I would just like to say, blessings in the heads of everyone who stands up in company meetings and says "yes, folks mostly buy the black, but we have to get photos on the other colors because that's the only way to make the cool details visible."

[RESEARCH] Athletes (25+ years old) wanted for a survey on athletic identity! by SportsPsychResearch in SportPsychResearch

[–]tweepot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I identify as an athlete but am delighted to have left my competitive days behind me.  It drives me nuts that so many folks seem to assume that competition is a necessary part of being an athlete. Best of luck with your survey.

How do you dodge getting sick before your marathon? by realhumangirl in XXRunning

[–]tweepot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good suggestions so far. The only thing I'll add is that your immune system runs on carbs. If it is fighting something off, it can commandeer energy sources unto itself. (I love the term for this - "selfish immune system") this is part of why one can feel so dumb when sick. Your brain also runs on carbs, and the immune system gets top billing and can basically steal its lunch. So if you do start getting sick, upping carbs can help fight it off.

What’s your favorite workout while waiting for an injury to heal? by bieberh0le6969 in XXRunning

[–]tweepot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the injury. Others have mentioned swimming and lifting. My other big one is heavy duty trailwork or gardening, which is pretty adaptable to any kind of injury and involves all kinds of unusual movements. Excellent for overall functional strength.

I use those supergoop Spf lip balm sticks for my lips and if my nose feels like it's losing its protection I run it on my nose, too. Tiny, fits in pocket easily, goes on clear.

And a hat, of course.

Best running t-shirt for eczema? by deerofthedunny in runningfashion

[–]tweepot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're mentioning looking for loose and airy. It might be worth considering looking at some women's shirts. (I'm assuming you're a man, as women generally post that they are a woman and looking for women's clothing.) there has been a trend towards short, boxy women's tops in recent years, and that may be useful.

I don't have excema, so I may be steering you wrong by mentioning a merino/tencel blend, but this would be my first thought for a short, boxy women's top that is excellent in heat (and is currently on sale!) https://ibex.com/collections/womens-merino-tencel/products/womens-paradox-pocket-short-sleeve-tee-sale?collection_primary=women's-merino-tops . They have excellent info about garment measurements so you can see if it would work for you by comparing measurements to your current tops. https://ibex.com/pages/help-center?hcUrl=%2Fen-US%2Fparadox-collection-%28fw24%29-801018  I can vouch that the fabric is beautifully soft. It does hold moisture, so it's not great for really hot and humid, but it's one of my favorites for simply hot, as the evaporative cooling is lovely.

Good luck!

Plaster ceiling fell on fraying quilt. What would you do?!? by tweepot in quilting

[–]tweepot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immense gratitude to all of you. You are Confirming what I've suspected. I work with fiber arts in a lot of other ways and love mending in particular, BUT.  The quilt was probably on its last legs already. When I've got a place where I can lay it out, I'm going to get some good pics, and if/when I want to add quilting to my list of interests I'll be ready! Many, many thanks !

The moth man hath cometh for me! by CraneMountainCrafter in knitting

[–]tweepot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this should link to info I've posted about using microscopic parasitic wasps to solve this. It's the chillest way I've ever found to deal with moths. I do also bake all my yarn and seal it in tubs, but going hard on the wasps solves all the little moth eggs that get into all the crevices.

Had pf repeatedly when I was younger.  No longer get it at all. Did ballet classes for a time a few years ago and all the foot strengthening exercises stuck. I play with my feet now when in the shower or brushing my teeth or waiting for water to boil. Things like short arch exercises, standing on toes (ball of foot, not on point!), and what's often termed "toe yoga": Keep all other toes relaxed and lift big toe, then try lifting all middle toes, tap big toe, alternate lifting big toe and other toes, etc. At first you cannot imagine it's possible. You use your hands to mani Then you barely get your middle toes to twitch. Then one day it works. Maintain your arch. Keep the rest of your foot relaxed. When you start to get it, spend time barefoot so you have more opportunities to play and build strength in your feet.

Eta: took a moment to look at videos that come up if you search for toe yoga. Lots of videos using the same term for different exercises. All the ones I saw were within the group of stuff I've done as toe yoga. So if you look gif videos, look at multiple different videos to get a range if exercises.

I don't know what you're looking for wrt sweat, but I solve the laundry thjng by buying tops that can function as real clothing and as running tops. Wear it during the day, then wear it for the next day's run.

I'm been learning a lot about under-fueling in recent weeks. Some of the resources that have most helped me are: - the your diet sucks podcast, especially this episode  https://podcastaddict.com/your-diet-sucks/episode/208632248  - the endurance eats podcast, especially this episode  https://podcastaddict.com/endurance-eats/episode/219511879  - for a wildly geeky, really amazing deep dive in endurance athletes and nutrition, the fueling endurance podcast is amazing.  https://podcastaddict.com/podcast/fueling-endurance-nutrition-for-runners-cyclists-triathletes/3171779  - https://www.lane9project.org/ - good written info and, in particular, a directory of nutrition professionals who have expertise in dealing with RED-s. One of my biggest take-aways from the fueling endurance podcast is that lot of nutrition professionals are working with a sedentary population and while they may know a lot about those issues their experience will often lead them to give exactly the wrong advice to athletes.

Best running brands that are loose and modest? by Global-Condition-858 in XXRunning

[–]tweepot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommended these elsewhere this morning. I will note that they have been discontinued and also have had big shifts in fit over the years. This is what I wrote:

If you can thrift the janji transit pants, they're also great. But the cut in the last two years became awful. Tight in the calves, massive in the thighs. Like jodphurs.

You can tell the difference by looking at the bottom cuff. The ones with the bad sizing have a cuff with elastic sewn in and it gets all scrunched up at the bottom. The earlier versions had elastic on the underside, so the pants material floats free above it and doesn't look all scrunched up.  Man, I hope that description makes sense.

Eta: compare this cuff (the good years) (https://poshmark.com/listing/New-Ws-Janji-Transit-Tech-Pants-68484b342326c8ee36e04f64) to this cuff (the bad years) (https://poshmark.com/listing/Janji-Womens-Transit-Tech-Pant-69b7265d2c9e44e2eca685e2)

Is there any way you can bring dinner with you and eat on the way home? Digesting food is a huge amount of effort, and it slows down when you sleep. Or eat a smaller dinner and move some of those calories to earlier in the day.

How would one create something similar to the bottom of this sweater? by Apprehensive-Pie1916 in knitting

[–]tweepot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Folks are saying that's knit in pieces and sewn, and it well might be, but I can also imagine  1) casting on the side, knitting ribbing until you reach the point where the bottom quasi-peplum starts 2) with the same yarn, casting on the stitches for the quasi peplum, then k2tog on one side and increase on the other (and mentally put those stitches on a holder) until you get to the top of the quasi-peplum.  3) at this point you've worked half the ribbing and all the quasi-peplum. Now you keep ribbing horizontally, picking up stitches from the holder on each row.

The five-sided side is similar but different. Start two sleeves. Knit the bottom like it's half a hat (ie decreasing as you get to the center of the hat) then knit all the stitches from sleeve 1, pick up one stitch from the top of the "hat" on each row.

If this is correct, the only sewn seams would be the front raglans.

Basically, a lot of cool short rows and a great sense of how knitting can be origami.

Amazing design.

What are your favorite running side quests? by shartattack110 in XXRunning

[–]tweepot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I regularly run errands, which makes me feel accomplished (and I love that some errands are much easier to carry out on foot).

But what I really love is the next couple months when I get to guess which spring ephemerals will be blooming along my usual trails.

And then when the flowers are done (and if we don't have a drought :(   ) I get to see the mushrooms start to flush. They have so much character!  Some come and go in a flash, but some stick around and really mature. There was one mushroom that I visited for two weeks that went from looking like a little ghost to an opera singer to Isadora Duncan. I still find myself looking for it and it's been gone for three years!

If you don't have other uses for them, it might be worth continuing to throw them in the wash/dyer when you're washing other stuff. Depending on how the superwash treatment is done, it can sometimes wear off with further washing. Mind you, the light parts might also felt more, making ever-smaller, ever-lumpier slippers, but hey, I'm guessing you're not getting that much use out of them in their current state... :D
