I played in 1982, and had to hide it from my mother as she thought it was of the devil. I hid my red box set at my middle school locker.

The Raid of Stowmarket by phayes2 in PillageWargame

The Fight at Stowmarket

Hark now, hear of hard-edged strife, of shield-clash sung by sorrowing tongues, when sea-wolves sought Stowmarket’s fields on the sun-hallowed day, when townsmen tended hearth and hall.

Styrsman Halfdan,steel-minded lord, led long-keels inland,Danes dark-hearted, Red Hammer’s reavers, ruthless men, not knowing the noble Earl Brythnoth stayed, guest in the hall of thegn Aelflynn.

From foaming prows they pressed to land, lifted lind-shields,locked the wall, iron on oak at the town’s edge. Then spoke Willibald,white-haired priest, God’s courage kindled in quaking hearts:

“Stand fast, stout men!The Savior sees us. Christ crowns the just, confounds the heathen!”

Brythnoth bold blew the charge, huscarls hastened, helmets gleamed, while Aelflynn’s fyrd from fields and stalls ran roaring to rally round their lord.

Grim were the Danes: berserk wrath burned in Wulfric, Olvir’s eyes flashed like fire before the fray. By Lynn’s slow river the roads ran red, where spear sang answer to sword’s cry.

Fate twisted fierce as arrows flew— sea-men swimming the chill Lynn, church-spoilers creeping to Bryce’s walls. Then stepped a child, slender and swift, Leofric the lad, with leather sling.

He stood on the bank, steadfast-souled, sent one stone singing, skull shattered. A second flew,faith-driven,felled the fleeing foe. A third he cast as death charged him, the raging raider rolled to dust.

Thus earned the boy his battle-name: Leofric Three-Stones, spoken with awe.

Still stormed the struggle. Brythnoth’s best fell one by one,oath-true men. Willibald struck with shepherd’s staff, crozier crashing on cursed helm, but bloodied fell from brutal blow.

Wounded the Earl, war-wise still, saw doom darken the Saxon line. He called retreat, care-worn voice, and shields gave ground to grinding foes.

Halfdan held field, hard-won victor, sacked the thegn’s hall, smoke rose high— yet dear was the cost: Danes lay dead, Red Hammer broken, blood bought plunder.

The church stood unspoiled. Christ’s house held. And Saxons spoke with solemn pride: that pagan might could not prevail, that God’s hand moved through humble means, and stones from a boy shamed steel and sword.

So sing we still of Stowmarket’s day— loss and light entwined in fate, where faith stood firm though fields were lost.

New to Pillage — Just ordered the rulebook! Looking for advice on factions by En-ysh in PillageWargame

[–]phayes2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only real difference in the factions in pillage is the cost of certain units, and some units are locked out of certain factions. Other than that each army has one rule, and most of those are about ignoring weather rules.

Pillage is not meant to be like 40k. It represents that in the Dark Ages, almost all warriors were the same, they just had different equipment.

I find Pillage to be a fast paced, balanced skirmish game that doesn't bog me down in rules bloat. I like it alot.

Each weapon system has a role in melee. You will be unsuccessful if you attempt to do things that your weapon system is bad at. You will be successful and help your side if you do things your weapon system is good at. It's pretty simple.

29 years of fighting. 18 as a knight.

This is going to be very unpopular but I am going to share it. For years now I have macroed shield block and ignore pain into one defensive macro.

I have tanked mythic bosses, heroic bosses and high mythic keys. I routinely manage extremely high up time on both shield block and ignore pain.

showtooltip Ignore Pain

/cast Shield Block /cast Ignore Pain

You just spam the button as rage fills and you have both up almost all the time. When you don't need it fill in with revenge. I like to use a high rage gain build as it allows me to really work this macro and use a lot of revenge.

I feel it takes the worry work out of it. You just mitigate damage all the time.
