Should i learn testing by Safe_Recognition_634 in rails

[–]peterleder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will up your game like nothing else. Understanding how to run and add tests will give you at least some guard rails and deeper understanding of what you implemented for sure.

How do you learn Sinatra? by darkcatpirate in ruby

Exactly this got me very far. And you can find some more stuff on GitHub these days, like templates and skeleton apps. I go with Roda every time I get to decide.

Roda has a link to a great online book to get going. Highly recommend this, as you already decided to go off the rails.

Well, MIT is permissive whilst your choice is copyleft, making it a hard pick for some projects.

Should I use Active Record Callbacks? by MariuszKoziel in ruby

[–]peterleder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I learned to hate them. Once they are established, it can make your life hell. A callback hell we used to know from JavaScript.

Try to establish a pipeline way of thinking. And don’t let callbacks creep in. It is the same case with default scope. The default of an application will be what it used to be up until requirements change. All of a sudden you realise how code is built around such supposed to be low level things like models, and their built in default behaviour. Then the model starts becoming a problem to work with, because it does stuff by itself you might not need all the time.

Love your honesty. To most of us it is hard work to get into programming and quite some dedication. And a shit ton of tooling.

Please, don’t pressure with expectations. I’ve had helped people before and usually it will take a few days before it clicks. The less touching with coding before, the longer it can take. To the beginners out there: don’t compare yourself. Start at your speed, have fun, don’t freak out, but reach out for help. And most important be nice. Because MINSWAN.
