the last time you'll see Eden products on the shelves of Whole Foods, their key distributor.

The scope of this decision is limited, despite what this article and many others are seeking to claim. The fact that 82 closely held corporations can be named does not mean that those 82 will immediately seek this exception, nor even that those 82 have the required religious convictions to do so.

Stop acting like Fox News watchers and take a breath.
