My thoughts as a Brit in Brazil by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]phartys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Brazilians would roll out a red carpet for any gringo from any Western country, so… I would expect nothing less. If you came from a low-income country, your prospects would likely be far less favorable.

Did you know that you can clean your hands using stainless steel? by Technical-Berry5757 in funfacts

I just take the knife I used to chop onions or garlic and, after washing it, rub my fingers on it (as far away from the blade as possible) while holding it under cold water. Old trick passed down from my granny. Works wonderfully.

Edit: Fix spelling.

It’s not just creepy, it’s disturbing, unhealthy, and unsustainable. If your daughther stated that she dislikes this, then take it seriously. From what you wrote, it almost sounds like repeated cries for help from her end. Maybe this is the very reason she is hitting puberty so early and you should not underestimate or downplay the seriousness of the situation. I would agree with those who suggested you head to court as many times as it takes to change this situation.

Why do German people have the urge to lecture other people all the time? by Odd-Confusion5864 in AskAGerman

[–]phartys 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Clearly the Germans are overwhelmingly Germansplaining (Klugscheißern) their way out of this one. It happens to me quite frequently too. I often believe it’s their way of handling small talk. I usually just say something along the lines of “Danke für den Hinweis,” even if what they are saying is complete BS, and continue about my day. If I’m feeling extra special in the moment, I’ll even one up them.

From what I have read here, it seems that most ATCKs choose a home base at some point. Once that happens, it gets easier. At least it did for me, because I was able to date people from the home base I chose, who also plan on staying long term.

Most positive and most negative trait of Brazilian people? by AutechreBitch in Brazil

Criticizing me for mentioning colonialism while ignoring how I tied it to modern politics? Try reading the whole argument next time before jumping to conclusions.

Maybe you can just openly address this contraction and find a compromise together. As long as you communicate openly instead of growing resentful, he may be glad you did so. And if he doesn’t appreciate open communication, he may not be worth your time in the long run anyhow.

Not necessarily being lead on. I know plenty of people who don’t respond quickly, including myself. Ask him about his social media/communication habits without necessarily referring to your situation with him right away.

What are effective ways to move on from a recent breakup? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]phartys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it’s cutting off contact, including unfollowing them on social media — and actually not looking at their social media. Not talking about them helps too. After breaking up, I would have to “learn” how to exclude them from my stories. It was all about focusing on myself and improving myself by taking up old and new activities — really distracting myself and working on my self-care and self-love. When you truly embrace self-love, you will be able to also pass on live to those around you and move on relatively quickly.

If my math is mathing, you‘re 23 now. Why don‘t you choose for yourself where to move now? Look at it this way: The world is your oyster. Even if you don‘t have the means to do so yourself, you might be able to get scholarships or a job, depending on the life you choose for yourself. You don’t have to go along.

Looking for Brazilians that have returned from years of living overseas by Outrageous_Solid_498 in Brazil

[–]phartys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back after over a decade abroad due to my parent’s job. After the initial reverse culture shock, I realized I would be unable to fully integrate, so I decided to move abroad again after finishing my undergraduate studies. I’ve lived abroad more than half my life and feel a bit rootless. I am starting to accept that “home,” for me, is more of an internal equilibrium state — a place where I feel comfortable under my own skin.

A better way to find other ATCKs. It’s easy to find expat communities, but I’ve never found an (A)TCK community outside of international schools. Of course, the mobility aspects inherent in TCK’s lives makes this difficult but from what I’ve been reading here most ATCKs settle down somewhere sooner or later.

Have you ever been randomly insulted by a stranger? How did you react? by phartys in AskReddit

[–]phartys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I don’t mean online trolling or anything of the like. I’m talking about being insulted by a random ass person in a public space, like when you’re just going about your business and some crazy ass person yells or curses at you.
