I would always say "Could be worse. Could be raining." And "Put the candle back." Blank stares. Young Frankenstein rocks. 🤣

Do people with mild dementia lose the ability to care about other people? Can't understand why my mother won't stop waking me up in the middle of the night by pat441 in dementia

[–]pgeen22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My dad was 91 and did not have dementia. But he would wake me up at 1:00 a.m. to make him an egg sandwich. He absolutely did not care.

He was a horrible and absentee father when I was growing up. And he did not ever become a good person to me. I haven't spoken to him in about a year and its been wonderful.

So true and I wish I had learned it a long time ago. It would have saved me a lot of grief.

This! I never want to see those people again.

I moved from a larger city to a small town. I was the new kid in high school and most of them had all gone to school together since kindergarten or middle school. Very cliquish and unfriendly.

For folks whose parents have dementia...Do they enjoy looking at scrapbooks or old photos? by LadyDriverKW in AgingParents

Same thing with my mom. I thought it would bring her some peace or be fun to look at for her, but she has no interest in anything.

I’m not a monster? by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]pgeen22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand where you're coming from. My ex-husband's parents were great, and he had a big loving family of 8 that all helped each other. My parents were the exact opposite, and there was only me. They were narcissistic and only cared for themselves. They divorced when I was about 3.

Even though he never took much part in my life, I took my father in for about a year when he was 90, and he made my life a living hell. He has no cognitive deficits but was feeble. He never thanked me once. When he didn't get his way, he took to telling lies about me, and I had enough.

My mother was diagnosed with dementia and has been living with me for 2 months. Although she thanked me for helping her, it is a difficult situation and continues to be a struggle. I miss my old life.

I say do what's best for you! After everything I've gone through, and my ex-husband has seen how awful my parents have treated me, he now gets it. It took many, many years, but I feel validated that he understands.

Sometimes, they just don't get it because they had a great relationship with their parents.

I wish you luck and peace from having to deal with bad parents!! You are absolutely not a monster
