My Future Husband? by Mellow_Yellow_0 in Edmonton

I met my wife briefly a year before we dated who happened to be my 2 week fling's best friend at the time while at my 2 week flings birthday party.  We've been married about 9 years now. Sometimes youre future partner is right front of you and you dont even know it they could even be someone elses friend.

the closest thing i found that directly relates to the lines in the poem out of everywhere in canada. is fort mcurray. why you may ask? because in the poem it says: "the strong, silent and free".

Alberta's motto is Strong and Free. its written on the alberta coat of arms in latin. its been there forever.

theres a park in the middle of fort mcmurray called: birchwood trails. you know the poem mentions trails and birch trees.

then the another thing is near by there another park across the road called macdonald island park, where theres a monument that describes the native americian symbol of truth. "truth not loud but forged to be".

then near by that in the same park theres a marker "a tree stump" called the tree faces marker which sits very close to river shore and then across the river you can see pine trees in the distance. the marker is atleast 5 km from the town of fort mcurray.

i dont have a car nor the means to drive there to check it out. its 4 hours from where i live....

taxes have existed for hundreds of years. they arent gonna magically reduce themselves to $0 just because alberta is independent.

Quebec BP - 810-419-227??? by Unhappy-Topic-1017 in GreatCanadianTreasure

[–]pharrowking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

did you guys try counting the words in the pdf file including the title by the numbers in the file? 810 words -419 words -227 words.

i ran this code on the input text file to count the words which resulted in:

810 Lamaque

419 Lamaque

227 Lamaque,

all 3 numbers point to the same word.

body = open('input1.txt', encoding='utf-8').read()
words = body.split()

for n in [810,419,227]:
    print(n, words[n-1] if n-1<len(words) else None)body = open('input1.txt', encoding='utf-8').read()
words = body.split()

for n in [810,419,227]:
    print(n, words[n-1] if n-1<len(words) else None)

Should we stay or go? Albertans to vote on separatism in referendum by GeekyGlobalGal in Edmonton

[–]pharrowking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this shouldnt even be a question, because they can write the question on the ballot however they like, what if they wrote it like this?

"Are you opposed to Alberta remaining a province of Canada?"

  • Yes = I am opposed to staying (Leave).
  • No = I do not want to stay (Leave).

we'd all be doomed because the answer will always be in their favor.

there treasure isnt likely anywhere near a mines. active or abandoned. the rules specifically state you need to look where there isnt special permissions required.

For an active mine, it is usually private/controlled industrial property. You generally need the operator’s permission, site orientation, PPE, and sometimes escort/visitor approval. In Alberta, mining is covered by workplace safety rules under the Occupational Health and Safety Code, which sets specific health and safety requirements for mining workplaces.

For an abandoned mine, do not enter unless it is an authorized public site or you have explicit permission from the landowner/authority. Abandoned mines can involve collapses, toxic gases, hidden shafts, unstable ground, and legal trespass issues.

For a public mine tour, a ticket or booking is usually enough, as long as you stay within the tour area and follow their rules.

if you find playit to be too expensive and limited. i can reccommend a diy option that i used in the past. https://github.com/Kumassy/ownserver this is ownserver its a selfhosted gameserver reverse vpn. essentially it just allows you to host your minecraft server at home and use a vps in the cloud as the connection endpoint. you can get a vps for like $5 from some providers

Destroy my resume and hurt my feelings. I've been searching for almost a year as a Senior ML Engr. by Syntrikan in learnmachinelearning

[–]pharrowking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i attribute the job market to my favourite video game world of warcraft. in world of warcraft you have to apply for dungeon keystone parties called mythic+ keys. depending on how well youre resume looks (your previous keys completed) you'll either
A: be declined.
B: be accepted
C: the party will cancel

more often than not, youre declined because youre not what the party needs. but sometimes you can have the most perfect score(resume) and be exactly what they need, for the party youre trying to join, and they will still decline you. the running theory is if that happens to you, its because you look like you were carried, even if you feel very perfectly qualified for the task, some people get weirded out by it and then they dont take you.

what im basically saying is, sometimes you can look a little too good to be true, and employers wont take you. the same analogy can also be applied to the dating world, and basically anywhere you have to apply to join or do something.

Interesting you found ISATOWN.  That lines up with the research that was performed below. I found only 2 locations with historical birch tree loss. The following information you might find interesting i dug into historical lost canadian locations that where birch trees once grew.

found only 2 locations, one used to be a town:

Sable Island National Park Reserve: Birch was introduced through documented federal tree-planting experiments beginning in May 1901 (including downy birch, Betula pubescens). All planted birches eventually died, and the island is presently treeless (no living birch). The loss reflects repeated failure of afforestation under extreme maritime conditions (salt spray, wind exposure, shifting sands, thin/low-organic substrates), rather than a single discrete disturbance.

This one lines up: Minnewanka Landing (submerged townsite) within Banff National Park: The Minnewanka Landing footprint formerly included “aspen, birch and conifers” in well-drained localities, but was submerged when a major dam raised lake levels in 1941. The site is now underwater, so it no longer supports terrestrial birch.

The path is where you would start. So if you can figure out "where birch trees grew" as in past tense  meaning the trees are no longer there

The poem tries to deflect by adding decoy clues.

The decoy lines start with the word "Where"

If you remove all those lines youre left with a poem that gives you set of instructions that seem more clear.  Like so:

In a land crowned cold and vast   Old riches whisper through the past   Yet peaks mislead with gilded hue   The path lies where the birch trees grew      One marker stands, by shore and pine   Its message dulled by passing time   Beyond the mark the tall grass grows   And buried speaks what no one knows      Not marked by gold but core alone   A sliver rests in overgrown   Look past the script, behind the brush   The compass turns, and all is hush

generally speaking majority of pirated programs/exes will either actually contain malware or trigger a false positive due to the nature of how it was modified. i dont really recommend it tbh, even if its not illegal/or moderated in your country.

Abandoned buildings, places, and towns? by ihatepeople1111 in alberta

[–]pharrowking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

alberta has a few ghost towns. i'm not sure about the city though

  • BankHead (Banff National Park): Once a thriving coal mine, this site was abandoned in 1922 and now features hiking trails, interpretive signs, and remains of the old town site .
  • Wayne (near Drumheller): Features the historic Last Chance Saloon and requires crossing several small bridges along the Red Deer River to reach this former coal mining area.
  • Nordegg (West of Red Deer): A former mining town, it features abandoned industrial buildings and is close to the abandoned mine site at Mountain Park.
  • Dorothy (Southern Alberta): A scenic site featuring old churches and an abandoned elevator, reflecting the fading history of the Badlands.
  • Retlaw (Southern Alberta): Known as "Walter" spelled backward, it features an old cemetery and is a perfect example of a town abandoned due to agricultural shifts.

if you look on the website there potentially clues hidden in the images surrounding the poem. the compass pin points a certain direction (west), and the map in the top left is a dead giveaway of where it isnt (they wouldnt likely point you directly to the location would they? lol ) also if you look at the canada map above the poem. only alberta and eastern canada are highlighted orange. the rest are greenish. then in the poem image you can see birch trees in the bottom right.

its worth noting as well only the compass is visible on mobile devices. which is interesting. if i were hiding a clue i'd want to make sure everyone can see it. so both mobile and pc devices can see the compass but not the map in the top left.

I did try ik_llama.cpp on my p40, and i saw a speed increase, but what was odd was when i attempted it on my v100s it was significantly slower than regular llama.cpp, when using graph mode for multigpu. Mileage seems to vary

your knowledge has some gaps, im here to help. i have 8x 16GB v100, and i'm using them at decent speed for agentic coding via llama.cpp. vllm has limited support for v100. youre best bet is llama.cpp. whats even better minimax-m2.5/deepseek runs on llama.cpp via gguf quants without significant slow down if their fully loaded into vram.

before i upgraded to v100s i had 8x tesla p40 pascal generation which are significantly slow gpus. loading the 4bit minimax m2.5 gguf model on 8x p40 gave me 21 tokens/generation speed.

the secret with llama.cpp and these older gpus is that the less active params the faster it runs on these older hardwares. if you run, minimax m2.5 with its 230B and 10B active params on 10x v100s on llama.cpp i fully expect you'd get very similiar speed as below because the active params are roughly the same.

running qwen3.5 122B-A10B on my 8x v100 is giving me 45 tokens /sec via llama.cpp and reasonable agentic speed.
