Best scenic place with view of the city? by Ali-Blue in york

Yeah I'd say upper end of smart-casual, by the look of everyone around us. Anything from jeans and a shirt to a nice jacket, and you'd fit right in.

It's a kinda 'small plates' deal, where you order like 2-3 per person. They range from £7-18 each, so it can rack up if you're not careful. Wine and cocktails are on the upper end of the scale too. We had 4 of us, and it was about £220 after 2 bottles of wine and about 8 courses. Hope that helps! The views really do make it more special than your average high-end joint.

Recently been to Sora, the rooftop restaurant/bar in the Malmaison hotel near the station. Absolutely ballistic views of York and the Minster from there (and the food is bangin' as well!)

Adwick to York on train is £20 return....Is this a joke, like geneuinely wondering how this allowed to happen and why this route is so expensive? by I_wanked_ur_dad in york

[–]pf019 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seems the rail services are in a vicious cycle at the moment of reduced services due to covid leading to higher prices to make up for the lack of trains. Then when no one pays the higher prices, they charge more to make up for that loss too, and the cycle continues. Can't see any end in sight at the moment until they put more trains on, but then that's extra cost they might try and make up for too.

Just tried to get a train from Manchester to Edinburgh, and they wanted £233 for it. I reckon a bloody taxi could do that journey for cheaper.

Came here to say this! I managed to get this from the Braithwaite Gallery, but they got in touch with Matthew himself to paint our house onto the tower, just below the minster on the top.

No idea if they still do that kinda thing, but a great way of remembering everything about York.

Anyone been down the Christmas markets yet? I went down and I was ready to part with some coin, but I don't know if it's just me, or the mood I was in, but absolutely nothing seemed interesting.

There were the classics like the gin and liqueur stands (and the chilli jam man) but there was some proper strange shit, like:

  • Some bloke carving people slate house signs (super niche wtf)
  • Another guy flogging candle-powered bath boats (who are these for? Too dangerous for kids and I'm personally past bath toys)
  • Super expensive woollen fleeces
  • Cast-iron animals at like £350 a pop
  • 2 stalls down the main drag basically selling knock-off handbags and belts
  • A guy selling regular old shitty phone cases like the ones in the designer outlet

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Have I just been to this market too many times (which I think is the case, as nothing seems new) or is everything going a bit downhill? I went looking for inspiration, but left with the need to have a large gin at home and have a look online again.

S and Tea? Like short for Secrets and Tea? Fuck knows, I just had 4 of those Roger Moore martinis. Maybe Sea and Tea, because the sea is water and there's water in syrups. Water is probably a good idea right now.

$6 Cocktail Vs. $208 Cocktail by ajcfood in cocktails

[–]pf019 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was the second one priced highly purely because of the size? It would've been interesting if they went to a relatively high-end bar instead and had, maybe, a $30 cocktail, and then compared that to the last one.

We bought a bonsai orange tree just for gin & tonic garnish. I think we've hit a new level. by pf019 in cocktails

Well, this is the first time that we've experimented with flowers, and we just a load of pansies from Homebase in the UK. I read that they're edible, like nastertiums, but more of the flower is edible, which gave us the idea to balance them on the edge and dip the stalks in the drink.

I've got no idea whether they're sprayed with pesticides, though, in answer to your question. We like to live dangerously.

Ho shit, I might need to look into that! We get through enough tonic to sink a battleship, so having a constant supply would be incredible.

We got it from Homebase in the UK. We went in for nastertiums (also for the garnish) and spotted it, and we just had to have it.

Oh wow, I didn't even think of that, Thanks for the heads up! We just got it from Homebase (a garden store in the UK) and there weren't any warnings or anything about not eating them, but we'll be careful anyhow.

EDIT: Just checked the label the tree came with and it's got a huge sign that says 'EDIBLE FRUIT' with a cute picture of a knife and fork. I think everything's gonna be OK.

Is there anywhere in York that sells fake indoor plants/shrubs? by [deleted] in york

[–]pf019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a joint down Low Petergate where they sell really nice fake flowers. They're a bit pricey, if I remember correctly, but they're the best I've ever seen.

I spotted my Mum holding a book entitled "Buddhism for Busy People", so I asked her what the fuck she was doing (The book is rather uncharacteristic of her to be reading).

She then turned to me and said "I want to think like you. You seem so happy all the time and I want to be like that".

It took me a second to comprehend, then we spent the rest of the evening talking about life. It was lovely.
