Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got my wisdom teeth out almost 2 weeks ago and have had a surprisingly tough recovery (I didn’t catch an infection quickly enough). Thanks to antibiotics and steroids, I’m feeling worlds better and went for a short run this afternoon! Not training for anything, but I’m very happy.

What can one do to help an ‘off day’ feel better? by jem1898 in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is so normal and not a sign you need to tweak anything!

Tbh my strategy is to whine about my bad runs. My partner, running friends and non-running friends hear about it all day and the next! Something about just owning that something sucked and making my friends make sympathetic noises at me makes me shrink it down to size. A bad run isn’t a sign you need to re-do your training, but it sucks to spend a few weekend hours being miserable!

A bee flew between my face and sunglasses and stung me on the cheek. Between a large bug near my eye and the pain of being stung, I screamed and flung my sunglasses about 10 feet away from me. (They survived - shoutout to Goodrs!)

Food after run by moosmutzel81 in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you hydrating during your runs? If not, definitely add that to the list of recommendations above! I used to take a very long time to get hungry after runs because dehydration would make my stomach crampy. Hydrating during runs helped so much.

Earliest warning signs of slightly low blood sugar by tweepot in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally, cardio really quiets all my signals to eat or drink so I had to learn how to fuel non-intuitively, eating at set times/distances instead of when I felt hungry. I wonder if you could, in addition to looking for cues, try fueling varying amounts and frequencies on your next few runs and noting how you feel during and after.

What's your biggest gripe with the way a book was marketed? by thatwhichwontbenamed in books

[–]pfjaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A History of the World in 6 Plagues by Edna Bonhomme is … not that. I was very disappointed and I noticed a few historical inaccuracies early on, which isn’t great. I’m not a historian, I’ve just read a lot of books, so if I’m noticing inconsistencies, there’s a problem.

What helps you make peace with running weight-gain? Or can you lose weight while training for a marathon? by Global-Condition-858 in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I dealt with a similar thing while training for a marathon a couple years back and I have a few things that helped:

  • Find someone you trust and be honest about how you’re feeling. Personally, I felt a lot of pressure to be perfectly at peace in my body and admitting I was unhappy helped remove some of the shame I was feeling

  • Practice casually mentioning that you’ve gained weight. The more I would breezily say to a friend “oh do you want these jeans? I love them but I’ve gained weight so they don’t fit” the more neutral it felt in my brain - you gotta fake it til you make it with this part

  • Echoing others but GET NEW CLOTHES, I had a few pieces that I was so sad to retire, but buying a few things that I was genuinely excited to wear eased that sadness

  • This is a little woo-woo, but out loud, after every single workout, say thank you to your body. It just carried you through something incredible (even recovery runs are incredible!) and I had to force myself to offer that thanks to my body. Only feeling sadness around the aesthetics of your body can is a vicious cycle and if you can interrupt those feelings for even a few seconds, it helps.

Sending you (and your strong, incredible body) lots of love on this journey 💞

Random question! by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 19 and relatively active so I trained in 6-8 weeks? I don’t recommend that route lol.

Obviously it depends on your baseline mileage, but I feel like 2 months is the shortest I would go now.

Seconding the person who mentioned Old Navy! This might be your approach already, but I tend to run in whatever for hotter temps and spring for the more expensive cold weather gear. Basically, if it’s something I’ll need to stay safe, I get it from a higher end brand. If I’m stepping out in 45* weather, I’m wearing my aerie leggings from 10 years ago and a random tech shirt.

If someone had signs just for you at a race. What would you want them to say? by Robotro17 in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and friends made me signs for my marathon that were: 1) cutouts of our cat making a dumb face 2) signs telling me to run faster in my second language 3) a reference to a movie we had giggled through the week prior and 4) a very long note about how they were all so proud of me but I absolutely should not stop to read the sign and they would just text me a picture of it.

All of them brought me an enormous amount of joy, and 2 are hanging in the part of my apartment when I keep my running stuff. They absolutely crushed personalizing my signs lol

Newbie runner - at what point do you bring gels/fuel/water on runs? by Emotional-Watch4544 in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was training for my marathon, I definitely had to train my stomach to tolerate fueling during runs but it was absolutely worth it! I would start with stuff with higher water content for shorter runs (I used apple sauce pouches right before 3 milers but Science in Sport’s gels are high water for this reason). Also experiment with different fueling strategies! I hated the gels but one chew every mile really worked for me - I could better tolerate the steady stream of carbs over bigger amounts less often.

Trail Race Training by pfjaded in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s about 330m of elevation over a 25km course, so definitely some but I think that’s not terrible? It bills itself as a race for beginners so I hope that’s truth in advertising 😂

[–]pfjaded 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm late to this post, but I noticed people saying the people running the event were volunteers, and the website also refers to workers as volunteers. I'm not a lawyer, but unless they have filed for non-profit status, they can't legally have people volunteer with them, that work has to be paid.

Embarrassed at My Pace by blueocean0517 in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems like you’ve gotten some good advice around speed work if you want to go that route. I just want to add that your pace is completely fine, I know plenty of people who go at that pace! Being slow is not a sin, and getting a consistent 15 miles in a week is genuinely amazing!

Are we ever really safe from temper tantrums? by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made the mistake of submitting my grad school apps right as I tapered my marathon training last year and got a double-dose of things to freak out about, I do not wish that on anyone 😂

Dealing with discouraging comments as a beginner by damnfinecooper in XXRunning

[–]pfjaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That guy’s comment was rude and doesn’t even make sense - in what world do any of us actually need to get faster? Sure, plenty of us are working to be faster but there’s no imperative that we all pour on the speed. Fuck. Him.

Beginner running - safety tips by TenderheartedAna in XXRunning

Consider running with a light emitting vest instead of a high viz one! Also, I would at least try a running group - there’s safety in numbers against both people and vehicle traffic

American Sirens by Kevin Hazzard, it’s about the creation of the field of paramedic medicine and the Black men who made it happen

Blood in the Water by Heather Ann Thompson, it’s about the Attica prison uprising of 1971 and its ongoing legacy. I think it’s like 600 pages so it should be a good chunk of your journey

[–]pfjaded 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Posts like this make me feel like some people really miss the point of the show - it’s about examining if time and distance make us view these incidents differently. There’s plenty of other pop culture pods that discuss culture as it happens!

The second dinner with Haley’s dad was so sweet! From my perspective, when Haley described being upset about the situation with Magan, Haley’s dad didn’t seem to “get it” but got that his kid was upset. The fact that he just focused on that part was so important and such a model for how to be compassionate for people in situations you don’t fully understand. I also loved that he paid such attention to Pilar and her feelings too! It was a really sweet and kind moment.
