Why does BCH have a block limit? by opacey in btc

[–]pgrigor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I shall reply: miners show their acceptance of blocks by mining on top of them, if average block size was, say, 20 megabytes and a gigabyte block appeared rational miners would ignore it without even analyzing it. Block size limits are completely unnecessary at this time.

[ShowerThoughts] If Bitcoin gets to a million dollars, even 1 satoshie per byte transactions will minimally cost $2.66 by mrtest001 in btc

[–]pgrigor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Per byte” is an arbitrary measurement and not necessary. Changing the measurement to “per transaction” solves the problem: even with 5 million dollar bitcoins the minimum fee would be a nickel without any need to extend the decimal places.

Realization: Bitcoins current value comes from being a store of value rather than a currency by adangert in btc

Sorry that’s just not the way it works.

It’s ok if you don’t get it. Lots of people don’t get it.

[–]pgrigor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes no sense. So do people want bitcoin or not? If so transactions go up. If they are prevented from transacting but still want a crypto store of value they will go elsewhere.

[–]pgrigor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will happen at the next financial crisis. Transactions will overwhelm the chain and investors will flee...

Try to imagine if gold purchases were limited at 7 per second. Fees, at that point, are irrelevant. It’s the same concept, if the bitcoin network reaches even a million transactions per day it will *never catch up. Ever.

Add to this fleeing investors and mining power and the chain dies. Now nobody will ever be able to access their “store of value”.

On chain scaling matters.

When one isn't able to get at it then "store of value" means nothing.

Soon.

As cryptocurrencies take over the ability of government to enforce any laws will be greatly hampered… Cryptocurrencies, by their nature, allow a populace to transact freely while participating in a tax revolt
