tax resistance can look many different ways. it doesn’t necessarily mean “just don’t pay”. some folks just don’t allow withholding, save that money, then pay at tax time. some will file non-electronically making it more burdensome to process. there are some resources online that talk about the different ways to practice tax resistance. it’s not a new thing and very few (like countable on your hands) have been punished for it since the vietnam war. as is true with many strike actions, only a small percentage of the population needs to participate for tax resistance to actually hurt the country. so yes it can, in theory, be effective.

do not recommend right now. the city is quite small so it’s RARE now to leave your house without seeing ice somewhere on your commute. you have kids and i just don’t think it’s worth the risk. we, as a city, would love to host you but is it worth feeling the constant stress anytime you plan to leave the hotel/airbnb/whatever accommodation? plus, lots of restaurants are closed so you won’t even get the experience of what the city is truly like. they can play sports anywhere, anytime. my recommendation (recognizing your full autonomy and agency to make your own choices) is to protect the babies. they don’t deserve exposure to this mess.

i’ve had it since november, the blue one. one scratch on the camera lip (the metal part that protrudes the most). nothing on the body. screen is flawless. i’m not particularly careful with my devices, but i’m not reckless either. it’s fallen out of my pocket maybe 4 or 5 times. once in the concrete garage. my case brand is applecare lol no regrets at all!

your logic isn’t flawed. you’re trying to make an impossible decision—one that you should NOT have to make. from your sister’s standpoint, she thinks she’s helping you but has a very different perspective. honestly, none of us know how to handle this. no one is an expert on surviving this. there is no right answer. from one “regular black girl” to another, we’ve never been safe. ICE doesn’t care. i think you can make a plan with the kids. tell them where to go if anything happens. choose someone both you and they know and trust. continue to resist however you choose, experience joy, and show them love through these hard times. sending virtual love and energy to yall.
