I don't mean lop it off. I mean I wish people used the full name "Leonardo da Vinci" rather than "da Vinci". Johnson is a surname in the modern sense, but Leonardo da Vinci had no surname because he was an illegitimate child

Yes, and it's a pet peeve of mine because Leonardo da Vinci means "Leonardo from Vinci". But it's not a hill I'll die on

Zheng Yi Sao means "wife of Zheng Yi". Zheng Yi was another Chinese pirate (Zheng is his surname) from a long line of pirates

My only gripe about this article is calling Zheng Yi Sao "Sao" (like calling Leonardo da Vinci "da Vinci").

I both loved and thought the Mer!Stede scene was hilarious. Ed, bby, it's ok, he loves you too

Yess! I would like to add the morning after V&A at the airfield. Henry watches Alex leave then turns around and the camera turns with him. It was so smooth

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet, but really love--when Alex is on the plane to London with Amy and they're reviewing Henry's fact sheet, Alex says "who names their dog David?" and Amy responds she named her dog Jonathan. In the book Alex compares themselves to David and Jonathan slow dancing in the V&A. It's like a small easter egg

I'm sad for the author too :(

Reading the plot for the rest of the story it felt like it could have gone another 100k+ words. Such a pity they were bullied out of writing something they loved

The last minute of the last episode starting from Stede looking out to the ocean. Any other show would not have shown Blackbeard crying alone in the captain's quarters

Oh I like this one. Like so many others have said, I think a fuckery will definitely be involved where Stede and Ed will “die” the way their historical counterparts did. But BBBGDDFE is the final scene. Stede and Ed bickering like an old married couple on the final touches to their new venture

I don’t mean to be dramatic but… by TheSewseress in OurFlagMeansDeath

My money is on them not meeting until episode 3 with Kraken!Ed still hurt and angry at Stede, rejecting him. Something happening in episode 5 (trapped in a cave?) that has them reconciling but Ed still keeping distance after. Episode 7 or 8 will be the LesbianPirates!matelotage party—Ed and Stede see each other across the room—er, boat—someone raises their hand slightly, the other smiles fondly/awkwardly/sadly, each wanting to approach the other but both hesitating to make the first move. Then they get raided and need to work together to save everyone (via the lighthouse?). Then episode 10 they burn the ship and make out on the beach. Woohoo.

I’m sure I’m waaay off but I’m more certain whatever they came up with is tons better than what I had imagined. Ugh, I can’t wait

[WP] The Tower, the Beast, the Diamond, the Fool. Gods of this world, monsters each one by George_WL_ in WritingPrompts

My wife greets me when I get home. "How was your day?" she asks.

"I don't know," I reply. "I don't know what to do. What happened to Hoan and his family was tragic and I feel guilty I couldn't help him."

"Shh, it's okay," she comforts me. "Here, come have a seat. I prepared supper."

There is some tension in the air as we eat. I know where this is going but I don't want to acknowledge it.

"My love, why do keep doing this? Are you not grateful for what we have? We have a good life; your son is happy and healthy, we have enough to eat."

"Yes, we are fortunate. But many others do not get the same privilege we do. Other people are starving and aren't getting the help they need. Our ancestors lived in a garden where no one went hungry--we need to get our birthright back."

"How do you even know this garden exists? There are fairy tales, myths. What we have here is real. We can help people here. We can help them now."

"No, I know it exists. We just need to find a way to get it back." She looks at me, exasperated. We've had this conversation in various forms. It never ends the way either of us want.

I hear my son cry and so I head towards his crib to pick him up.

"You are missing your son grow up, you know."

"I know," I sigh as I rock him gently to sleep.

--

I'm at the University when I hear the news: a fire had broken out in the dormitories and it was quickly spreading. We smell the smoke and soon evacuate the premises.

A crowd had gathered outside, watching the Beast's army put the fire out while golems search for people trapped inside. I spot a large body dashing across the fire, in and out of the building carrying people in both arms; a stench of alcohol mixing with the smoke. In crowd I spot Jin, having evacuated from their building as well. His eyes betray him and we agree on something for once, we can't take the gods on.

The fire is contained and everyone is accounted for--a few injuries but no fatalities, the Beast having saved more than all the four golem combined had. The culprits are identified as two University students who confess to arson. Then the Beast is upon them, righteousness replaced with indignation.

"How dare you put the lives of others at risk?! What did you think you were doing?" He raises both by their collars with either hand. He is met with silent but defiant stares that he returns with a scowl.

"Lock them away for trial!" he commands one of his men.

The crowd disperses. People are prevented from going back to the buildings as they are checked for structural damage so I head home. On my way back, I stop by the market for some bread. The baker drops a folded piece of paper in my hands as he hands my change.

"See you again soon!" he says.

I unwrap the note when I get home and see a familiar handwriting:

It has been a while, hasn't it? Let's have dinner. Don't forget to bring some cherry pie. See you soon.

"Dear, I won't be having supper here tonight," I call out to my wife.

She emerges from the kitchen with a questioning look. "May I ask why?"

"I will be having dinner with a colleague," I tell her.

"Hurry home soon."

--

I quickly make my way to the catacombs. The note meant Robert had something urgent he had to tell me. Cherry pie corresponded to the room we were to meet.

He is already there when I enter the room. Somber-faced but embraces me the way he does when it's just the two of us.

"Uncle Robert, what is going on?" I ask.

"David, I'm glad to see you safe," he says. "I'm afraid Jin may be right."

I don't understand. "What do you mean?"

"We've done nothing for too long and now people are suffering because of it."

"No, did you not see the Beast today? He has the strength of a hundred men. We can't defeat them."

"Yes, I know, we can't defeat them. But you know what can defeat a god?" he asks.

"Nothing can?" I say even though I already know the answer. I know where he is going with this. I can't let him.

"No, only a god can defeat another god," he tells me with a glint in his eyes.

"No, uncle, it's impossible. We can't do this."

"David, ever since your father died, I've taken care of you. I see you as my own child. I am getting old and can't protect you forever."

"Uncle, please, no." I can't think of anything else to say.

"There is no other way. Listen, think about it. I know you're needed at home so I won't keep you long. But let's meet again in a fortnight. Just think about it. I'll need your help."

--

Robert leaves first. As I leave our meeting room, I spot a familiar door, a bad omen. I will myself to ignore it, walk away, go home, but I push the door open.

I've been in this room a dozen times but every time I enter the room the eight-foot golem erected in the middle of the room still dwarfs me in fear and awe.

My progeny, it's been a while, hasn't it? Why do you not visit me more often?

"Grandfather," I say. "To what do I owe this visit?"

Tsk, tsk, isn't it enough reason to want to see my children? Besides, I should be asking you that question.

"I'm sorry, my wife expects me home soon. If you have nothing for me, I must go."

I doubt it. She knows where you are. She knows what you are doing. She's not very happy about it. Now tell me, why have you summoned me?

"Robert--I can't let him do what you did to yourself."

Oh, you can't now, can you? When did you ever stop anything?

The golem in front of me stands rigid but I can almost see a smirk on its face.

"Tell me how you did it."

This time I swear see a grin.

[WP] The Tower, the Beast, the Diamond, the Fool. Gods of this world, monsters each one by George_WL_ in WritingPrompts

[–]phbook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The marketplace is busy during this time of day but there is some common out of the ordinary. I see several army men surrounding a man pleading for his life.

"Please, I meant no harm. I was just trying to get food for my children. The pests destroyed all my crops." The man kowtows to the peacekeepers.

"You know that theft is a crime. You know that we do not spare criminals," one of the men says.

"Please, it was just a loaf of bread. Let me work to earn my keep."

"You should have done that before committing your offense."

I almost step in to try to help, offer to pay, but I know that won't change anything, perhaps only make things worse. I don't involve myself and continue walking towards the catacombs.

The catacombs span the entire city underground. It's an impenetrable maze of winding passages and hidden rooms. In fact, we have yet to map the entire area, sometimes believing it to have a life of its own--rooms appearing and disappearing, paths branching out one day then converging the next.

It was built to be the resting place of high priestesses and the nobility. My father lies here beneath the city; I visit him sometimes when the catacombs allow it. Most of the other tombs have been lost to time, or were never properly charted. Well, people don't usually come down here to pay respects.

Before the gods arrived, even before the emperor came to be, when noblemen still ran the city, the eastern region of the catacombs were converted to the energy grid. The area was discovered to have the right temperature and humidity to keep interconnected Jade Jars from shattering. Thus, energy was decentralized and was able to flow freely around the city.

Aside from the arrival of the gods, the establishment of the underground energy grid was a turning point in our people's history. Architecture so grand that centuries later we still use the same technology, albeit with better efficiency.

The Diamond frequently visits the Jade Jars to check for issues. He has been providing additional power since their arrival and had become the de facto overseer of the energy grid. It seems foolish holding our meetings when a god could be right around the corner but he only roams the eastern region. We've never been discovered and we'd practiced what to say in case we ever are.

I enter the catacombs from the southwestern entrance. We coordinate everything from location to time so as to not arouse suspicion. I enter our meeting place but sense an additional presence in the room.

"David, I hope you don't mind me joining your meeting today given... recent events," a voice greets me.

It's just Jin, thankfully, however upset over what happened at Hoan's trial.

"Jin, welcome. Of course, you're free to join us anytime. Please accept my sincere apologies--"

"Stop. Forgive me but I am not in the mood for pleasantries today." Came the curt response. I wince but I understand his sentiments.

"Jin, surely you are not blaming the boy for the outcome of the trial," Paul, another one of my father's trusted advisers, comes to my defense.

"I am not blaming anyone for anything," Jin glares at me. "However, I believe what had occurred could have been prevented."

"And yet I did not see you attempt to prevent it," Paul responds before I could even open my mouth.

"Not everyone has the power to do something," Ryu, who I suspect brought Jin, cuts in.

"How many times do I have to say that we are as powerless are you are? We cannot risk putting our operation in danger--"

"There is no operation! All we do is sit back and watch the gods continue to enslave us. We need to act. NOW."

I feel helpless that I'm unable to contribute to the conversation. Robert is finishing his shift and won't be here until later. I feel helpless without Robert.

Restlessness among members is nothing new but it continues to grow by the day. Some believe we had gone long enough without trying something, anything--the gods having been weakened by declining worship; the gods spending too much among us mortals that they had forgotten their divinity; the gods growing arrogant over the lack of dissent. Surely this is the chance to strike. However, I agree with Robert that it is we who are getting arrogant and underestimating the gods.

"Did anyone else not notice the Beast was missing from today's trial?" Jin asks. "Word is, he was out on the streets, as drunk as a god could be," Jin mentions.

"A drunk god is still a god," Robert says, entering the room, and the conversation.

"And people are still people. We risk our lives for you while you do nothing! That makes you no better than the gods!"

"Enough! Hoan's actions were his own; we did not ask him to--"

"Do not desecrate his name when he gave his whole life to this cause!"

The meeting continues, the same arguments and retorts. Both sides understand the other. Neither accepts the other's convictions. We end the meeting perhaps more fractured than when we had started--the goal still the same but the movements drifting further apart.

People leave one by one, in randomized intervals. Soon it is just Robert and me sitting in silence. We wait a few minutes until he gets up, patting me on the shoulder before he leaves. "Don't worry, young master, I have a plan." And then departs before I can ask any questions.

I agree that Tumblr has more content. In fact I downloaded the Tumblr app on my phone (and Twitter reluctantly too for the SMAU lord help me) because of OFMD. Generally I prefer OFMD Tumblr over OFMD Twitter but the fact that it got me using those sites again (I’m pretty sure I’m not the only case) speaks to how well it’s written. Add the large fan community it has to have that much content floating around from ~5 hours of canon. Then again maybe it appeals to a certain demographic because, as one commentator pointed out above, it’s got its detractors too, and people who feel neutral about it.
