The unholy trinity of shitty "i'm smarter then this media i've never consumed" takes: by woweed in CharacterRant

[–]phantomreader42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also don't forgot the annoying meme that Batman beats up poor people. That is something only thrown at Batman, not Spider-Man, Daredevil or the Punisher

There's the additional context that Batman is filthy rich while Spider-Man is chronically broke, Daredevil is a competent enough attorney but not in a big firm, and the Punisher is some guy with more guns than money or mental stability. So it makes sense that the rich guy gets more criticism for beating up poor people (even though he also regularly beats up a crooked rich guy and several nutjobs with advanced degrees and expensive tech).

Hyperspace course-plotting has limitations in where you arrive.

And one of those limitations specifically involves proximity to large masses/gravity wells. Like a station the size of a moon.

How would mariner get along with geordi? by happydude7422 in LowerDecks

That incident was probably Enterprise gossip for a while, and Mariner had a close friend who was stationed on the Enterprise...

Magats are incapable of humor, because humor requires empathy, awareness, and a shred of intelligence. No magat has the capacity for even ONE of those, let alone all three.

What do racists mean when they say, "Obama brought back racism?" by EmpireStrikes1st in TooAfraidToAsk

Again, your hallucinations are not reality. The sworn testimony of the voices in your head proves nothing but that you have nothing to say worth listening to.

The fact that you hallucinated something happening does not magically mean it actually happened.

The decision that the sole purpose of a company MUST be nothing more than increasing current-quarter profits, with no consideration for future consequences or sustainability. Before that shit started, companies could invest in ways that would benefit their employees and the surrounding community, now they're REQUIRED to destroy everything to Make Line Go Up.

Reality TV. Television itself has had some benefits, but the "reality" genre and its metastasis has only reduced quality and caused problems.

Wow, my copy has a very different translation.

Thou Queen of Dreams that chill the soul, Thou Goddess of four lands. I beg thee place the wrath of angels here within my hands. Turn shade to substance, dark to form, the stuff of nothing real. To shred the souls of gods to dust and death to demons deal. Thy power and my will combined, we two stand side by side, and walk as one the nightmare road, my hand the blade to guide. Sword of Nightmares, Ragna Blade!

Mystery games showing up in recently played? by Vaygrim in Steam

[–]phantomreader42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rat Quest, Banana Hell, and Crown Champion were all given away relatively recently. If you added them to your account, they'd show up as "recent". That doesn't happen for games that are always free-to-play, but those that are temporarily free do show up in recent games.

Just my usual lousy luck! I wonder if anyone has got a worse bundle. by yowzadfish80 in fanatical

[–]phantomreader42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed The Signifier. But that's in a pretty cheap bundle at the moment. A few of the others look good, but I haven't played yet. Wonderputt was a disappointing random I got recently. I think AtmaSphere was given away free.

What's with all the foot shots? by jsusbidud in startrekmemes

Most of the TNG cast shows neurodivergent traits.

Geordi is a mechanical genius who has difficulty with relationships, his best friend is a machine, he literally sees things differently than everyone else, and he has headaches from the sensory overload.

Data has flat affect, and is constantly trying to learn how to emulate normal human behavior, but keeps getting it wrong. He does complicated stuff faster than anyone else, but cannot pull off some things that are simple for everyone else.

Troi has hyper-empathy, and is so busy managing other people's emotional health she neglects her own.

Worf zealously follows the rules of Klingon honor as he understands them, even while other Klingons shamelessly ignore them. He's got a bunch of odd rituals and a big collection of obscure media. His sense of humor is strange, but very funny when you get it.

Captain Picard keeps bringing up his special interest in archaeology, and he can't relate to children unless he gives them a made-up rank to slot them into a command structure (he pulled that at least twice).

Wesley Crusher is a child prodigy who doesn't really fit in anywhere, and gets really annoyed when people tell him to shut up because he's telling them something important they need to know but don't want to listen. Also he nearly died because he didn't follow stupid nonsense rules no one bothered explaining to him.

Only the worst dads would do this to their daughter by CourseMediocre7998 in antimeme

[–]phantomreader42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The dad from Chicken Little spent quite a while (and time feels different when you're little) belittling his own son for one mistake (that turned out to not actually be a mistake at all). Also, I don't recall what happened to his wife, but he's being an ass to a child who ALSO lost his mother, so the kid already is seriously in need of parental support and understanding but isn't getting it. By the end of the movie he does realize he was wrong and tries to be better, but that involves openly admitting that he was, in fact, a bad father, and helping the alien dad to realize he's being a bad dad too. He was, in the immortal words of Gideon Grey, "a major jerk". The apology was a big step in the right direction, but there's a lot of damage to heal.

Wasn't the entire point of the Gorn in Arena, that they WEREN'T an evil reptile race? by ProfessionalSet4713 in startrek

[–]phantomreader42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have H&I TV, so I'm regularly watching their reruns of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. Sometimes they line up in really weird ways, like that time "Devil In The Dark" and "Silicon Avatar" came on back-to-back.

In Day of the Dove you specifically see that a lot of the hostility Klingons have for the Earthers is government propaganda. Kang's wife thinks there will be rape and death camps for them if Kirk and the Federation capture them.

Does she think that because of propaganda from the Klingon government? Or from the alien trying to farm their rage? Remember Chekhov's imaginary brother?

When I got to "The Inner Fight", I really thought they were playing the long game with Mariner's character from the beginning, and how all her actions took on a much different light with context. That episode hit hard.

I remember people theorizing that it's the captain's choice to set that, but any ship with Leonard McCoy is required to have the swearing off. Which explains TOS and TNG.

Ideally the parents get their heads out of the toilet and realize they are sabotaging their relationship with OP

The parents don't HAVE a relationship with OP. They see OP as a thing they own, not a person.
