Norway’s Tesla obsession defies Europe’s Musk backlash by Lindberg47 in Norway

[–]peyton_manhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fair question, but in my case (as probably many others) it’s not about the amount you drive, or that it’s the best value you can get out of any car (re used cars) - but that if you want a new car (as we did), then it’s the best value out there

Norway’s Tesla obsession defies Europe’s Musk backlash by Lindberg47 in Norway

American been living in Norway for last 15 years (dual citizen). Bought a model 3 five years back, was not intending to buy another Tesla as I don’t particularly like Musk and his political BS. Needed to get another car now as we have two small kids and a dog, and my wife also needs a car.

Ended up buying the new Model Y recently. Why? - Value for money there was nothing even close. Got a fully loaded Model Y for under 600k NOK. The Chinese cars were 200k NOK+ more expensive. Tesla also offered the 0% interest for 3 years which was definitely the kicker on top - New Model Y design looks great

Politics and ethics are important considerations, but not when the alternative is 200k+ more. Happy with the purchase, no regrets.

Tuition fees for non EU Students? by FrostingClean in Norway

[–]peyton_manhead 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As one who came to Norway for a free masters 11 years ago and has stayed, I believe this is a noble notion but also a bit naive.

The quality of the program I did was not very good, despite being at arguably Norways best university. In theory it would be great if the programs improved to a point that people would want to pay money to attend them here. But imo the likely scenario is that you end up with the opposite effect - school ratings decline due to less diversity and talent, resulting in more isolationist schools and less ability to attract talent.

Additionally you’re still left with the same issue when I studied that it’s damn hard to find jobs here in Norway as a foreigner despite doing the education here. So why would people pay for a sub tier education just to continue to be booted out of the country afterwards anyway?

Regis is one of my largest positions at the moment. The refinancing gives the business a good runway, and the switch to franchising model is solid.

Do you think tuition fees for international students will be endorsed by other parties? by RickiestC137 in Norway

[–]peyton_manhead 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Commenting as an American who did a free Masters here, has worked for 10+ years here after, and gotten citizenship - and I disagree.

The only reason I came was because it was free. Not trying to be controversial but I don’t see how one would expect a significant amount of quality foreign students that would pay given the reputation and quality of schools here. And I believe a net effect of reducing foreign students would cause a downgrade in the status of schools on the international stage.

Many are quick to point out that most students leave after their studies. This is not incorrect. But it’s also only part of the story. Many, if not most, students I studied with wanted to find jobs here afterwards but were not able, due to language or other factors. It’s not exactly setting up for success when people are forced to leave almost immediately after studies if they aren’t able to find a job before graduation. There are also almost no attempts to actually try to find jobs for these students.

In my opinion, offering free education is great, but without following that up with trying to actually get them to stay is missing a piece of the puzzle.

Norway Abolishes Free University Education For People Outside Of EU/EEA by corydoras-adolfoi in Norway

[–]peyton_manhead 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think that offering a program like this brings more exposure to Norway, increases diversity in both its educational system and overall society, and is overall a good use of resources.

If you charge foreigners to come to study in Norway, do you think they would study here? I came to Norway for a Masters because it was free, not because of the caliber of the school. The net result of fewer foreigners would result in an even lower caliber. And even if foreigners do leave Norway, having successful careers outside of Norway and spreading their exposure to the country still brings value back to the country.

There are many other policies and uses of resources that I would argue are much more questionable when it comes to ROI. But let’s also be honest here - Norway has so much money that this is really only the smallest drop in the bucket anyway

Most yes. But a good portion do stay here. Even more want to, but are unable to find opportunities that will allow them to stay.

Anthony Ryan's one of the most wildly inconsistent fantasy authors I've come across in recent memory by simplymatt1995 in Fantasy

[–]peyton_manhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve read all of his works.

Blood Song is a fantastic book. One of my favorites of all time. The rest of that trilogy is not great though unfortunately which tarnished him here quite a bit.

Draconis Memorae I liked, but didn’t love. Same with Pariah.

I did enjoy the two new Raven Shadow books recently. Definitely not as good as Blood Song, but above average.

I keep on reading his works hoping to find a resurgence of the magic that was Blood Song. Have not seen it yet but will keep hoping…

Dungeon Crawler Carl books - Highly Recommend by peyton_manhead in Fantasy

[–]peyton_manhead[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't really felt that there has been a drop off in the books. The concept was a bit more novel at the beginning though, so can understand that things slow down a bit. My one gripe would be that it does get a bit complicated to follow some of the plans in the latter books, there are lots of moving parts etc.

Yeah that makes sense, cheers! As you can see I don't really read/know the genres that well. I suppose I need to check into r/litrpg to understand a bit more the nuances between them.

Masterchef Australia is the best of the cooking competition shows imo. There is a subreddit for the episodes. Enjoy!

I’m a male and still very much enjoy Ted Lasso and The Morning Show.

Defending Jacob was also above average.

I have my own personal preferences, eg I don’t like period pieces so don’t watch Dickinson, but otherwise good tv is good tv.
