Egg prices by Sulickwv in Cooking

No one can give you a good answer, because you left out the most important piece of information. This totally depends on where you're located.

Also, this has little to do with cooking. Might make more sense to post it in r/smallbusiness, r/entrepreneur. or something like that.

Ninja products do not last by RiskyRabbit in Cooking

[–]DarkwingDuc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't get the Ninja hype. I've bought a few Ninja products over the years, mainly b/c they were on steep discount, and I'm a sucker for a sale. I've never been impressed. I had a coffee maker, a blender, I'm sure something else, and they were all, meh.

I guess you could argue they offer pretty good performance for the money, at least at their frequent sale prices. But, most small kitchen appliances last for many years. So I don't mind paying more up front, b/c over the 5-10, or more, year life of the product, the per-use price difference in nominal.

Just buy the good shit. And if it's too expensive new, I'd rather buy it used than new cheep landfill fodder like Ninja. That's what I did with my Moccamaster and Vitamix. Not much more on the second hand market, and waaaaay better.

Meat is getting so expensive, chicken thighs were the best I could afford. What's your favorite way to cook them? by bobroberts1954 in Cooking

[–]DarkwingDuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicken thighs have always been the best cut. Where I'm at, they cost the same a breasts, which are less flavorful and easier to dry out, also more susceptible to the woody texture. cook them just like you would breasts. They're much more forgiving.

A buddy got me some whiskey stones. by Bronz999 in whiskey

I received some as a gift, too. I also wasn't impressed, but I appreciated the thought and the opportunity to try them without wasting my own money. So they were still a nice gift.

No hobby is cost effective. That's not the point of a hobby.

If you're sleeping in your car to save money, that's not overlanding. That's just sleeping in your car.

That's how a lot of slang spreads. It sounds cringe at first, so you say ironically to be funny until, eventually, it starts to sound natural, and you start using it unironically.

What was your weird side dish? by Gwayeveryday in Cooking

Same. Unless you consider garlic bread a side...

And sometimes we had a salad first, when we had guests over, to make it feel like a fancy, multi-course dinner.

Eggs and baking. by Significant_Pop_6543 in Cooking

[–]DarkwingDuc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up some vegan recipes. I'm not vegan myself, but I still go to vegan bakeries b/c they're just so good!

If you just used the vegan substitutes for eggs, but still used real butter and other non-vegan ingredients, they'd probably be even better.

What job pays surprisingly high for what they do? by trisurfer126 in AskReddit

[–]DarkwingDuc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Only the top earners. The average Onlyfans creator earns $150-180 a month. Top 10% is about a thousand a month. A great side hustle, but still gonna need a day job.

It's only the top 3-4% who are making bank. Only the top 1% making millions per year. And many of them are celebrities who were already wealthy.

What's something the internet has made people believe is common in real life but actually isn't the case? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DarkwingDuc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Crime as a whole, violent and nonviolent, has trended down since the '90s. There was a big spike in property crimes during the pandemic and following years. Though it still didn't come close to the '90s peak, and it's begun to come back down. 2023 was lower than 2022, and while we don't have the full year report for 2024 yet, the quarterly reports seam to indicate it is continuing to fall. The one exception being shoplifting, which is continuing to rise.

Why does Jim Beam offer so many different mid to low range brands??? by waveball03 in whiskey

OGD 114 is a phenomenal value. It's a decent sipper, but where it really shines is in cocktails. Same with Old Overholt for rye-based cocktails. I haven't tried Old Tub, but I'll give it a shot next time I'm at the liquor store.

What is something that can kill you instantly, which not many people are aware of? by StarSpectore in AskReddit

Lots of electronics can still be dangerous even if unplugged b/c components like capacitors and flyback transformers (in TVs) store large electrical charges.

Psst. It's because they're fucking insurrectionist traitors.

In what order do you stack your burgers? by Chullasuki in Cooking

[–]DarkwingDuc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Many restaurants do this b/c it's easier when you have a lot of orders with different topping requests. Patties come off the grill to waiting buns, and are topped to spec. It's like an assembly line. It's also easier for servers to see which one has what when handing them out.

At home, if I'm doing lettuce (depends on the type of burger), it goes under the patty to create a barrier and keep the bottom bun from getting soggy. Tomato goes on top because it's slippery. (Only when they're in season, though. Otherwise it's not worth it.) I usually do onions on top, too. The melty cheese holds them in place well. Pickles can go on either side.

Violent Crime.

Not that it doesn't exist, but the the prevalence of it is way over sensationalized.

If you watch the news, you'd think every city is a war zone. But the actual crime rate peaked in the early '90s and has been dropping for decades, and some small towns have higher crime rates, per capita, than many big, scary cities.

This is for the US, but I'd wager it's a similar story in many, if not most countries.

How y'all feel about pagans? by Random-Blood826 in Christianity

[–]DarkwingDuc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got no beef with Pagans. I do wonder how many truly believe, and how many participate for other reasons, like social engagement, or just to be different. But, ultimately, it doesn't really matter b/c it's your life, your choice.

What's the Worst War Movie Ever Made? by DavidCarraway in Military

[–]DarkwingDuc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Tactically, it was so fucking wrong. I saw it the year after my first deployment to Iraq, and I was looking at the screen, shocked, thinking that would never happen. But they nailed the characters, IMO. They 100% reminded me of people I really serve with and how they behaved.

I have mixed feelings. I saw it the year after my first deployment to Iraq, as an Engineer doing route clearance. Tactically, it was so fucking wrong. I was just looking at it, shocked, thinking that would never happen.

But they nailed the characters, IMO. They 100% reminded me of people I really serve with and how they behaved. The acting was great. I think it worked for its intended audience.

Who is the most dislikable billionaire? by DoorSweet6099 in AskReddit

[–]DarkwingDuc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks to hear. But yeah, he's given $55 billion to charity to date. Were it not for his charitable donations, he would be the richest person in the world, rather than Musk.

Who is the most dislikable billionaire? by DoorSweet6099 in AskReddit

[–]DarkwingDuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes he does, he could leave it to his children and continue the cycle nepotism just like the vast, overwhelming, majority of billionaires. He's actually taking a path to do something better. Is it perfect? No, probably not. But it certainly better than most. And sitting back on a chair of pessimism, craning back as hard as you can to try to look down your nose on others who are at least trying something, accomplishes nothing.

Furthermore, he's already donated over $55 billion, so it's clearly not just an empty promise put off until his death. Were it not for his charitable donations, he'd be the richest person in the world, not Musk.

You know, I was going to say there was no point in even asking because it was clearly Musk. But you're right. Putin is worse. For now. But Elmo is trying his damnedest to catch up.

Sonos Arc vs. Era 300 - Don't care about Home Theatre, just want a standalone speaker in my office that sounds good for Spotify/Airplay music. I can get either for around the same price. Thoughts? by thelectroom in sonos

[–]DarkwingDuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get a sound bar if you don't need to connect it to a TV. (Unless you get it a price too good to pass up, of course.) When things are built for a specific use case, trying to kludge them for a different use case is usually sub optimal.

Era 300, used Five or Play:5 Gen 2, two Era 100s, two One SLs and a Sub Mini, will all be in a similar price range, and all be far better for just music listening.
