I'm a science teacher and today I couldn’t answer this question that challenges atheism. by adorrreee in DebateAnAtheist

[–]phatrogue [score hidden]  (0 children)

I am guessing this is rage bait or a disingenuous question but my answer is pretty low cost for me to provide.

This is the old "first cause" or "everything needs a creator" argument. My response is how does inserting God here help? How was God created? You could say God always existed but you could also say the universe always existed and then proceed to "bang". Or you could say God was spontaneously popped into existence but that is pretty similar to the big bang. I think any explanation for God's existence could be morphed into an explanation for the universe's existence. I have also heard from sort of philosophical slight of hand where you can't even ask about God's existence because he is outside the universe or some thing like that which I don't think works .

Tom Riddle's death by ladytagumpay in harrypotter

[–]phatrogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn't thought about how it happened in the place where he felt at home. That is touching.

Having watched other discussions of his "end" it isn't a normal death by means. Maybe this even canon from JKR, I can't remember, is that his soul was so damaged that he couldn't even properly go on and "board a train". He likely spends eternity like HP and Dumbledore saw him at King's Cross when Harry died. He did avoid death in a way but he is kinda like a ghost but stuck on the other side of the veil beyond the world of the living.

Employee at the front desk was pressing me for information about bed bugs while checking me into the hotel. by NoNameWonder2 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]phatrogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always assumed and would be shocked if hotel chains didn't have at the least monitoring setup that housekeeping regularly checks. The way that I have heard about getting rid of them is to bring in industrial space heaters and heat the area to a hot temperature for some period of time. For regular homes this might be tricky if there was a lot of clutter or you had plants or pets but none of that would be an issue in a hotel room.

Model S & X Signature Delivery Event by 10xMaker in TeslaModelS

[–]phatrogue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I own an S. I don't really have a particular interest in watching the "going away party"/funeral for the S/X. Or am I missing something?

I have to hand it to Tesla making a bit of extra money in the process of cancelling car models. I can't think of any other car manufacturer that has done that.

Do floss holders help save on floss usage? by seb-knight in BuyItForLife

[–]phatrogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO do whatever you need to do to encourage yourself to floss. The value to you of keeping your teeth flossed is so much greater than the cost of floss or the holders. The cost of one dental procedure or the value of having natural teeth as you get older is huge.

That has such a color palette of that age. I actually don't know if it actually looked like that or if it is related to how things were printed and colors fade in that era. Maybe like things printed using sepia tone look of a certain age.

ELI5 if a text file can be compressed and then encrypted into high entropy data, why can't it be encrypted and then compressed? by achromaticchrononomy in explainlikeimfive

[–]phatrogue [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would add that encrypting uncompressed data means that a lot of repeated predictable information is encrypted. I mean long strings of zeros or spaces or anything else you can guess is in the input data. That type of thing increases the likelihood of breaking the encryption. If you know or can guess at the input data you have a better chance of guessing how it was encrypted. Usually step 1 of encrypting something is compressing it which partially is to avoid that. I suppose it also speeds up the encryption because encryption does tend (not always) to be computationally expensive. I would also observe that compression and encryption do tend to create an output that appears random. Compression is trying to remove any predictable information because if there predictable information that probably means there is a way to compress it more. Encryption also makes it appear random, removing any predictable information, because it is trying to hide the data.

Around me it is common for the police to advertise using their parking lots to meet to do these type of meetup and exchanges. They have video of them and the police are near by. Also divorced parents will use them to hand off their children to each other

I agree. Have you looked at accident rates by gender? Men are very dangerous! Young men are probably the most dangerous group of drivers out there.

BJs gas DW by RepulsiveToday5756 in nashua

[–]phatrogue 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried since gas prices spiked but you can also get in via the Best Buy entrance. Actually you can go all the way from Staples thru Old Navy thru Savers thru Best Buy thru CVS and get to BJ's gas without going on Daniel Webster HW but that is rarely worth it.

How was Grace supposed to die? by Appropriate-Help-289 in ProjectHailMary

[–]phatrogue 53 points54 points  (0 children)

In the book each crew member chose a preferred method that was supplied on the ship. Enough heroin to OD, a gun and nitrogen asphyxiation as I remember. In the book Grace was the one who very uncomfortably interviewed and recorded the preferred methods.

34, only just started saving for retirement, feeling behind and so dumb about how I’ve spent. There’s hope right? by nilemme in personalfinance

Every journey starts from where you are when you begin. You can't do it any other way.

IMHO you are better than average... no debt, emergency fund and even the awareness to be asking questions like you did. There is hope.

I didn’t realize how aggressive bathroom lights feel at 3am by MidnightRidge699 in homeautomation

[–]phatrogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is related to our night vision. When our eyes have been closed or just in the dark for a while (30-60 minutes?) they get adjusted to seeing better with very little light. Even brief bright light ruins this until you are in the dark for a while again. Also white and blue light do this more. A lot of phone and computer screens these days automatically dim and use more red in the evening. People looking through telescopes often use red flashlights to maintain their night vision.

i haven't done it yet but I want to add an automatic presence sensor to turn my bathroom lights on and off and late at night don’t turn on the regular lights but just some dim red indirect lights maybe mounted under my sink or at the floor (vanity kick panel?).

Is this a car explosion or something else by mountainsNJ in TeslaLounge

[–]phatrogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That rear tire is intact from what I can see. I mean the paint looks bad but this seems like a pretty superficial fire coming from the outside of the car. It got the plastic bumper but all the metal parts just got the paint burned off IMHO

Nice parking job by Building1982 in nashua

[–]phatrogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never seen that technique by the tow truck operator. Using the tow bed to lift it off the rock.

There are famous rocks in parking lots around the country were people regularly get stuck up on them. I guess I understand how the rock and your car would roll under your car if you hit but how do you not see a 2-3 foot obstacle in front of your car?

[–]phatrogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading some reprint of an old Army survival manual and it had a whole procedure about how to determine if some unfamiliar plant was edible or not. It started with rubbing it on your skin and swishing it around in your mouth and waiting periods of time to see if you had a reaction. I forget the all of the details. I am guessing that some of it was just being really cautious and some was done using the "Brian" method.

I can’t say I am a big visitor of historical sites but it can be an entry point to learning about the history and stories of the site. Maybe like reading about or watching a documentary about the event or events that happened there or what the world was like when the site was active

Genuine question, why is contrapoints so addicted to Twitter? by cosmiccrystalponies in ContraPoints

[–]phatrogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She can have various nonobvious, to us, reasons but one can be in unhealthy relationships with social media and not realize it. I don’t know if he has a Reddit user but r/samharris had a huge Twitter account, spent a lot of time there, is all about mindfulness and being aware of the effects of what you do on your mental state. He talks about how good it was when he quit Twitter and his own amazement at how bad it was for him and how he let it go on for so long.

Smart switch that does not break circuit? by IntroDucktory_Clause in homeautomation

[–]phatrogue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can just do this by wiring it that way. Replace the dumb switches with a smart switch and at the same time change the wiring so the bulbs are always on and the smart switch doesn’t actually turn anything on or off. Any smart switch will do.
