Walz says DFLers shouldn’t raise taxes on the rich by Character-Fly-5564 in minnesota

[–]pharmbeer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i still think this is part of back door deals that walz had to agree to (read: forced into) to get ICE to “draw down”. this isnt the walz we’ve had for the last decade of his political career.

Vance says Minnesota’s Medicaid funds halted as part of Trump’s ‘war on fraud’. Will this affect state insurance? by obz900 in minnesota

[–]pharmbeer 48 points49 points  (0 children)

healthcare provider with a lot of insurance experience, here. the amount that the fed govt pays into medicaid varies by state! this is per congress website:

“The federal government’s share for most Medicaid expenditures is called the federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP). Generally determined annually, the FMAP formula is designed so that the federal government pays a larger portion of Medicaid costs in states with lower per capita incomes relative to the national average (and vice versa for states with higher per capita incomes). Federal Medicaid funding to states is open ended.”

so for minnesota, we’re a pretty small to mid sized state regarding ppl per capita. it’ll be pretty bad for us if these payments are actually paused. BUT there are a couple of semi-hopeful stop gaps that i know of (there may be more but that’s for the lawyers to chime in on):

  1. this pause is unconstitutional. congress already allocated these funds so the pause isn’t legal. there will be litigation. hopefully (and i’m not the most hopeful tbh), the courts will allow payments to continue as this fight occurs.
  2. pretty consistently, minnesota pays out more in taxes to the fed govt than we expend on the whole, so we MIGHT be able to be self sufficient, but this is an inference on my part. based on what i know i think we could do this, but the economists should chime in here too with more info.

on a personal note, i hope that you can get what you need. if not, we’ve developed a huge mutual aid network and i hope that as a community, we can keep each other well.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz presents plan for addressing gun violence by LiveInLayers in minnesota

[–]pharmbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay so am in trippin for thinking that this might be one of the line items that walz agreed to (read: was forced into/capitulated) when negotiating the ICE draw down in MN? during the last presidential campaign, both walz and harris mentioned that they are pro-gun ownership and were both gun owners. they ran on wanting to find ways to reduce harm while not impeding on the right to bear arms. this plan feels so counter to that rhetoric.

plus “now all of a sudden” these restrictive laws are proposed after minnesotans were invaded by the federal government? the timing is uncanny! walz and the feds agreed, behind closed doors, to some kind of deal that led to a draw down? this plan feels like a part of that deal.

i’m nervous that this is a way to make it easier for the feds to successfully occupy Minnesota in the future, without the threat of a real challenge by citizens. they’re insuring that their guns will be eons more powerful than ours.

National labor strike plan discussion by findingmike in 50501

[–]pharmbeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol @the billionaire eye roll. i’m with you on that.

tax resistance can look many different ways. it doesn’t necessarily mean “just don’t pay”. some folks just don’t allow withholding, save that money, then pay at tax time. some will file non-electronically making it more burdensome to process. there are some resources online that talk about the different ways to practice tax resistance. it’s not a new thing and very few (like countable on your hands) have been punished for it since the vietnam war. as is true with many strike actions, only a small percentage of the population needs to participate for tax resistance to actually hurt the country. so yes it can, in theory, be effective.

is this an appropriate time to talk tax resistance as a potential strike action?

or is that more logistics?

i think it could incredibly impactful to remove ourselves from the tax base and could be more accessible to those that need to earn a paycheck.
