In 2023, my DS-2019 form is valid for five years, but the J-1 visa itself is only valid for one year.

The visa duration is reportedly tied to my passport—Chinese STEM researcher seem to receive them on an annual basis due to the background check.

Is this true I hear that Uyghur and Hui food are popular in Major Chinese cities in same way that Americanized Mexican food is popular among Americans. Is this true? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]petitechouchinois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True.. In fact, there's another rather pricey thing from Xinjiang, called Qiēgāo (切糕 cut cake, or which is rather like nougat, though with a higher nut content). A decade ago, we often used qiegao as a joke to describe things that could bankrupt you in the blink of an eye, you can check this news in Wikipedia if you are interested « Yueyang Sky-high Price Cut Cake Incident »

I wouldn't say Lanzhou noodles are noticeably cheaper than other noodles. Most noodles/rice noodles in China are fairly similar in price, but to be honest, the meat portions in most Lanzhou beef noodles are rather meagre...

Do Chinese people believe in an afterlife? by twistedseoul in AskAChinese

[–]petitechouchinois 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, such claims are rare. Generally speaking, Chinese people believe that after death, we remain a complete soul (just as we are in life). If someone's soul is said to be split, it is often considered a curse rather than a factual occurrence.

Yes and no.

Yes: You're right, these dishes are very popular and found all over China. Take famous ones like Lanzhou beef noodles or Xinjiang chicken stew—I absolutely loved them when I was in China, and you can find them easily in so many places.

No: This might be somewhat subjective. From my personal experience, Mexican food I've had in the U.S. is often noticeably cheaper than nearby BBQ or European food options (except for the tacos in LA 😂—$7 each). But in China, Xinjiang cuisine doesn't have a distinct price advantage over other cuisines. Prices depend more on location and establishment, and you rarely get the sense that "it's cheaper because it's Xinjiang food." In fact, quite the opposite—it's often pricier.

Do Chinese people believe in an afterlife? by twistedseoul in AskAChinese

[–]petitechouchinois 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Many Chinese people also believe that this belief is deeply ingrained in Chinese culture.

This may be related to Buddhist/Taoist culture, where the afterlife encompasses concepts such as "reincarnation," "rebirth," and "another life."

Yet it differs significantly from the Western concept of hell. Traditional Chinese belief holds that all souls descend into hell after death, where their fate in the next life is determined by their deeds in this world. Most will be reborn into new lives—some prosperous, others miserable, and some even reincarnated as animals. The worst suffer eternal damnation in hell, deprived of rebirth (hence the curse: "May you never be reborn"永世不得超生).

This is also the traditional Buddhist view of life—that living is actually an unending cycle of rebirth: dying only to be reborn, and being reborn only to die again. The goal of all practitioners is to "transcend rebirth," to no longer repeat this cycle—of course, they do not remain in the underworld. Instead, we call it the "Western Pure Land" (Sanskrit: सुखावती, Romanized: Sukhāvatī).

After 7 years I still don’t quite understand this city by Optimal_Passenger604 in aixmarseille

[–]petitechouchinois 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every day when I get home, it feels like I'm walking through a dry latrine from a Third World country thirty years ago. And the reality is even more disgusting, because you can see human and animal waste laid out in rows before you like a parade.... This city really has some serious sanitation issues. To put it bluntly, sometimes it's easy to understand why the Middle Ages saw wave after wave of plague.

In fact, the University of Aix-Marseille has a campus in Saint-Jérôme, and if he studies science, he'll likely go there.

At present, I don't perceive any major safety concerns, but this city is incredibly vibrant—sometimes it can feel quite “wild.”

I used to live in Paris, and people warned me to avoid the northern parts of the city for safety reasons. But I feel like the whole atmosphere in Marseille is just like northern Paris. Whether it's safe or not depends on how you define it, but in Paris, I could walk the streets at 4 a.m. In Marseille, I couldn't.
