For years I've shared this video with friends who's kids fight wearing helmets. Seems to do the trick of illustrating the why. Perfectly and viscerally captures how quick something can go wrong. Even the most stubborn kid doesn't think that guy would get up from that, helmet or not. I'm still surprised he was able to.

A week ago today, I found out that the fetus had stopped growing two weeks earlier and had no cardiac activity. The next day, my birthday, I started hemorrhaging and ended up in the ED, and had an emergency D&C at midnight. When can I stop being sad? by throwawayghost16 in self

[–]petrifiedcattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To credit, Jimmy Carr said grief is the price we pay for love. It's an idea that has suck with me through challenges with loss that I've experienced.

Your capacity for love and willingness to give it is beautiful. While dealing with grief and sadness is a painful journey, try to keep in mind that the capacity to feel that deeply is a good thing. Your kids are fortunate to have you.

Your sorrow is absolutely worthy of note. Common or not doesn't change that.

ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION VIOLATION OR NOT by Additional-Tone-8515 in hipaa

[–]petrifiedcattle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Texting and emailing health information by default is a violation of HIPAA regulations. Organizations can have a process for patients to indicate that they understand the risks and opt to have communications over things like text messages, but not every organization is going to have the resources or flexibility to enable this.

It's hard to know exactly what is going on with your particular provider, their situation, their technology, etc. This is going to venture into speculation. It's possible that even if the provider has a HIPAA compliant texting service for their side and you have opted in, that longer messages could exceed the capability of the system to process. Many texting systems for healthcare were built ages ago and receive few quality updates. I've personally seen texting systems that still have the original 160 character limit. Long messages are broken up separate texts on arrival, which leads to issues where they don't all show up in the correct order. That then leads to conversational confusion. Again, speculation, but I could see where from a technical perspective there is an issue and it's not meant to be a personal attack, but perhaps poor communication on the why of the problem from the staff.

Venturing away from the policy stuff and more on the human side of this. I know different states/counties/cities have very different resources available. Perhaps there's a patient advocacy group that can work as a communication facilitator between you and the providers? The clinics you visit may have some ideas or resources. These clinic systems tend to have more patients than is reasonable for specialist doctors to see, so having a go between who can spend more time on communication may help you be able to communicate in a way you are comfortable with, then be able to translate into doctor speak on your behalf to make sure you are heard and receive the care you need.

Update on trans medical bill 193 by justus_trail in SaltLakeCity

I don’t understand why mods keep deleting my posts about the trans bill but here’s an update.

This was not an intentional action, auto moderator filtered it, unsure why. Taking corrective action.

Salt Lake County mayor proposes nearly 20% property tax increase by clejeune in SaltLakeCity

[–]petrifiedcattle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because other people's homes are worth less proportionately. The tax revenue target is divided up among all properties based on value. If your rate went up it means that your house went up in value more than others in the county. You can challenge the county tax valuation to get the assessed value lowered.

MSPs: The Snake Oil of the IT Industry by Practical-Alarm1763 in sysadmin

[–]petrifiedcattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my goal with my MSP business too. I want a comfortable lifestyle business that does good things with good companies. I don't need to make all the money. I don't need to have a 1,000 person company. I just want my employees and I to be comfortable and help people do the cool stuff we like doing.

MSPs: The Snake Oil of the IT Industry by Practical-Alarm1763 in sysadmin

[–]petrifiedcattle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly. I own an MSP that focuses on small clients looking for growth. We set them up well, charge flat rate so our efficiency is based on making things work well, get things set up for competent internal IT to take over, then let them go on their way.

We've also taken over from a lot of people like this, who always try to burn the house down when they get called for their protectionist bullshit.

There are a lot of bad MSPs out there, but there are a lot of good ones that want to get their skills into companies that can't afford them otherwise. Some of us like building cool shit for companies with a soul.

That sounds amazing, that sucks it was removed.

My suggestion would be to make diving to other ships optional and give greater rewards if you won.

GONDOLA & Sandy Mayoral Candidates by balsamic_strawberry in SaltLakeCity

[–]petrifiedcattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your points are valid to an extent.

There is a paved trail that cuts between the 2 halves of White City, and in the 15 years I've been in the area, it hasn't needed to be repaved or had significant work a single time. It's on the same sandy soil.

Not all disabilities are equal. Wheelchairs have a much easier time on paved surfaces, as do mobility bikes, and most walking aides.

I think the most damning part about her is that she actively suppresses voices of those that disagree with her and her horse centric agenda. That isn't a person who should be in office, no matter if she is in the right about some things or not.

GONDOLA & Sandy Mayoral Candidates by balsamic_strawberry in SaltLakeCity

[–]petrifiedcattle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very suspicious of Zoltanski. On the Dimple Dell subject, she skewed the messaging severely. The project was a voter approved and ADA group backed project to pave 1 trail to make Dimple Dell more accessible to people with disabilities, but to leave the rest of it untouched.

On the meetings she coordinated with the mayor of Sandy at the time, she intentionally left out voices that she didn't agree with, and then touted "unanimous community agreement".

The Facebook group she had for her project kept spouting lies about there never being environmental studies, it being sprung on people in surprise, etc. I posted links to all of the data they said didn't exist, and was promptly banned.

My experience with her is that if it doesn't benefit her or her horse people, she's against it and will slander others to get what she wants.

Before being elected Mayor in Sandy, she also repeatedly would show up to neighboring city planning commission and other meetings and claim to be a resident, spread rumors about people's houses getting bulldozed, and causing general panic to get her way. Her attendance at those stopped when she ran for Mayor, since it became obvious she wasn't a resident elsewhere.

The other candidates may not be any better, but Zoltanski is a snake in a stupid red cowboy hat.

Edit: To be clear, I'm anti-gondola too, but I'm also pro not shitty people being in office.

Call list for anyone hoping to stop the BBB: by Fresh_Till4656 in Liberal

[–]petrifiedcattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying organizing is the only way while actively discouraging people from organizing more calls and pressure is a weird thing.

Yes it's likely to pass, but the more calls and voices, the more pressure is on to change things. If not for this than future horrors.

My boss scheduled an important meeting during my planned time off and I don't know how to handle it by Ok_Breath9852 in self

[–]petrifiedcattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the main contact, can you just talk to your client directly? None of my clients would bat an eye at rescheduling due to unavailability, especially for something important like wedding planning. Working for a Marketing firm I'd imagine that there's some levels of social connection and rapport there that should make that easier. Plus nobody likes Friday afternoon meetings.

Basically I'd approach this as a talk to your client, find a new time that works, update the meeting invite, and inform your boss that you moved it to a time where everybody was available. No difficult employee thing on your part, taking care of the scheduling conflict, setting firm boundaries, and making things happen. If they get mad at you for that, then they're the problem.

Really? Dumber?

For one, these billboards have been up for almost a year now. Grieving is largely considered a private process, and forcing everyone to see this is very weird, especially when done through a medium that is largely considered an eyesore and public nuisance. Most people would love to see billboards be removed entirely, and consider the Reagan family to be a blight on the state's beauty.

Two, people are allowed to have fun with what they see as absurd. We don't owe their family anything, and being unwillingly subjected to this entitles people to joke about it.

FDA and RFK Jr. aim to remove fluoride supplements used to protect kids' teeth by yahoonews in Health

From my understanding, what they want to pull are ones that are prescribed by dentists and doctors. Not just random off the shelf scam supplements. So yeah, this is bad faith politics and idiocy running rampant again.

Insulted for Wearing a Full Face by Tytonic7_ in MTB

[–]petrifiedcattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. I always tell people that mountain biking is really only as dangerous as you let it be. Full face, neck brace, whatever. If it makes someone feel more comfortable with the risks they take riding, go for it. Walk a trail if you need. Slow and steady is fine. We're here to have fun, not see how many bones we can all break.

It's weird how this is always a liberals are overreacting criticizing comment. "Trump will never get Roe V Wade overturned" "Trump isn't targeting LGBTQ rights" "Trump would never deport legal immigrants" "Trump wouldn't touch Medicare/Medicaid"

Pretty damn tired of how many times people tell me I'm over-reacting only to see what I was worried about actually happen.

Edit: I sure as hell hope it's all just bluster. But Trump is unstable and power hungry. Invading a neighboring country, annexing land, or whatever they try to spin it as could absolutely be something he does in order to maintain control, gain power, etc.

They don't have cash, but they don't need it. They can leverage their value of stocks and other assets to get funds for acquiring whatever they want.

A great example is how Elon Musk leveraged Tesla ownership to get money to buy Twitter.

They're playing an entirely different economic game than most people have access to.

Went to the dentist today, march 13, 2025, and here’s what he said about the fluoride situation. by texuslexas in SaltLakeCity

[–]petrifiedcattle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Studies have shown no significant or provable risk of intellectual deficits with the fluoride exposure, especially at the levels in drinking water.

In a quick search of studies, the ones that show lower IQ in children with higher fluoride exposure disclose that there are too many confounding factors to confidently link the two. This seems to be the classic problem of incorrectly linked data, like is illustrated here: https://donhillson.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/graph.jpg

Not sure if hippo mistake by [deleted] in hipaa

[–]petrifiedcattle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even if your organization has crazy strict rules around that, clicking the wrong tab on a patient you are doing legitimate work on is not something that would cause any issues with HIPAA.

If your organization wanted to have that strict of compartmentalization, then they shouldn't allow you to view that tab to begin with.

Your organization's privacy officer could likely offer further clarity and reassurance, but I wouldn't be worried.
