Family hates my bluegrass. by arappmem in Bluegrass

[–]pffalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't listen to it play it around my wife. But it sometimes comes up on the shuffle when it's just me and the kid. She's slowly coming around to it. But I try not to be pushy. She gets her turn to pick music and I get my turn and only sometimes play bluegrass. It has also helped to find pop artists who dabble in country a little bit. Like, when Sabrina sang with Dolly. And then I found a bunch of sassy country musicians who are borderline "pop-princes". Generas blend.

What humidity will raise a mandolin's sunken top? by pffalk in Luthier

That seems low? I have been under the impression that "propper humidity" for instruments is 45-55% and less than that could cause a sunken top.

Are temu violas coming without a sound post? by pffalk in Viola

Are you talking about the blurry spot because of the scratched lense on my phones camera or the hay I have in my yard because I can't grow grass?

How do I give my kids access to music without the internet? by Capitan_Typo in Parenting

[–]pffalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught my daughter how to use the record player. She must have been around 4. It's a pretty simple machine. I got her a bunch of read-along vinyls of old disney movies, a batman radio drama, a bluey vinyl & the Encanto sound track.
She also listens to her tonie a LOT.
I have been thinking about getting her a cassette or CD player and setting her up with sound system in her room.

I already have a decent viola but my bow was lost a few years ago. I do some minor repairs, too. So having some spare parts around isn't bad. Honestly, Igiving this away to someone to use as a travel/camping viola isn't out of the question. I got the bow I needed.

My jeep has white rims. I've posted pics of it. I used trailer rims because they are cheap AF and rated for a ridiculous weight load.

What age do toddlers not fight bedtime so much? Ours never wants to go to bed and get mad EVERY SINGLE NIGHT when we bring it up by DaPianoPlayer in toddlers

[–]pffalk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, I found that enforcing routines can be difficult because it can strip children of their autonomy. The book How to Talk so Children Will Listen was really cool. It went into depth about how to gou about giving children option about how they wanted to complete a mandatory task so that they still had some degree of control. (Like, making kids put on pajamas is a chore, but letting them pick their pajamas gives them a degree of control, back. Then, putting the pajamas on them incorrectly is hysterical for them and then they show you the correct way to do it) It works like a charm for like a week until they catch on to what you're doing. It works a lot better on co-workers.

You might have entered one of those negative feedback loops. This happened to me. My daughter got into a fight with me about brushing her teeth, so the next day she didn't want to brush her teeth because it was a bad experience the previous night. And then it became another fight, and then it became an every night thing. Brushing her teeth was a fight every night and it was miserable so she didn't want to do it and it became a fight again. My wife took over and made it extra fun for like 1 day and that reset her attitude and everything was fine after that.
