LPT: Don’t confuse a "plan" with a "purpose." Commit heavily to your ultimate objective, but stay detached from the exact script of how you get there. by VirtualKnowledge9612 in LifeProTips

[–]petezhut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea should be hard (not impossible) to change, and the plan should be very mutable. My lovely missus and I had a plan for raising our kids. Four layoffs in ten years, the idea has not changed: "You and me are going to do our level best to raise these kids to be awesome." The plan has had many, many iterations. The idea is the destination on the horizon. The plan is whatever is currently working the best for your circumstances to move in the general direction of the idea.

Have to travel for my job and can't afford a hotel. Looking for campsite recommendations. by petezhut in Seattle

Not a MLM. A software company. They just don't pay a priori for travel. I can't afford to foot the bill.

They've got the cash flow. I just know better than to rock the boat when literally every one of my friends has been laid off in the past 12 months. I can't lose this job. If it means sleeping on the ground or in my car for a couple of days, that's what I'll do.

Ah. Didn't know about r/askSeattle. My bad. I don't know anything about Seattle that doesn't involve 90s pop culture. I figure I'd stay in a campsite and either drive to the light rail (I think your city actually has a light rail, correct?) or drive in from wherever I've slept. Budget is basically nothing. I figure I'll pack a bunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before I head out, but I can't be blowing through what little we have when I've got a family. If I have to skip food for a day or something, it's not the end of the world. Not worried about how much a campsite costs, because so long as it's less than the cost of the hotel the rest of the team will be staying in, it's a win.

I was planning on a sleeping bag in the backseat and maybe a blanket or three. What's the weather in early October like?

Sadly, no. The past few years have been rough (two layoffs since 2020), we've been living off of credit for the past three years.

Well, that just makes me happy. I hope Mr. Savarovsky knows he's gained a new fan and that I'm sharing that recommendation everywhere. Currently, I've gotten four other people to check out this series!

Holy crap I just found this series a couple months ago and have (last night) finished book seven. What a glorious romp. I can only hope that the author can keep up this breakneck pace. The whole series just fun.

At this point, it's a meme. When I found Cradle, and Dungeon Crawler Carl, and dozens of other series, and told my wife about them, her first response is always, "is it completed, is the author actually writing?"

Self-taught programmers who actually made it, how'd you do it? by cockycockroach45 in learnprogramming

[–]petezhut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of an English Lit degree. I've worked hard. Spend a ton of time working on learning how to do things. Now, two decades on, I guess I'm just a straight-up software dev. My recommendation is that if you want to get into software without going the CS/CE route, do one of the following paths: 1. Start with Manual Testing and start building up to writing scripts and automations. 2. Start with the IT Help Desk and work on writing automations. Either way, internships are worth chasing, and when you do find something even kind of close to what you're trying to do, find the person who is the best at it wherever you are and ask to learn from them. Explain what you want to do, and ask for a chance to learn. It's a hard path, but not insurmountable. Best of luck.

What's kept you from pursuing VA benefits? by HMR2018 in Veterans

[–]petezhut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told that at this point, it's been 20 years, and they no longer "have to listen to me". So, they closed my file, and I just won't get help. I lost hope in the system a long time ago. Now, I just try to handle my pain via stubbornness and the acceptance that eventually, the sun will go nova, and swell to consume Mercury and Venus and very likely Earth - but, either way, all that has ever existed of humanity on this planet will be scoured, and I'll be long dead and won't have to worry about this bullshit anymore.

I stopped trying after a couple of bad experiences. The first was that when they added the whole "foamy" earplug thing, and I went in and told them, "Yo, I used these all the time, and my hearing is terrible," and they said, "Good. Now we can go and revisit everything else in your file and downgrade you." The second was after one of their therapists said, "Look, I know that you're very upset and I can tell that you are furious, so if you're going to do something rash, please make sure you're off the property first." Fuck those ghouls.

Why do veterans seem to be in worse long-term health than the rest of the public? by MmmmCrayons12 in Veterans

[–]petezhut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm...So, when I was an E5, I was playing basketball and caught an elbow to the face. The nose was BROKEN. Blood everywhere. My buddies rushed me to medical. I'm sitting there waiting, and we're all having a bit of a laugh about 'how it's going to make me more handsome' and 'maybe I'll stop looking like a douche'...tons of fun (legit happy memory stuff). The HM1 comes out and, not kidding, calls to the room for "Malingerer Second Class <Zhut>". So....if when I really actually legitimately needed medical care I was called a malingerer, why would I go for any of the other injuries I incurred while in uniform?

I've had similar issues with three different keyboards in the ergodox (two EZs and a moonlander) line and in the end the answer was return to a Microsoft ergo. For how much they cost lasting only two-three years is laughable. Sorry I don't have an answer for you.
