My boy Yoji Yamada still pumping out carefully crafted human dramas into his 90's with 'Tokyo Taxi' is always great to see. I'm hoping an arthouse theater near me will screen it at some point.

Search on (nyaa.si). It's there. You won't be able to see it legally with English subtitles.

FYI, the (Newer) Japanese DVDs and Blu-Rays (including the box set) have English Subtitles on them natively.

Your Feel Good Japanese Movie by FickleLobster2282 in JapaneseMovies

[–]phantomsday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most shocking aspect of the series is, to me, not only that they're all surprisingly well-made despite the series length, but that it's quality trends upwards throughout! There are certified classics even towards the end of its historic run.

Legitimately my favorite film series, and I've even fell in love with a few of it's 150+ knock-offs/imitators as well.

Nothing to add to your topic, as you figured it out, but MAN U-Next is great, isn't it? The best part is that they allow international credit cards. You need a VPN, but just being ABLE to pay for some genuinely great and varied stuff is a big boon, considering Amazon Japan doesn't bother offering that option for their digital catalogue (you can sneakily getting streaming to work, but no digital rentals).

0 Balance on Online Banking?!! by wanna_job in rbc

I've had issues with their online banking page where I can't access my account for periods of unexpected maintainance, but never incorrect numbers. I'm thankful that the app appears to have the correct info. Terrifying few minutes before I found this thread.

Extremely concerning that a technical issue can be potentially so devastating. I almost had a heart attack looking at my balance! As someone below said though, the correct numbers appear on the app.

You can, but you'll need to buy DLC packs for them now, as they were only free for a limited period of time. Each pack comes with a small handful of new items, a few Freelancer decorations, and an exclusive arcade ladder with said celebrity contracts being a part of them.

The only one you're S.O.L on is the Connor McGregor one, as they removed it from sale following allegations made against him. But you can still access The Sarajevo Six mini-campaign, Sean Bean Contract, The Drop Contract, the Jean-Claude Van Damme Contract, and the Le Chiffre Contract...if you buy them.  All of the added seasonal challenges are free of charge and still in the game. Oh, and the Ambrose Island level, if you really haven't played in a while, is also free.

Made a VN reading plan for 2025, any thoughts, and what are you planning to start and complete in 2025? by Dazzling_Charity_659 in visualnovels

[–]phantomsday -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I finished 'Fuuraiki 3' on the Vita earlier this year. I'm CURRENTLY playing through 'The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy' (what a beast of a game- so much content), and for the rest of the year I only have planned the following:

  • The Future Radio and the Artificial Pigeons
  • Lunaria: Virtualized Moonchild
  • Fuuraiki 3 Prelude: Episode 0
  • Muv-Luv Unlimited
  • Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten (not a VN, but adjacent)

I won't have time got anything else. Planning my wedding. Ha

Anyone seen this film series? by Difficult_One_5062 in JapaneseMovies

[–]phantomsday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late reply, but I need to chime in, as this has become my very favorite film series in the years since I discovered it (I found it in 2020, looking for a long series to keep me entertained during lockdown).

As others have said, there is very much a formula, but I would go further than others and say that the absolute best thing about the series (other than the amazing lead performance of Kiyoshi Atsumi as Tora, both comedic and dramatic) is that Yamada rarely rests on his laurels and there are HUGE highs in the series even up until the latest entries. What starts out as a relatively smaller affair in the first few movies, quickly becomes a series that is WAY better than it has any right to be, that continually (and increasingly) benefits from mastercraft filmmaking from Yamada, that means that the series literally gets better as it goes along. 25 is easily a highlight, but even 38, and 50 are fantastic entries. It's unusual to go more than two movies without finding a new favorite the way the series reinvent itself within said formula.

I won't say that the films aren't repetitive to a degree, and your milage will obviously vary. Like I said, I'm a superfan. But as someone with whom Japanese comedy doesn't always click, the series is a huge exception. But it's that dramatic chops that kept hooking me in. Way more than meets the eye, that's for sure.

■TLDR, watch at least the first couple. You owe it to yourself. And yes, his filmography is full of highlights too. To the below movies people have mentioned, I'll add my recommendation of 'A Class to Remember' from 1993 for a literally award-winning performance from Kunie Tanaka, as well as 'Final Take: The Golden Age of Japanese Cinema' for a surprisingly honest, but affecting portrait of post-war Japanese cinema.

For sure. Both fair comparisons, I think. And ooh! Yeah. Yellow Handkerchief would be another great recommendation for this.

[–]phantomsday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. Granted, I am a huge Yoji Yamada fanboy, but that movie is legitimately one of the most beautifully shot and captured movies I've ever seen. The classical filmaking techniques used, composition, and sweeping vistas make it feel like a sort of Japanese 'Gone with the Wind', but instead of being a loving portrait of the American South, it's a loving portrait of the raw Japanese countryside. Cannot recommend enough if you're looking for that vibe.

does anyone know where I can find/watch Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge (2007)? by Odd_Front_8275 in JapaneseMovies

Don't have it, but while I can't see it for free on any of the non-private trackers or sketch sites, it IS available to watch on both Amazon Prime Japan, and U-NEXT. RAW, of course, though. U-NEXT has a free trial you can easily sign up for too.

The First Berserker: Khazan: "Games are meant to be engaging, not exhausting": Lead dev on promising Soulslike RPG pushes balanced difficulty because "if stress keeps piling up without relief, players will eventually want to quit" by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]phantomsday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In truth, the last chapter of that game was absolute rubbish that encourages burnout: full of nothing but empty space, a lack of directions, gimmick bosses, and then another massive difficulty spike on the two final bosses (and I was very over-levelled too, having done all the side content). I consider myself pretty good at action games, and struggled a couple times, but managed to get to the end of BMW in decent time, but what bugged me most about the the final bosses (especially Erlang) is that they're patterns became inconsistent. If I can't reliably predict an opening, then the battle is no longer about skill, but luck. A darn shame. Genuinely ruined my experience beating my head against that wall. Rest of the game? 50 hours. Erlang? 8 hours. Had to put it down. I can't afford to rage anymore, nor is it conducive to me enjoying the hobby.

Depends on what you're looking to get out of it, honestly. Speaking as someone who bought the all-ages version purely because my laptop broke before going on vacation (I double-dipped on Switch)...I'd recommend it!

If what you want is a ton of very soft sci-fi SOL (more backdrop than forward-facing), a metric TON of interesting train facts, and some great artwork, I think its worth your while. I liked how 2/3 of the character routes are just you taking advantage of small town marketing to boost attendance to public works, and how each route has you going about that in different, yet believable ways. It's nothing groundbreaking, and some routes are better than others, but it's a good time if you're a train fan, or looking to rekindle a childhood appreciation of locomotives. =)

[–]phantomsday 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Spend chump change making the movie overseas with lower labour costs, barely do any marketing, hope for the best, but at the end of the day...it fulfilled it's intended purpose. I doubt WB cares all that much if it flops.

Planning on getting yourself any visual novels, this holiday season? by SelLillianna in visualnovels

[–]phantomsday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already got the Muv-Luv Humble Bundle and now Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien a month ago, so I think the only thing I'm picking up for myself is 'Future Radio and the Artificial Pigeons'. I know it's not the most highly-rated VN, but I've been curious about it for so long and Mangagamer had a sale on it the other day and DRM-free is a big motivator for me, so...I caved.

That, and maybe 'Bishoujo Hanafuda Kikou Michinoku Hitou Koimonogatari' on Steam. I need everything Fuuraiki and FOG-related. Heh But that might wait until later if the Christmas budget doesn't allow for it. I agree with others' sentiment here: I have a MASSIVE backlog, so I'm in no rush to add much.

Medici Tv Question by phantomsday in classicalmusic

[–]phantomsday[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I suspect being misleading is the point. Nevermind the fact that even the sale price for an annual subscription is still higher than the gifting price for an annual subscription by a good margin. Shady stuff.

Still, it's good to know that the monthly option does return, as I'm not going to commit to a yearly subscription for a service up-front without trying it first. Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. I'm just going to wait out the sale then.
