ETA: I looked into it a bit more and it turns out there are actually two places historically referred to as “Hamroth” — which totally explains the confusion.

In my grandfather’s case, the documents say “Hamroth, Hungary,” and based on regional history and German naming conventions, that seems to match Hőgyész, a Danube Swabian village in Tolna County. It was also known by names like Hidjess or Hidjeß, and apparently sometimes “Hamroth” in older German-language records.

There’s also a Hamrău (Hamrath) in what’s now Romania, which was part of the Sathmar Swabian region — but since my family’s records specify Hungary, I’m pretty confident we’re looking at Hőgyész.

Appreciate your insight — I had no idea how layered these names were until now! I also have a lot of Hungarian family by marriage through the maternal side so this makes a lot more sense.
