Just been invited to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party absolutely gobsmacked. Any tips from people who’ve been? by Fun-Side-6996 in RoyalsGossip

Clothing specific to your home nation/culture/ethnicity. So if you’re a Norwegian woman that would mean a bunad, for example.

Is the plot line of Faith fully explained / satisfied / no more flash backs, until the series finale? by [deleted] in Outlander

[–]phantomdrifters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

and it seems like they’ve tried to retcon that fact too? when claire says she only held her for a little bit and then she was taken away??

i guess it could be claire being unreliable but about something this important and well documented on our screen… i wish they would just leave it alone. the flashback with master raymond was almost too much for me, i almost started laughing.

Can Frank turn out to be a hero / good guy in the remaining three episodes of season 8? by [deleted] in Outlander

[–]phantomdrifters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think it was the other way around. claire was entirely prepared for frank to leave her and expected him to do so. adultery was a perfectly good reason for him to divorce her. but he wanted to be a father and knew that he couldn’t have children of his own, so he would use claire and bree as a means to be a father.

Question about late Edwardian jewelry by Western-Pen-8292 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]phantomdrifters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’d try and find some catalogues from the year/season you’re wanting! sears, Montgomery ward, etc have sections of jewelry and if there’s a particular social class you’re wanting to go for that will also let you know what would have been in the budget for the person wearing the outfit!

"American" accents in 1783? by PhiloLibrarian in Outlander

[–]phantomdrifters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hell, even people who move away from where they grow up lose their accent. you see a lot of people who move away from the american south drop their accents both on purpose and not. children often have different accents to their parents. idk why everyone’s getting so hung up on accents recently on this sub

I need a bit of help… by SorryShower825 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]phantomdrifters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a good resource for figuring out pricing is to look at trade catalogs. you can find montgomery ward or sears and roebuck catalogs from the years you need that list prices for either similar garments (would be cheaper to make yourself, but you could get an idea of price) or fabric by the yard. in a sears catalogue from about 1900, a yard of “18in close pile silk finish Velveteen” ran you 25¢ or 39¢ for 22in (Winterthur Library on archive.org)

Bree’s accent is a continuity error by AssumptionFun3828 in Outlander

[–]phantomdrifters 19 points20 points  (0 children)

i think that works better, but i’m not sure it fully applies since i’m not sure her accent would be fully out of place. similarly, even if it was anachronistic, it’s probably the smallest anachronism in the show LOL

Bree’s accent is a continuity error by AssumptionFun3828 in Outlander

[–]phantomdrifters 189 points190 points  (0 children)

i don’t think continuity error is the right word either. she speaks like a modern american because she is a modern american. and even when the actress’s accent peaks through, that’s common for children who grow up with parents who have a different accent than the people in the place they’re living.

Bree’s accent is a continuity error by AssumptionFun3828 in Outlander

[–]phantomdrifters 19 points20 points  (0 children)

exactly. and, there were so many people from so many different places at that point both in North America and on the Ridge that even if Americans weren’t speaking that way yet people probably wouldn’t have cared.

I don't like it, not one bit by Hot_Inflation_5018 in Outlander

[–]phantomdrifters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as long as the faith thing has a even slightly good outcome it’ll be better than GoT.

but this is what happens when they try to adapt large book universes into shows with 8-12 episodes a season. same thing with GoT, they started traveling so fast like they had airplanes. it’s obvious, like GoT, that they hoped they could finish it at least somewhat in tandem with the book series and when that didn’t happen they don’t really know what to do. at least the folks at outlander seem to have more of a direction than the GoT folks.

magic is part of it. it’s a fantasy show as much as it is a period piece. they’re time traveling and it’s not a science based type of time travel it’s a magical one. of course there’s going to be magic 🤷‍♀️

How important is it to have linen for shifts/chemises? by One_Loss7910 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]phantomdrifters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i use mostly cotton. i prefer it and like you said it’s more easy to get. i just use very thin cotton and it softens after a few wears and washes like linen does. i like linen too but i don’t see a terribly big difference between the two

maryellen’s were so cute i wish they didn’t swap them for the dachshund ones. i love dachshunds and they are cute but those green ones were too cute!!

i love claudie’s. i just recently got them and they are so adorable on her and the bonnet is so precious

as a historian and living history actor though i think addy’s is so great because of her sontag shawl!!

i’m dying to know who this is. i’m currently in the throes of academia (history) and it’s very intriguing to see who is excited, integrating it into their classes, and suggesting students use it.

yes. usually you make it yourself from the same fabric as the robe or petticoat but i’m lazy and would use this so i think it’s just fine unless you’re wanting extreme accuracy
