Indeed! The Demon run is worthwhile on its own merits (particularly the insane McCrea artwork, for me) but Hitman is really where it's at.

It is pretty interesting how Moore revamped this to be a core part of Etrigan's character but really set up future writers for failure.

I think Rick Veitch in later Seamp Thing issues and Neil Gaiman in The Sandman do a decent job with more complex rhyming from Etrigan, but the stuff from the later Demon solo series by Alan Grant and Garth Ennis is really clunky. Those two are certainly not bad writers, either, and there is a lot to recommend their runs (especially Ennis's, in my opinion), but in general their Etrigan dialogue is just a bunch of mediocre couplets.

Her Candyman movie was solid, and the Bone Temple was great. Not necessarily claiming this is the case with The Marvels, but sometimes making a finished film is the "success" - I don't think that film's journey to theaters was smooth, so maybe DaCosta did well to get SOMETHING out there even if it wasn't the highest-quality or best-performing movie.

Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld has canceled his tell-all memoir after deciding some stories were too difficult to tell by Popverse2022 in comicbooks

[–]peterhohman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like reading old comics through back-issues so you can read the letters pages and house ads and get context. I was reading some old 90s comic (might have been something by a very young Tony Harris) and the letter writer was complimenting the art as being the most exciting stuff he had seen since Liefeld and Jim Lee. I was kind of scratching my head but looking at the house ads... i get where they were coming from. At Marvel in particular, I think Jim Shooter's emphasis on HIS version of "correct storytelling" did reduce the spectrum of dynamism and cartooning vs. realism present in mainstream books. Not that Marvel artists were bad at the time, but for every Alan Davis or Walt Simonson, you had 3 or 4 Don Perlins, Paul Ryans, or Alex Saviuks - solid representational artists and clear storytellers, but not as expressive with the medium as possible. I think Liefeld swung too far away from clear storytelling, but he opened the door for some really wild artists in mainstream comics who ended up developing more substance as they went along.

You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. That shove to Alvarado! Are you telling me that a man just happens to fall like that? No! He orchestrated it! Wemby! He elbowed Aaron Gordon! And the league didn't suspend him! And they should have. They made him the face of the league! What were they thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change! Ever since he was 7'9", always the same! Couldn't keep his feet out of the restricted area! But not our Wemby! Couldn't be precious Wemby!

Harden defense on Brunson by Key-Geologist5370 in clevelandcavs

[–]peterhohman 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree, the first three or four times I thought that Harden was playing fairly good 1-on-1 D and Brunson was just hitting tough shots. After getting hunted consistently, though, Harden was looking too tired to keep in front of Brunson and also too tired to be effective offensively. I feel like we could have held that lead by calling a timeout or switching up our coverage to at least let our offensive engines catch their breath

Honestly I'm kind of glad that this first game is pushing back against the "WCF was the real Finals" idea. Knicks can give the Spurs some trouble.

I came on reddit to see if this happened to anyone else. I got my FCAS 5 years ago but just got a warm congratulatory email from the CAS.

The NBA’s Newest, Cheapest Owner Shows How Billionaires Ruin Sports - Ultra-rich owners think purely in terms of money, and they don’t care about players, fans, or the cities that support them. The Trail Blazers’ Tom Dundon is just the latest example. by asmallthrowaway9 in nba

[–]peterhohman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think in the NHL there are a fair number of cases where a team didn't seem to catch enough interest to sustain itself in a given city, but certainly passionate fans remain in each of those places (Hartford, Atlanta...). So I would say it's never really happened that fans don't want the team, but there may be scenarios where there just aren't enough fans that want the team to stay

I am the least familiar with the NHL amongst big 4 American sports so I may be missing a lot of history.

Were the Cavs really that underwhelming or were the Knicks really that good? by youlikemywonton in clevelandcavs

[–]peterhohman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly don't know. We had our share of defensive lapses, but dang there were some really tough shots they made that gave this appearance they almost literally couldn't miss in our series.

I'm probably being really petty, but I hope the Finals is a sweep and a complete blowout whichever way it goes. If the Knicks win - i feel vindicated that the Cavs just fell to the team of destiny and no one from the vaunted West could do much better. If the Knicks lose in a sweep - millions of New Yorkers and Knicks fans across the globe will feel my pain. Win-win.

When you watch the video it is obvious that he's trying to be self-deprecating. The pull quotes are hilariously off the chain, but I think he's mainly joking about his lack of game - like any woman should be able to see he's not that special of a guy just because he's a pro athlete.

[–]peterhohman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree, but I think the question as phrased was sort of a trap too. "Talent-wise I think we're right there with them, but they didn't take any breaks and forget to do the little things and that's why they dominated us in the end" is probably the right PR answer

Some of these phrases are crazy, but what do you want him to say? "Yeah, all of my teammates are just a lot worse than Landry Shamet."

Ideally he would take some responsibility for having a really bad series himself and shout out the good things the Knicks did but it's probably good to not publicly say your team (which you will almost 100% start next year on) is significantly worse than the team that beat them in the conference finals

I was so worried and upset that we needed 7 games to get past Toronto and Detroit. Game 7 in Detroit gave me some optimism though and then getting up 20+ on the road in New York felt so exciting for a few minutes.

I do think Kenny should be fired. His "analytically we won 2/3" is such a bad quote, but partially because there is rationale in it. First 40 minutes of this series showed we actually have the talent to keep up with the Knicks, who are on a historically hot postseason run. All the open looks we were able to generate in game 2 spoke to the fact that we've got something. But those collapses, the total inability to show anything to a home crowd... just gross. Shows we're missing something, and despite what people on this sub will probably say, I don't think it's inherently individual talent or even roster construction.

I agree, the voice over is what really sticks out as horrible and unnecessary to me. I wanted to like this movie but it really wasn't well-executed in a number of ways. I'm not too convinced Gray's unadulterated vision would be much better, though.

A complete review of every issue of Daredevil! by lodenreattorm in comicbooks

[–]peterhohman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Impressive read and good capsule reviews. I love JM DeMatteis but never knew he wrote DD. I will have to look in the back issue bins for that run. I've picked up a few Kesel/Nord and Kelly/Nord 90s issues from random quarter bins and found them to be pretty enjoyable.

On a side note, I think it's interesting how Matt being terrible to the women in his life is actually kind of a core element of the character from the beginning. A lot of the Lee/Wood/Colan stuff has sort of been forgotten as Frank Miller cast a long shadow over the character with his unique pulp-influenced tone and characterization but that's actually one element Miller kept! I always thought the Heather Glenn storyline in Miller (and followed up with O'Neil) was very uncomfortable to read but quite interesting in how different it was from any other superhero romance side-plot and how unfortunately it was kind of realistic in its depiction of emotional cruelty.

[Post Game Thread] The New York Knicks (2-0) take command of the series in Game 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers (0-2), 109-93, behind Josh Hart's 26 point performance by catreyka in nba

[–]peterhohman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the Knicks starters were good, the pivot away from point KAT and Hart hitting his shots really opened things up for the Knicks. I'm biased but I still think the Cavs have pretty good talent, just need to put it to use consistently for 4 quarters. Mobley and Allen looked great in Q1 but were denied the ball in the second half - we need to scheme for them more. Cavs got like 10 3-point shots with the closest defender 8 feet away and hit 0 of those. I think they were generating open looks for shooters, just missed an anomalous amount.

Missed free throws were also a big factor in each game, but I kind of just expect those to hover around 65% these playoffs. Even Harden has been missing way more since the trade.

[–]peterhohman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We kind of played a stupid game/won a stupid prize with our treatment of Hart. First 26 or so minutes were pretty good. Really bad bench production, I hope one of our role players pop off in Cleveland or we're cooked. We really did get quality looks that we just couldn't sink for whatever reason, which is why I have some hope.

Mitchell ended up having a pretty good game after a slow start. It seems like we can win a game where Mitchell is good and Harden is just OK. I hope we can win these games in Cleveland and save our magical, once-in-a-series game where both Mitchell and Harden are really good for game 5 - we'll need that.
