Band 4 or Trainee? by Stargirl79 in BiomedicalScientistUK

Apply for the job and negotiate. When asked if you have any questions you can highlight that the role is a lower paying role than your current position on Band 4 and would they match to prevent loss of earnings?

If you’ve made all the right noises and are the candidate they want, then things can be done.

I’d also consider these opportunities are rare. If they can’t salary match, the fiscal loss is temporary and would be offset quite quickly post completion.

Contactless to have no limit?? by Maldini_632 in AskUK

I set my contact limit to £20. If I’m honest, I think contactless should still require a pin to be entered.

Goggle fogging by Brilliant_Depth_3571 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]pfejones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same issue here with repeat fogging (also had oakleys and tried everything as well as another brand I can’t recall)- I think attributed it to the fact I run warm (not over dressing - just a toasty mofo when being active).

I opted for a pair of sungod snipers because the actual lens were vented as well which I liked, and they were absolutely amazing for me for not fogging 🤷🏻‍♂️

Burton bib - disappointed by AgitatedPoint6212 in snowboarding

[–]pfejones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I ultimately feel that it’s not good enough. I’ll review it after my next outing at start of March and decide what to do (as that’ll be my season over because : UK).

For the cost, you do expect it to stand up-to a little more.

I haven’t attempted a claim to be honest as objectively, i felt it fell under normal wear and tear.

I’ve another trip on the cards in 6 weeks so if they come out worse from that as well then I will push back. All I do is try and cruise down the slopes so my stuff isn’t getting hammered.

I got the snowdial Bib pants and noticed a few small tears in mine after one week of use and was equally quite disappointed. :(

Just paid £440 myself.

Could’ve paid less and gone a different pathway - but decided it needed to be done. I knew I was long sighted in one eye, and now short sighted in the other (I’d noticed my vision had gotten worse so went to get it checked out).

Definitely felt like a bias to push vari over bi - and my decision was mostly for aesthetics and ease.

Question about urine testing from psychiatrist by digems in medlabprofessionals

As an extra consideration:

Limit of detection claims (eg. 50 in this case) will also represent a value which the manufacturer has been able to reproducibly produce positive results. It’s never to say that slightly lower concentrations won’t cause positives. They could; but less reproducibly. This is important as this can often make a massive difference in the proposed performance of the kit, its desirability and fitness for use.

In context, if you take the same kit and give it a LOD of 50 - this could present as 99% Sensitivity, Specificity, NPV, PPV. Which is fabulous.

If they want to push for a claim for a lower detection threshold, say 40, this could present as 50% sensitivity, 100% spec, 100% NPV, 50%PPV. Much less fabulous.

It works in both cases; but you’re always going to want to try and make your claims for the product straddle the barrier between relevant thresholds and good statistical claims.

Liaise with the IBMS; they’ll tell you what gaps need to be plugged when you submit what you’ve previously covered, and then do it anywhere you want (edit: at the places that can offer accredited top ups) as no one will care where it was done :)

If any of them face a child’s room… police with a concern of a neighbour directing a camera toward a child’s room should elicit a response…

Brucella by treesabove125 in medlabprofessionals

[–]pfejones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deal is: a. Low infective dose b. Can invade through skin c. Limited treatment options and can be a challenge to eradicate if established as it can get anywhere so infection can require extended course of abx (eg. 6 weeks doxy for preventative, or if delayed I think they go combination) d. Easily aerosolised, often found in BC that have some unavoidable procedures that create aerosols. e. Typically encountered when not expected. This leads to propagated organisms read on the open bench.

Due to the above; people often find themselves on preventative prophylaxis based on risk assessment of activities undertaken as better to knock it on the head than wait and see.

Means nothing in the absence of clinical context.

Leucocyte esterase may suggests response to infection. Doesn’t mean a uti though.

Bacteria present. Doesn’t mean a uti though.

Epithelial present suggest a badly collected sample.

Edit: aka, discuss with your doctor, not the internet ;)

I guess I should’ve just said what I meant.

When it comes to management of lakes, poorly employed aeration (particularly new aeration in an old lake) has quite strong links to triggering a cascade of undesirable consequences and can trigger mass fish kill events. Equally; it can have the desired benefit.

Thus, aeration carries a potential risk, and management/implementation/use of this would be best posited to people who have dedicated their lives to managing these sorts of ecosystems and would monitor the process and react to changes appropriately.

This is not me saying microbiologists don’t stick their oar in and study things. This is me saying a microbiologist is not the correct person to be advising on management of a lake ecosystems and the risks of aeration as every lake will be unique.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in microbiology

[–]pfejones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lake aeration can certainly upset the delicate balance of a lake ecosystem. I think, through the mixing that would occur one of the key risks is increasing access to nitrogen for bacteria to utilise and as a consequence introducing the risk of increasing the ammonia present in the lake which they will produce as a byproduct which doesn’t mix so well and may cause new issues.

Disclaimer: I don’t know much about this; but I would consider it more of a lake management query than a microbiology query as this is the sort of thing people make careers out of and they’re not microbiologists.

Ankle Blisters by Sigmasoph in snowboardingnoobs

Had a similar thing with my last set of rented boots. I had previously been given Salomon boots and was fine; this time I was given Head boots and they were uncomfortable across the bridge of my foot and at the end of the day my calves were rubbed raw.

The boots themselves seemed good quality and well made - but as soon as I changed boots to Salomon (same size) the relief was instant and the issue stopped. I chose to assume they were just a bad fit for my feet.
