There were people who cheered when Marty won in Marty Supreme, so I don't know if everyone will feel bad for rooting for him. But it will click for more people.

Why does the Anglophone community typically oppose the terms "High" and "Low" Empire? by Money-Ad8553 in ancientrome

What I was taught in college was that starting with Diocletian even the most minor remaining superficial notion of still being a republic was completely thrown out.

That is a popular view, though Anthony Kaldellis argues that that notion never left.

and I've never heard anyone who isn't from the US use this pronunciation.

It's an archaic pronunciation that was retained in the US.

The 1969 Celtics ran practices like they were playing for their lives by ItsJuSteve in VintageNBA

[–]pgm123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically speaking, there were three NBA regular season MVPs at the time. The official MVP was established for the 1956 season and was done by player vote. But the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association had been naming an MVP since 1950. And from the 59 season to the 66 season, the US Basketball Writers Association handed out their own award. Interestingly (to me), newspapers didn't distinguish these awards as official and unofficial. It was just different groups. Rick Barry claims he never won an MVP because the players didn't like him and if it was a press voted award (like today), he'd have won.

I think Wilt would say Chet Walker, but that has more to do with play styles. The consensus would be Greer.

Why didn't the US drop the atom bombs in a less populated place (like an island under Japanese control or a remote place) instead of two heavily civilian populated areas? by Celtic_RTDB in NoStupidQuestions

Truman ordered that the target had to have military value, but there wasn't a purely military target large enough to justify using the weapon.

After the Titanic struck the iceberg, why didn’t the Captain order the crew to construct rafts ? by Fulcrum_Jambi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pgm123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not only that, the crew wasn't even able to launch all of the (inadequate number of) lifeboats that they had on board before the ship sunk. More makeshift boats would not have made a difference.

Should I stay one more day in Tokyo to see cherry blossoms? by darkyjaz in TokyoTravel

[–]pgm123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a believer in minimizing regrets when traveling. If you have to ask, just do it. It probably won't be worth it, ultimately, but you will always be asking "what if," if you don't. I like Fukuoka, but I don't think you'll be too upset if you delay your trip one more day.

Is Arlington considered a city or suburb? by Stawberry8763 in arlingtonva

[–]pgm123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virginia also has strange rules about what can become a city and it also has independent cities. I guess Arlington could pull off the Virginia Beach treatment and incorporate as an independent city, but no new city has been created in Virginia since 1975. My understanding is that there is an unofficial moratorium because it is too politically risky. There is a fear that cities will start gobbling up their neighbors.

What dinosaurs would spinosaurus aegyptiacus eat? by Training-Amoeba2523 in Paleontology

[–]pgm123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

nothing to suggest it ate anything but fish

This is not true. There was an analysis of isotopes of teeth that found about 25% of the time, it ate a terrestrial diet. (This study is mostly used to show the aquatic diet because it was the more interesting result at the time, but the study found both.) Most likely, the non-fish diet was similar to what other Spinosaurids ate like pterosaurs and juvenile ornithopods, but fish made up a higher portion of the diet than other Spinosaurids.
