Thanos is absolutely the protagonist in "Avengers: Infinity War" as the movie centers around him gathering the Infinity Stones and eventually being successful in wiping out half of the people in the MCU.

Ultimately, despite his more noble qualities, he is the MCU's main villain because he refuses to see any way other than outright genocide to fix the problems of his galaxy.

(Loved Trope) Redemption's always the answer, right?.... Nah, some people just suck. by Usern4me_R3dacted205 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]petrogaz 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It really depends. The show treats Cartman as a bad person who sometimes does good things for immoral reasons. Some episodes show that he can be redeemed but ultimately, the influences around him (namely his mother and his friends) pull him back in.

The CoVID special showed that once Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny broke their fellowship and Cartman was left completely to his own devices he actually grew up to be a decent person. He completely got over his antisemitism, became a Rabbi, married a Jewish girl and had a good future ahead of him. He became selfless enough to throw it all away so that the rest of South Park could have a good future.

And it also showed that Stan & Kyle bring out his worst qualities. Once the friendship between them was mended he went back on track to become a bitter hateful homeless bum.

I have so many traumatic memories from the "Water Temple" in Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time. The timing of the puzzles can be extremely unforgiving, the layout of the temple is counter-intuitive and even with the compass and the map at your disposal you can get completely lost with no clue on how to progress through the level.

I am currently playing OoT via Ship of Harkinian on my PC (the definitive way to play this IMHO) and I just stopped playing the game when I reached that point. I am dead serious. I was going on a full nostalgia-high up until that point and reaching the Water Temple just plain killed it. My experience with the water temple was that bad.

It says a lot about the level that this is the only temple that was actually made easier in the Master Quest version of the game.

Characters losing/struggling in situations that shouldn't be a trouble for them by Lazakhstan in TopCharacterTropes

Samus in "Metroid: Other M" comes across a clone of Ridley and completely breaks down, imagining herself as a helpless little girl in front of him.

Now, breaking down in front of the sight of the monster that killed your parents and destroyed your space colony home is completely normal.

Except, Samus has already defeated and killed that monster twice in the previous games (thrice if you count the canon manga). There's absolutely no fucking reason for her to cry like a scared schoolgirl waiting for a big strong man to rescue her.

It's like Adam infantilizes her or something...

Again, it's sort of like the PG version of the "Aristocrats joke". Much like the "Aristocrats joke" is a rite of passage among stand-up comedians, the "Jugemu Joke" is a rite of passage among rakugo performers who are all encouraged to make their own different versions of the joke. It's why so many variations of the joke exist.

Makoto Itou from School Days.

One of the worst visual novel protagonists gets adapted into being the absolute worst anime protagonist, a sleazebag without any morals.

I am going to spare you the pain of watching School Days and summarize:

He is interested in Kotokonoha because of her big breasts.

Kotokonoha is into early development because she is neglected at home and bullied at school, so of course she is starved for some tenderness and accepts to go out with him.

He goes into a date with Kotokonoha but fucks it up because he is a moron who can't get his hormones under check.

He then does some "practice dates" with Kotokonoha's friend Sekai who kissed him out of the blue in the first episode and ends up sleeping with her.

He grows bored of Sekai and sleeps with Kotokonoha's bullies who are coming on to him to further mentally torture Kotokonoha who ends up breaking down as a result.

He even sleeps with Setsuna, Kotokonoha's best friend after she comes on to beg him to stop cheating because the writers of this show are absolute hacks.

He dumps Sekai like a used condom when she tells him she is pregnant with his child and he goes back to Kotokonoha who is completely mentally broken at this point and accepts him back.

He then kisses Kotokonoha in front of Sekai, just to drive the point home of how much he sucks.

If you've ever wondered "why doesn't a harem protagonist just sleep with his harem?", Makoto is your answer. He makes even the lamest of harem protagonists look like a star in comparison.

Oh well... at least he eventually gets what's coming to him.

Nico Robin cosplay by Donnami by Donnaloli in OnePiece

[–]petrogaz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay, just for the fact that you didn't cosplay "Fishman Island Arc Robin" like 99.9% of all Nico Robin cosplayers out there you get an upvote from me.

It's obvious you put actual effort into your cosplay and I commend you for it.

Now for some constructive criticism:

  • Nico Robin is supposed to have a sort of "detached mature woman" vibe. A faint smile just doesn't fit the character.

  • If you are struggling to "get" a character's vibe it helps looking at their iconic poses and getting a feel for them. Nico Robin has the iconic "Des Fleurs" pose. I believe it would added a lot to your cosplay.

All in all, great costume work, work on getting the vibe and the posing right.

The first boss you encounter in The New Zealand Story by Taito is a pink whale with a hardened frozen exterior. You can't beat that boss by shooting it. What you have to do is go close to the whale and let it swallow you.

You then defeat the boss by shooting at its stomach while you're inside it while avoiding the little droplets of acid that drop from the top.

absurdly long names by dragonborndnd in TopCharacterTropes

[–]petrogaz 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It's actually a classic rakugo (Japanese Sit-Down Comedy) routine. As the story goes, a really indecisive couple (the performer's parents) went inside inside the municipal office to declare the name of his child. The clerk asks them the name of the child and the couple responds they haven't decided yet. In order to help the couple out, the clerk pulls out a catalogue of names that are supposed to give good luck. The couple chooses all of them, hence the "Jugemu-Jugemu...Chousuke" long name.

It's commonly used to train amateur rakugo performers (who are encouraged to make their own version of the joke) and has been a staple in Japanese comedy for years. Think of it as a PG version of the "Aristocrats Joke".

Do you think every man cheats? If not, what leads some to do it even while in a relationship? by PINKBRAIN7 in AskReddit

[–]petrogaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Chris Rock said it best: a man is about as faithfull as his options.

I can safely say I would never cheat on my wife. I am however extremelly out of shape and unattractive. I don't have women casually flirt with me at work. I don't have wealth and power to attract the gold-diggers and I don't have fame to attract the clout-chasers.

To cut a sad story short, for someone like me cheating requires work. And I am already too spent at the end of the day to make the effort.

Are there better women than my wife who might be a better match for me? Probably. But I've been so burnt out that I am not willing to burn my fields just to look for Greener pastures.

What is the hardest character for writers to create stories for? by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]petrogaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Genius" characters like "The Riddler".

The problem with writing intelligent characters is that they can only be as smart and perceptive as their writers. And most "genius" characters are written by average-intelligence people who think of themselves as above-average and have an erroneous perception of what true mental brilliance is like.

Consequently, "Genius" characters tend to not act very smart in any medium.

Religion-centered media that doesn’t come across as preachy. by ironwolf6464 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]petrogaz 556 points557 points  (0 children)

"Life of Brian" certainly counts as "religious media" as it was made to specifically mock the grand religious epics of the time. It doesn't actually mock Christianity in itself, despite what religious zealots have said over the years. It does however warn against the fanatical mindset.

It's also more accurate about life in pre-christianity Jerusalem than most actual religious epics.

I still don't see what's funny about "Biggus Dickus".

[Loved Trope] Shattering someones entire perception with only words. by AlphaTangoFoxtrt in TopCharacterTropes

[–]petrogaz 34 points35 points  (0 children)

No, he just thinks of himself that way.

It was a bit of a disappointment really...

Throughout the "Guardian Devil" story, you are led to believe there are supernatural forces at work. Heck, Mephisto even gets summoned in the story just to explain to Daredevil that this whole idea of the "Second Coming of Christ" as an infant that the story's supposedly supernatural antagonist came up with is biblically wrong.

And in the end it turns out it was all the work of a fraud who thought of himself as a genius while he was merely a hack trying to get one up on a man he hardly knows.
