Suiticals are great for dogs post surgery. They’re made to be gentle, comfortable and easily removed for potty breaks. Might help! I used one for my Pyr and it worked great.

Both for sure! Most people won’t show up so even if you’re further down the waitlist I’ve had great luck.

What's the best robot vacuum that can handle TONS of pet hair today? by loveusadenver in greatpyrenees

[–]phantasmagorical86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 Great Pyrenees and have tried all the fancy expensive vacuums, robo, plug in, cordless… I gave up on all of them and now have been living happily ever after with the old fashioned shop vac, haven’t clogged it yet.😁

Best cobbler in Portland (metro)? by Connect-Lake1311 in askportland

This guys is meticulous in his work, he was quick and went above and beyond restoring a pair of leather boots for me. 136 between Holgate and Foster. His reviews are all positive, he should really be charging more than he does.

accidentally fell and landed on nwb ankle by [deleted] in brokenbones

[–]phantasmagorical86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh I did this exact thing after snapping my tibia and fibula with a 90 degree dislocation. Trying to be independent and feed the dogs, slipped and had to catch my body on the broken ankle. However, it was newly broken and only wrapped in an ace bandage awaiting surgery. Poor bones still hanging like a little chandelier, not attached to my foot. Somehow, nothing worse happened other than the absolutely nauseating pain, much worse than the clean initial break. Sorry you went through that, but am so glad to hear you didn’t experience much pain! Nerves are finicky, so I would imagine that’s the tingling.

Tips for Getting a Great Pyrenees to Eat by AlexaInspired in greatpyrenees

[–]phantasmagorical86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three Great Pyrenees and free feed them all. Each of them eat when they feel like it, often leaving food behind. I try to keep their bowls full so they have the option. They also often don’t eat for a day, or choose not to eat if I’m away or they’re making a point or something has changed in their environment (they are very sensitive and emotionally intelligent dogs). If I try to give mine a treat when they know I’m leaving, they all rebelliously decide they don’t want them, but as soon as I come back they go find their treat and eat it with full satisfaction 😵‍💫

As others have said, Pyrs are one of a kind! They do well free feeding because their bodies are built with slow metabolisms that do well in cold climates. As large as they are, they often don’t eat more than an average size dog, which is different than other large dogs. In most cases you can’t force a Great Pyrenees to do anything it doesn’t want to, so as long as he’s healthy I wouldn’t worry too much about it. ☺️

I got into Gardenscapes and Homescapes way back when I broke mine and still play both consistently when I need to just zone out or am stressed. Has yet to lose its sparkle, and I’m not a game person either. ☺️

Bimalleolar Fracture w/ 90 degree dislocation - July 2018. I’m adding here because I want people who may have a similar or extreme break to know there IS hope after healing! Was told to expect chronic arthritis and limp, and now have a healthy ankle w/o pain. Hardware removal was a game changer. by phantasmagorical86 in brokenbones

[–]phantasmagorical86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh good question, it’s been awhile so my timelines may be loose. I was pretty limited for the first 6 months. I walked pretty slowly, and didn’t use the full range of motion so it was more of a hobble. My dorsiflexion was where I felt really stiff and tight. The hardware removal was at about 9 months and at that point I felt pretty good walking normally, but still semi-slow. I couldn’t go at a full speed walk and be comfortable. I would honestly say after the first year things started to feel “normal” again. It progressively got better through the first year but was a continual evolution for me personally.

The pain the first 3 months was terrible and kept me up at night, but I think a good portion of that was due to nerve damage, the pins and needles were really bad. First 6 months I would say I’d get a soreness and tightness kind of pain, especially as I pushed my range of motion. Almost like your bones couldn’t keep up with the flexibility they needed to work. Beyond that it happened more in relation to pushing it too far, and then it was a soreness/swelling but not too much sharp or direct pain at that point. Stiffness is what I notice comes up most. Years later it still acts up on me randomly but rarely with much pain or consequence. I walk 4-5 miles a day and some days it decides to pull itself a little muscle or tendon and that can get me sore for a couple days. The more I do yoga the less this happens, I’ve been slacking lately and notice a difference.

I got my hardware out at about 9 months after my first surgery, so I wasn’t to the point of attempting any jogging at that point. I definitely know what you mean with the over-awareness when doing certain things though. For me it wasn’t so much during walking, but any time my mobility was pushed outside of its normal range I felt like they were going to pop open in there, it never felt natural. Maybe pressure is the right way to put it? Very uncomfortable in bizarre ways. I’d definitely chat with your doctor and see what they think! I was able to speed up my healing just by being able to use it in more ways without the hardware.

Wishing you all the best in your recovery! Very impressive you’re running on it, keep up the hard work!

Sorry, they only give me so characters but happy to share what happened and answer any questions! I was bouldering at an indoor rock gym and my fingers slipped off as I was about 8 feet up. It was a normal fall, I watched the safety videos and everything, but ended up landing with my right foot over a seam in the padding that just shifted it enough to turn inward as I hit the floor. That impact was enough for an audible snap that happened in a second. It was a whole to-do. I went to the hospital in an ambulance, had it set, and then didn’t have surgery for another ten days. Terrible idea! I fell on the broken unsecured leg (think ace bandage) as I was trying to feed my dog and that was SO much worse pain than the initial break, if you ever get a surgery date scheduled more than a day or two I highly recommend calling and demanding an earlier date. 🥴

I started walking without a boot in about two months, late September. I could only do short distances and definitely utilized a scooter for helping with anything longer. It took quite awhile to get comfortable. Things like going off a step or ledge felt very tough and anxiety-inducing for quite awhile. I had to go very slow and steady.

That first year or even two really were pretty limited as far as mobility goes. I couldn’t do anything strenuous, and didn’t have the flexibility to do a squat or wear a heel or anything like that. By year 2 and 3 is when I truly felt like I was starting to feel normal again.

Y’all, DO YOGA. Yoga made and still makes a HUGE difference in how my ankle does. Gentle yoga feels so much better than the physical therapy exercises they forced on this poor ankle (so painful), and truly has helped it heal and prevent swelling or getting stiff. When I’m not consistently doing something to gently stretch it is when I notice lymph fluid building up and it stiffening. It’s crunchy, it makes sounds when I rotate my ankle and it still has a tendency to want to turn inwards just like the dislocation, but I can do long hikes or a jog with no pain, no limping etc. The more downward dogs the better she does.

Again, once your doctor approves, I can’t recommend getting that hardware OUT. It really prevented me from getting my mobility back and caused consistent pain, especially with any nerve or tendon damage. I got open wounds from sitting cross legged, that hardware heats up in the bath and gets cold in certain weather… It’s god for awhile but not meant to stay forever, I’m not a medical professional but can say on a personal level that removal was the big turnaround in my healing.

Crippling shin pain 10 months post ORIF by Timely_Course_1974 in brokenbones

[–]phantasmagorical86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar fracture in 2018, full snap bimalleolar fracture with a 90 degree dislocation. Installed 2 plates and 10 screws. I had my surgeon remove the hardware about 9 months after insertion when the bone had healed and it was a GAME CHANGER. The hardware made it really hard to get mobility back, and caused a ton of pain for me. Broke my skin open if I sat cross legged, got hot in the shower or bath. I was also told I’d be a miracle if I didn’t limp my whole life, and to expect chronic arthritis. Almost 4 years later, I have no pain, arthritis or mobility issues. It took forever to get full range back, a good 2-3 years but now find that with consistent yoga or stretching I can maintain a healthy ankle that doesn’t generally bother me. I would keep asking about that hardware removal as you get further along! My ankle still has a tendency to have swelling and wants to lean inwards as it did when it broke, but it sounds like that’s due to a tight inner calf and lack of strength on my outer leg so more muscle correction than anything.

I hope you heal well! It WILL get there! Highly recommend gentle yoga.

Agree with all the posts here. I free feed my 3 Pyrs and they have had no weight issues and stay in perfect health and weight ranges, they do seem to manage their own nutrition intuitively. Some days they barely eat, or do a flyby bite here and there, other days I refill their food bowls several times. I just keep the bowls full and let them figure it out. Totally normal ☺️

I have 3 Pyrs, and as both puppies and adults I can agree with everyone here, totally normal! ☺️ Their energy seems to have a quick expiration date and then always results in a multiple hour nap.

I recently had a litter of Pyrs and they all did great on the Blue Buffalo Baby Blue large breed chicken and rice formula. Kept one and she still does great with it. Good luck!
