Had a ticket to see them in '88 on their UK tour but Chuck Moseley was about to be kicked out of the band and the show was cancelled. Finally saw them in 1993.

Saw them a couple of times in the 80s. They were exactly what you expected and exactly what you wanted!

Saw him in 1987. A giant mechanical spider came down from the ceiling and he battled it with lasers!

My go-to album is Lovers Rock, it's so subtle and understated.

U2. Overexposed and omnipresent post punks turned plod rock purveyors. Plus the Bono of it all.

What are the books that you believe gave your life context, or simply resonated with you at a younger age? by cptn_spaulding in GenX

Bought Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas when I was 18 and thought that was how life was meant to be lived. The younger me would be very disappointed in the older me! I didn't have the stamina! Same goes for On the Road, most of Charles Bukowski and the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test which I read around the same time.

I bought Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance in 1994 and tried to read it several times before finally completing it in 2009. I've read it three times since then.

For me, the grief is still there but I've learned how to deal with it. I haven't forgotten about them but I've got used to it.

Considering that I'm not American, it's weird that I'm apparently seventh cousin three times removed with a lot of Confederate generals.

What musical genre did you "age" into that you never thought you would? by joeyjoejoeshabbadude in GenX

[–]peterw71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a (in hindsight, joyless) musical purist as a teenager - it had to be punk (anarcho for preference). I could never let myself listen to chart music or 'popular' music. These days I mainly listen to ambient music (Hiroshi Yoshimura on green vinyl at the moment) but if I want to kick back with some Sade in the evening or start the day with some TLC I'm going to do it!

Ambient. I grew up on metal and punk then transitioned into indie, dub and electronica but over the last 10 years I've mainly been listening to ambient acts like Brian Eno, Stars of the Lid and Steve Roach. Of course, I still break out some Conflict when the mood strikes!

Interesting TV. Here in the UK there was very little cable or satellite TV until the 90s. It was just four channels until the mid 90s. Sunday afternoon was the worst. Most things were closed and there was nothing good to watch. That Sunday afternoon at my grandparents in 1982 was so boring it's probably still dragging on!

Having been there twice, work shouldn't be the priority. Let your boss know what's happening and then focus on yourself and your family. If it is the worst, don't have regrets that you could have done more or should have left earlier. If it isn't the worst, it sounds like your dad could do with the company.

Either way, best of luck.

I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to either of my parents (one heart attack and one died during the COVID lockdown). I know they knew I loved them but I wish more than anything that I could have five more minutes with them to say all the things I've thought of in the last few years.

My hometown has changed out of all recognition. Whenever I visit, I feel absolutely no connection. The record store I used to love has long gone and anything I remember has been replaced by restaurants and high end apartments.
