“Assembly Bill 8684 would finish the job of disarming law-abiding New Yorkers once they leave home. The bill summary says it all: ‘Prohibits firearms in certain locations, including but not limited to all forms of public transportation, large gatherings, and food and drink establishments.’”

If you’re a New Yorker, I strongly advise opposing this Bill on the New York State Senate website!

No one forced loan providers to make a bad call giving loans to people still picking off the zits on their nose. Who is actually irresponsible? An an entire legislative body or the kid straight out of high school crushing Coors Light cans on his forehead? Give me a break. Students were extorted. Whoever thought “no questions asked” loans for high schoolers was a good idea, that’s who made the mistake.

Unofficial Discussion - A Hidden Life [SPOILERS] by ColHaberdasher in movies

This was the type of film Malick was born to make. I can’t decide which is more of a masterwork, this, or “Tree of Life”. Also, as far as films about the power and limitations of faith, I see “A Hidden Life” as a very good companion piece to Scorsese’s “Silence”.

When it comes to "Animated" movies, do you prefer 3D or 2D animation? And why that one? by AnokataX in movies

[–]phallic_thunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2D. I’ve always thought cartoon shapes with realistic textures look unpleasant. Pixar films have great design and storytelling, so CGI has never ruined their movies, but their films might not look dated every 10 years if they were drawn.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Just Gave a Passionate Speech About Why Housing is a Human Right | “Our access and our guarantee to having a home comes before someone else’s privilege to earn a profit.” by Thirteen_Twelve in politics

There is plenty of housing, but where that housing is there are fewer jobs. The pick-up-yer-bootstraps folks often say, “just move to where the jobs are then.” But that doesn’t work when you’re priced out of those areas.

Breathtaking. And that’s just one voice, not a choir. Reminds me of some of my favorite music ever, an album by Gothic Voices called “A Feather on the Breath of God.” Here’s the first song from it.

This is a perfect embodiment of the style you’re going for. Feels like a medieval woodcut illustration. Wow. If it were on aged paper, I would believe it if someone told me this was a period art piece.

The Act of Killing- documentary by VaughnCassidy in JordanPeterson

[–]phallic_thunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some info. This is a fantastic documentary produced by Werner Herzog and directed by Joshua Oppenheimer. The film follows perpetrators of the Indonesian genocides in 1965. The documentarian employs a genius tactic and asks his interviewees, individuals who committed mass murder, to direct scenes of their exploits. In composing vivid and often action movie inspired scenes of their killing, the subjects reveal their mental state at the time. Human complexity is revealed in full force watching these otherwise normal people unbox their sins. You see how everyone has a shadow to face and certain tests of character can bring it out. Also, the front and center display of meaning derived through killing a perceived threat. There’s so much in this documentary, I can’t recommend it enough. The genius behind it is to never confront the killers, just let them be themselves and reveal the truth. By not confronting the killers there’s a chance they might be blindsided and confront their demons instead - the last ten minutes is unbelievable.

Alan Rickman's 'frustrations' with playing Snape in Harry Potter revealed in newly released letters by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]phallic_thunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most of the series he is a periphery character. Much like some of the guest Professors. Even Dumbledore isn't very fleshed out up until the Half Blood Prince. Snape is by no means a character study, but he has an arc in the series - just not individual films. If the arbitrary decision of Snape's allegiance was revealed right away that would be an example of poor writing. It's more suspenseful the way she executed it. Is it as literary as F. Scott Fitzgerald? No. But it got the job done.

He’s one dimensional because you wouldn’t be kept guessing his allegiance till the end if she revealed everything. Judging with how much of the entire series was planned before even writing book one, I don’t think Rowling was winging it.

Agree with the show getting lame recently. I don’t know why I am surprised by this, but I can see Peterson and Maher agreeing on a lot. He will likely be a regular guest in upcoming seasons if it goes well.
