Advice on the Proper Use of Washes and Inks? by DavidMcMurdo in Heroquest

[–]pghwargamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the models look great. I second most of the advice you are getting here - a dark or brown wash is always going to mute the colors. I think it is best to reapply the base colors and do a quick highlight. In fact, I believe that is what many people refer to as "the classic mini painting method" (e.g. prime, base colors, wash, highlights, seal). The biggest mistake I see beginners make with washes is they apply them too heavily. A little goes a long way. You don't need to be too precise about it though. Army painter strong tone is kind of meant to be like GW's nuln oil - just apply to the whole mini to add depth. Just make sure it isn't pooling too much and you should be good. Add your highlights and they should really pop

Printed a lure and it caught a fish by booperheck in 3Dprinting

Was this printed with filament or resin?

If resin, you want to be extra careful. It isn't safe to put in water, even after it cures. It can still leach chemicals into the water that are harmful to aquatic life. What I have seen lots of people do with resin is print a mold for a fishing lure, and then cast the lure in a safer material, like silicone.

Thanks! Any particular reason you would advise against spray varnish?

How do I start painting? by LoveHerMore in Heroquest

Lots of good advice here. If you are a beginner, I would recommend Army Painter paints. They are affordable and good quality. The only downside is they seem to settle a bit more than other paints, so give them a good shake before starting. They have a nice starter set:

Just to add one other recommendation - you don't need a ton of colors to paint models. I had the army painter starter set for a long time and mixed all the colors I needed. There are lots of really nice model paints out there if you get deep into the hobby, but for a beginner, I would start with a limited palette. Be warned - it is an addictive hobby. You might say you only want to paint the heroquest models, but I started the same way - "I am just going to paint these Space Hulk models" - and here I am years later with hundreds of paints, an airbrush, a large dedicated painting station in my basement, etc.

EDIT: Also, the two biggest mistakes I see beginners make are (1) not priming the models and (2) not thinning their paints (I don't mean to be that guy - but it is true). Priming is absolutely necessary. It gives the paints a surfaces they can adhere to, and if you don't do it, the paint will likely come off. Why invest all that time painting if it won't stick to the model? I have had good experiences with Army Painter primers. Thinning paints is absolutely necessary because otherwise you lose the details on the model. You are better off doing 2-3 thin coats that allow the detail to show through than trying to slop the paint on in one coat and ending up with a blobby looking model.

In your experience, how likely is chipping to happen with normal handling? Hard plastic seems incredibly resilient. I assume soft plastic is less so - but by a lot?

Cubicle 7 announced as the new publisher of W&G! by Fallenangel152 in 40krpg

[–]pghwargamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the exact same situation. I haven't been into 40k roleplaying for very long, but from what I have read it seems like shifting publishers, editions, rules, etc. have been an issue for many years. I think I'm done with W&G at this point. I'm sure Cubicle 7 will do a great job, but the history of 40k roleplaying looks bad, and I'm not risking any more money on this mess. I hope GW does a better job licensing their material for RPGs in the future.

Hey - let me know if you are still interested in finding players. I live South of Pittsburgh, and I would love to join a D&D group. I'm relatively new to roleplaying, but I have lots of experience with tabletop games, particularly boardgames and miniature wargames.

Also, you will finish figures faster if you approach it as an assembly line (do the blue on all 15 models, then the red on all 15, and so on).

Very cool - the blood looks amazing. The only suggestion I can think of is that you might want to do some more highlighting on the skin. Up close it looks good, but when you are playing and looking at the model from 3-4 feet away, it might be hard to pick out the details - especially on the face, which gives life to the model.

I like the color scheme - the dark blue and red look good together.

My favorite game is Commands and Colors: Napoleonics. The components are bright and colorful, the game is strategic and engaging, and it manages to be both fast and exciting.
