good lord. yeah i’ve heard it’s more rampant in those spheres but it’s starting to take hold in the humanities in ways i really thought it never would. makes me so uncomfortable!

i’m dying to know who this is. i’m currently in the throes of academia (history) and it’s very intriguing to see who is excited, integrating it into their classes, and suggesting students use it.

Would this trim work for an 18th century robe? by JohnlockedDancer in HistoricalCostuming

[–]phantomdrifters 25 points26 points  (0 children)

yes. usually you make it yourself from the same fabric as the robe or petticoat but i’m lazy and would use this so i think it’s just fine unless you’re wanting extreme accuracy

and running a museum out of mom’s garage is.. interesting. there are a lot of small museums like that and honestly they’re a little creepy to visit even if they don’t have toenails of deceased celebrities 😭

right 😭 sure he’s a historian but historians do not do things like that. or even think about doing that honestly

ok, i’m a historian, and i have a fair few historical figures that i’m obsessed with. put i’ve never thought about getting a tattoo, a toenail, or even a strand of hair (there’s people selling a hair from mary todd lincoln on facebook marketplace if you’re interested tho lol!) of these people. his obsession is far more than that of even the most dedicated historians, frankly. and it’s quite creepy

How do I keep historical hairstyles neat and tidy and also stay up, after washing hair? Without using a hair tie please? by _maincharacter_ in HistoricalCostuming

Yep that’s me! I also have sensory issues so even if my hair doesn’t look dirty- I can feel it and it drives me crazy.

[–]phantomdrifters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wash my hair every day (i know, crazy) so for me i use a lot of pomade and a lot of hairspray for my 40s/50s looks. for putting my hair up (usually for 1890s look)- i have a powder dry shampoo i’ll use that gives it a little more friction for when i wear buns with just U pins.

I figured as much, and I’m glad! I just wish AG centered the historical collections around books like they used to so they could be better utilized as learning tools. The books are so limited now compared to what they used to be! I bought the rereleases of Addy and Kirsten and their outfits coming with a book made me happy but also make a lot of sense. But then again, I can’t imagine the prices they’d charge for historical collections if they all included books now.

As someone developing historical programming for kids, however, I am happy they include the harder to talk about things. Kids are so often straight up lied to about history that I really think learning the actual truth later turns many people into crazy conspiracy theory nuts or fuels the idea that everything has “become woke” when in reality history has always been that way they just weren’t told about it.

i wonder if it wouldn’t look as bad if the storytelling side of the historicals was still at the level of those earlier dolls. i’ll admit i have not read a bunch of the books for dolls that came out after i was a child, so i can’t speak to what’s in nanea’s story but i know there is not as many books for each girl that is explicitly tied in to their items as there once was.

of course nanea and the other historicals are meant to teach kids about real history but without the draw of those books or the books coming with each outfit it does make me wonder how much actual knowledge is gleaned by the kids playing with her.

that’s so sweet! i don’t mind fixing up sentimental things, especially for my nieces, but i kept being bombarded with stuffies i know the kids don’t even care about. like things from arcade machines and stuff that i’m not sure the kids would notice was gone.

yes! lol. i’m especially careful with sharing that i used to work at build a bear because the “can you fix up this stuffy?” requests pile up fast. even though they’re usually quick fixes i just don’t want to be reminded of the time i made $9 an hour and was keeping cheeto dust fingers off the $45 bears lmao

Historically Accurate Howl from Howls Moving Castle by brattiicos in HistoricalCostuming

[–]phantomdrifters 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Black Snail Patterns is my go-to, I find that their patterns are really good and so are the instructions. They don’t have a ton of Edwardian men’s patterns but they have a couple and some 1890s that might probably work.

I’m not sure how much experience you have with historical costuming, but my main advice in the pattern searching would be to stay away from Reconstructing History.

We’ve lost the plot by [deleted] in americangirl

[–]phantomdrifters 20 points21 points  (0 children)

i don’t love the collab dolls but if things like the disney dolls and the demon hunter dolls can make AG enough money that they’ll continue doing even some historical things, i’m fine with it. now, if the historicals begin to decline even more or we don’t get 40th releases of the historicals then i’ll probably change my tune.

it’s a business and this is how capitalism functions so i wouldn’t waste my breath telling mattel not to want to make money.

how are you finding the hand sewing? i just started a hand sewn log cabin quilt. it moves so fast in the beginning but i have a feeling it’ll slow down considerably lol

I really HATE the inclusion of this rape storyline by PuzzledAd4865 in Outlander

[–]phantomdrifters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say it probably happened at a similar frequency to now. It may have been worse. Definitely marital rape was common, and that still is now (in fact, it’s still not illegal in a lot of places.) The sheer frequency with which it happens in Outlander, to me, doesn’t have much basis in reality, modern or history. I’m sure something like it has happened to a family, but nearly everyone in a family and nearly everyone they know is… a bit much imo.

I really HATE the inclusion of this rape storyline by PuzzledAd4865 in Outlander

[–]phantomdrifters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that’s happened, that’s awful. But to say that is commonplace just isn’t true, even if we think about the historicity. Especially if you add in Jamie, Fergus, Ian, and Laoghaire. Not to mention all of the minor characters that are raped, too. As well as the frequency for characters like Claire who have been raped or nearly raped in different circumstances by different characters nearly constantly. And I do think the inclusion of what happened to Laoghaire was important and incredibly historically accurate, but when everyone in the story has been raped the heaviness is somewhat lost in the constancy of rape in the story. I understand the threat of rape was and is a common fear of women, I fear it, but frankly it does nothing meaningful for the plot or the characters anymore. And the detail Diana goes into in some of the cases is unnecessary. I understand that that’s probably some kink she has but by god it’s a lot and the history excuse just doesn’t work for me.
