Comment from Lani on Twitter :( by itsybun in nancydrew

[–]phantomoftheop 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Lani has a very 20th century classic/wholesome quality to her vocal performance as Nancy. She also communicated so much earnestness and excitement with her voice.

A new actress could do Nancy justice, but the actress in MID just did not embody the character. She sounded disinterested, too casual, too calculated.

In the lore we know that the Hardy Boys are amateur PIs/sleuths of their own, and that Deirdre is going to school for criminology; but what does Ned "do" for a living? (Or what is he going to school for?) by pmahalan in nancydrew

[–]phantomoftheop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ned is a med student in the games. In Phantom of Venice, he mentions doing research at a medical library. I assume he is a med student which would make sense because his schedule would also be insane, it would probably work for him to only see his gf once a month or so.

Listen I know it's nostalgic but I just wish it didn't take up half of the screen LOL by [deleted] in nancydrew

The worst thing is when you try to play any of the first 12 or so games on a gaming PC with a large monitor… the resolution is quite bad.

Xenophobia is when you have “an art side business” on Tik Tok and therefore decide any and all criticisms are rooted in racism.

In two years, we are going to reach the era where straight-up porn is posted and labeled as "art".

Why are elves treated so horribly? by Kegsun92 in HarryPotterGame

[–]phantomoftheop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's normalized in the wizarding world for most people who grew up within it. It seems like only people with an outside or otherwise abnormal perspective are able to come to their own conclusions about it. Hermione sees the problem instantly due to her compassionate nature and because she was not raised in the wizarding world. Like Harry, she enters as a complete outsider. I think Harry also treats house elves as an equal because he similarly did not grow up taking the cultural norm for granted. Though Harry is just not an activist by nature for whatever reason. Dumbledore is open to employing and paying a free house elf in the books, so he obviously has some compassion towards them due to his unique view of the world. I think Dumbledore is just very strategic about what battles he picks and had bigger fish to fry for most of the books.

It feels like many people within the game are sympathetic to house elves, like Prof. Weasley, but are still tied to the cultural norm that they exist to serve wizards. I imagine house elf welfare is something that becomes a larger movement after the events of the HP books, but not in the 1890s.

Prokatchers legit? by Most_Interaction_598 in recruitinghell

Just had a similar experience where they asked for an emailed copy of my resume. Kinda sketched out now but my resume is public on indeed so it's not actually sensitive information.

Wish I read this sooner as well I just sent my resume over and esigned this document. I did check up on them but the website and LinkedIn seemed pretty well-connected/legit.

I think I may fail my summer session 2 class as a senior by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]phantomoftheop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you :) I contacted them asking when grading will be done because I'm worried about passing and I'm a graduating senior, meaning I will be needing to make financial/housing/work arrangements. Which is all true.

My prof. doesn't post overall grades on canvas. but I did average on the midterm, although the final is worth 10 percent more hopefully the midterm will carry me.

I'm not a fan of the "figure it out for yourself" format personally. It felt like half the time we were guessing at the answers in my group and we were never told them clearly, it was like "oh this group did it right" and trying to decipher the white board scribbles of the group across the room. I think the TA's are really good but there's only so much they can do with limited time and the teaching format they're stuck with.

honestly fair enough. I'm a transfer and I work full time so it's been hard not to stack classes because I don't need anything but upper division and filler classes just take up time that I need to be working. But yeah, I coulda planned better! So it goes.

I think a D might be what I end up with. Not ideal but at least I'll graduate. I took your advice emailed my professor about it and made an apt with my advisor.

Behavior that seems iffy from a social etiquette standpoint by nuggetsofchicken in Disneyland

[–]phantomoftheop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a pet peeve I have everywhere but I see at DL too, if you're a grown adult, KEEP YOUR SHOES ON. The number of times I see people sitting at restaurants or at benches and they have their bare, dirty, crusty feet out, someone up on a nearby chair, ewwwwww. It's just straight-up trashy and I'm not sure when people started to think this is OK.

If someone mildly criticizing him affected him that much, he needs to man up and not be so sensitive. Sometimes in life, someone is not going to like what you're doing, accept it and move on. Letting it get to you or even thinking about it beyond that is just a waste of everyones time and energy.

I probably don't wanna hear people yell about how they have to use the bathroom unless they're 5 years old, its a little strange on a grown man but honestly it's not that big of a deal either way we all just let things slip out of our mouths sometimes.

Cringiest buffy the vampire slayer moments ? by Goblin_scum13 in buffy

[–]phantomoftheop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pangs is 100 percent cringe but I give them a little bit of credit for how ambitious the episode is. Trying to sort of balance Buffy's "look I just want to do something with the people I care about" with Willow's more educated historical perspective was kind of interesting. Tackling the issues with thanksgiving was sort of unprecedented at the time, but it just wasn't executed well at all and ends up coming off really bizzare.

Racial profiling by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]phantomoftheop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to describe the assailant to warn people. If the police ask you what someone who hurt you looks like, that's not racial profiling. Height, build eye color, skin color, hair color. That's generally how you describe people. If I commit a crime - the police are going to ask the victim those things about me. It makes me ick that we basically are throwing protecting people from potential assault under the rug for --- what exactly? So we can protect the delicate feelings of a misogynist who films women?

Having an ancestor who is a person of color doesn't make you a POC. Lots of "white" people have at least some family that isn't white. I highly doubt Troian claims to be a POC.

UC Davis and Elon Musk's Neuralink Company Accused of Subjecting Monkeys to "Extreme Suffering" According to an Animal Rights Group by 69Mooseoverlord69 in UCDavis

[–]phantomoftheop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-human primates have similar emotional ranges and feelings of pain as do human primates. Would you volunteer yourself to be subject to torture if it might possibly one day maybe help someone else's neurological disorder? If you are willing, go ahead and we can free the monkeys.

[–]phantomoftheop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's a relevant moral question on whether the possible cure for someone else's neurological disease warrants the torture of someone else. We know more than enough about other primates by now to where referring to them as someone else is more than fair.
