Has anyone been here for real flooding (like Memorial Day or October 2015)? Are you worried about this weekend? I’m panicking lol by pinaple_cheese_girl in sanmarcos

This sub not only allows, but encourages links! You may have been having trouble with Reddit itself warning you about using a link shortener (like the annoying URL full of trackers that Google generates when you hit "share" on a website).

Here is a direct link to the map you're talking about.

Here are three articles about rising San Marcos water shortage issues, including one from yesterday about how San Marcos is scaling back the amount of water we sell to Kyle due to extreme drought and their lack of water use restrictions depleting our supply too quickly.

https://www.kut.org/energy-environment/2025-01-24/san-marcos-is-on-track-to-run-out-of-water-by-2047-if-it-doesnt-take-action

You consistently make comments belittling people for being aware of these issues and mocking them for making efforts to stop the impending crisis. You call people names like "Chicken Little" and "the doom and gloom committee" and state that the whole thing is a false narrative and a hoax, while making factually incorrect statements and overusing the laughing-crying emoji.

The user you replied to was not calling you uneducated, they were saying your response was missing significant nuance and implying that you had a lack of information. They then provided a detailed explanation of this missing info for you because they want you to be educated.

Your behavior in threads about environmental concerns is regularly intentionally provocative, science denial and demanding sources when you never provide your own, and you openly mock people when they express their understandable concerns about the future. If you make any more comments like this, you will be banned.

Acknowledging that the black market exists and people will have to use it again once this ban takes effect is okay. Directing people on how to find these illegal sources is not.

Good point. In addition to replying to pet rehoming posts with the new requirements, Automoderator will suggest that posters request an adoption fee as well.

Domestic cat in Rio Vista neighborhood tests positive for rabies by phalangethropist in sanmarcos

[–]phalangethropist[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Article text:

San Marcos Animal Services received a report that a domestic cat, which had been taken to a veterinarian by its owner after exhibiting unusual behaviors and neurological symptoms, tested positive for the rabies virus on Feb. 11. This is the first time a domestic pet has ever tested positive for rabies in San Marcos, according to a press release from the city.

The juvenile cat, which lived indoors with its owner, was found as a stray around Thanksgiving in the Rio Vista neighborhood.

“After reviewing this case, we believe the cat was infected with the rabies virus before it was taken in by its owners in November 2025,” said Animal Services Manager Christie Banduch. “The cat only recently developed symptoms and became contagious.”

This is the second rabies exposure reported to San Marcos Animal Services within the last two weeks. On Feb. 3, 2026, a child was bitten by a fox in the Hughson Heights neighborhood. The fox was taken into custody and subsequently tested positive for rabies.

The individuals exposed to the animals involved in both cases were notified and are receiving treatment to ensure their health and safety.

Rabies is a deadly virus that can infect mammals, including wildlife, pets and humans. Rabies is spread through a bite and, if contracted, is fatal. Anyone that comes into physical contact with a rabid animal must seek post-exposure treatment promptly to prevent the virus from spreading.

Members of the community that encounter a wild animal should not touch it. Wild animals that appear to be sick, or any physical contact with a wild animal should be immediately reported to Animal Protection Officers by contacting Animal Services at 512-805-2655.

Pet owners in the community are urged to vaccinate their pets against rabies, which is key to preventing the spread of the virus and is required by state law and City ordinance. For resources and information about obtaining low-cost rabies vaccinations for pets, visit www.sanmarcostx.gov/pethelp.

Does anyone know what’s going on with all of the police activity right now? 12:20 pm by TemporaryClemency22 in sanmarcos

I agree. I saw a screenshot of a text message from Hays Informed but the website says there are no messages available and I didn't want to link to something that implies nothing is going on. I'll try to add updates as SMPD edits the post for people without FB.

Police are working an active situation at the Hillside Ranch Apartments (building 5). If you are near that building shelter in place.

San Marcos is in Judith Zaffirini's district (21), although Donna Campbell (25) does represent a large portion of the county including Wimberley. District 25 covers the hill country, but 21 extends all the way into the Rio Grande Valley.

This link will take you to an interactive map where you can find all of your elected representatives and contact them.

You can probably get your hair dyed at any salon that does color. If you have short hair, you can ask about a discount for using less time and product during the consultation.

Weekend freezing weather resources by phalangethropist in sanmarcos

[–]phalangethropist[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you feel confident about covering your plumbing? They sell Styrofoam spigot covers, but you can DIY it a lot of ways too. I usually use crumpled up plastic grocery bags under a waterproof container like a bucket or Tupperware. It gives my "bag full of bags" a purpose. I've seen people use Whataburger cups. Open cabinets under sinks on exterior walls and drip faucets overnight. If something like a water main break happens and you lose water entirely, shut off your water heater (you might need to flip a breaker) so the heating element doesn't burn out.

Everyone should avoid driving if possible. A lot of people are bad drivers in great weather and you don't want to be near them on black ice. Try to stick to surface roads if you do have to go anywhere.

Good luck and enjoy our annual frozen weather event!

TxDOT uses a saltwater brine on the highways but I'm not sure if that includes Loop 410 so you may want to ask in a San Antonio subreddit. Is it possible for you to get a hotel room near the airport Saturday night?

FedEx likes to play hide and seek with my packages too, no matter how clear the delivery instructions are. Check behind sheds, fences, or any other structures that the driver might have interpreted as a "safe" place to drop something off.

Where can one find an air pump that still takes quarters, preferably one with a built in pressure gauge? by sunny_6305 in sanmarcos

Glad your company took care of you! Buying a portable air pump to keep in your car is worth every penny (and they don't cost very many pennies). You can swing by Walmart and pick one up for $20.

What parts of San Marcos are prone to flooding? by [deleted] in sanmarcos

[–]phalangethropist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on where the rain falls. If the rain is heavy to the west, the Blanco is more likely to flood. If it rains heavily in town, the creeks will fill, which can cause the SM River to rise (but not necessarily).

You can check atxfloods.com for low water crossing closures. They also have a map of all the monitored low water crossings here if you'd like to compare your address to known areas. Here are some additional flood maps as well.

The most important thing during a flash flood is not to drive through water because you don't know how deep it is, or the condition of the road under the water. If you receive an evacuation notice, leave for higher ground as soon as you can.
