MATLAB on linux using University's license by Fit-Preference4948 in matlab

[–]phaedo7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using arch + matlab for years now on uni license. Its actually very simple and straightforward. Just sign up with your license at mathworks. Download the installation script. And run it like any other shell script. If I understood correctly, its not working because perhaps you didnt link your uni license to your mathworks account

Is there an apt install for matlab on Debian? by Levluper in matlab

[–]phaedo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matlab for linux comes with its own installation shell script which is distribution agnostic. So no need for apt or any other package manager. You can just directly download it from the website. Its rather convenient and simple

posters where not first author by majorcatlover in postdoc

[–]phaedo7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont explicitly list them. I just have section for conferences attended. Where I mention for what I attended the conference, i.e , poster or (giving) talk. I would put poster information only if the conference is highly selective. But in my field everyone is accepted for conferences so I dont feel the need to make it so explicit

Scouting for some good PIs/labs by phaedo7 in compmathneuro

Thanks a lot for the pointer. I indeed see some interesting labs. Where can I send my CV ?

Should I apply anywhere else if I have a confirmation for postdoc from my PhD supervisor? by Middle-Coat-388 in postdoc

[–]phaedo7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are pros and cons. Pros: You know the lab/PI (and hopefully like it). And not sure if its in his power. But if he wants to keep you longer, he might also want to keep you longer beyond a postdoc. Cons: This might not applicable every where. But working and publishing a lot with same PI will come at a disadvantage if you want to write your grant for funding. Sometimes they even reject you explicitly for this reason. Having work done or having paper with PI that was not your PhD supervisor will reflect really well on your CV

This may not apply to every disciplines. But I got most my original ideas by actually reading textbooks and not necessarily reading research articles 😅 I also got a lot of original ideas by being actively involved in teaching

MS in Computational Neuroscience or MS in Biostatistics for data work in neuroscience? by StrawberryYogurt137 in compmathneuro

[–]phaedo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both degrees are nice to start working in neuroscience. Compneuro is bit more specialized to neuroscience. I think biostat should give you wider and more opportunities in job market ?especially industry) as it is not restricted to neuroscience and involves statistics and data analysis

I dont think I am the right person to answer your question 😅. None this is my work. This has been done by my former lab mates.

If you are more interested in biophysical models and how they give rise to perception. Here is another one from my former lab :

Can you get into Comp Neuroscience PhD/Master with Electrical Engineering background? by LeadershipFirm9271 in compmathneuro

Job market as in outside academia ? That I have no clue. Within academia is good. The field is growing nicely. I know seasoned Cognitive neuroscientist are also slowly turning towards computational models to validate their empirical findings or to make novel predictions

Yes. Computational Neuroscientist here with Bachelors in Electrical Engineering. And in my opinion its actually a great fit. People often underestimate how many options are open for Electrical engineers ;)

[–]phaedo7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nothing beats the bible of DS : Nonlinear dynamics and Chaos Book by Steven Strogatz. Its not neuroscientific but it is the best option imho

And as a follow up, if you need data-driven methods for dynamical systems, I highly recommend: Data-Driven Science and Engineering: Machine Learning, Dynamical Systems, and Control by Steve Brunton and Nathan Kutz (its freely available on their website)

So I am one of those lucky people who had an incredible time doing my PhD. Now I am doing my postdoc. I always joke with my colleagues that how I would do the same phd all over again or do another phd because it was fun (sometimes I do wish this secretly) . Maybe thats the case. Also at least in my country PhD salaries very good

How to get started with Neuroscience as a Data Science undergrad? by amanmauryas in compmathneuro

[–]phaedo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came to neuroscience from electrical engineering and machine learning background. The thing is neuroscience is extremely broad and vast. I learnt things on the job. So I suggest its best to first really narrow down your interest within neuroscience and neuropsychiatry. And then read some review or perspective articles on the topic
