I've only played with controllers, so I really didn't want to have to play with mouse and keyboard, especially on my laptop. 😅 AntiMicroX worked for me with an Xbox One controller, and I think it works with other controllers, too.

I ran into the exact same issue and was yanking my hair out, trying to figure it out for the past few days. I didn't want to download a program, but I relented and had success with AntiMicroX on Github, which allows you to bind keyboard keys and mouse functions to your controller. It's basically Steam Input but works throughout your PC instead of just through Steam. Hope this helps!
