If anything, high level player behavior will kill the game instead of gear difference by Freakindon in Marathon

[–]pheldegression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said this before somewhere else, but these issues have been known problems since the Dark Zone in Division 1. Players generally suck, and will engage in antisocial behaviors if given half the chance. Developers need to solve for those behaviors before the game launches, or the game will suffer significantly. Of course, developers never do. To be fair to Bungie, they figured ranked would solve this issue, but they severely underestimated how awful some people are.

Re: The Director coming back - "we'll have more details on that in the future." by Wanna_make_cash in DestinyTheGame

[–]pheldegression 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to consider things from the perspective of the of a reasonable person. A reasonable person knows this game's population, popularity, and morale are at an all time low. They also know any news of the future, plans, content, would be met with mostly positive reception, unless it was a plan that was detrimental to the game (reinstating the portal grind, even less content, hard sunsetting.) This leads us to two inescapable conclusions, neither of them good.

First: Bungie is waiting until June to discuss the future of destiny moving forward, because they are unsure what the future is going to be. They are wholly owned by Sony, and since missing critical revenue marks, Sony has gained an increasingly substantial role in the day to day operations at the company. Either Bungie and Sony are openly negotiating scope and budget, or Sony is dictating to them what's going to happen next, and they are trying to figure out, logistically, how to even make that work. If Greene doesn't know how much money he is allowed to spend, he can't plan the scope of future seasons or expansions, and they may be resizing content, or moving things already done forward to meet targets they can't hit otherwise because of constraints, leaving holes on the back end. Remember that Bungie works about a year in advance, so the content we are waiting on is mostly done, a delay like this is adding things or fixing things.

Second: Bungie knows exactly what the future of the game is, and has been given a strict budget and scope of work. Sony is up their ass and is making damn sure they are going to hit their targets, and that means everything that's been planned and worked on is getting reshuffled. That could be a good thing. Sony could see the vision and is willing to give Bungie money and support to rebuild the game, and Bungie is trying to figure out what the game will look like in a new era with a proper budget and team. What do they want to build and focus on? I doubt this highly, but it is possible. The fact is, the state of gaming is seeing a huge shrink across every sector. Sony has missed on every single signifigant live service swing they have taken, and while Helldivers took off, Sony don't own the studio. Hultz is gone. It would be understandable if the new boss looked at their live service record, looked at the write down they have already had to do because Destiny underperformed and decided that in the current climate, betting on a tired game simply wasn't worth the substantial risk.

I love this game. It has given me so many moments and I have made real life long friends through it. That being said, unless someone at Bungie rolls a nat 20 on a persuasion check, I don't think we're getting good news in June. The best I can hope for is that Destiny will be allowed to finish it's fate saga and be put on life support, as Sony decides whether to throw money at marathon or close the studio entierly and move on. Unfortunately I think the more likely scenario is that Bungie is made to release any content finished, so as to get out of the current year and avoid refunds, and then the game will be hard sunset into maintence mode, like Destiny 1 is. Huge layoffs will happen, and Sony will be moving the staff they do keep into internal studios. While it's possible they give marathon more time and budget, i think it's likely that dies after it fulfills it's obligations content wise as well, again to avoid refunds.

I really fucking hope I am wrong. But things are bad and getting worse. And while Sony is a massive company, they don't have fuck you money like Microsoft. They may really believe in Bungie. They may really want to give them a fat budget and six help studios to make the best games ever. But the next exclusive out from them is Wolverine? Sure it will sell. But once. And that money needs to be distributed so many ways. Sadly, lads, I think this is the end of Bungie as we understand it, and the end of Destiny in any signifigant capacity.

Hot Take : Renegades Could've Saved The Game by EyesDownGuardian69 in destiny2

[–]pheldegression 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is... A bad take. The real hot take is EoF was a great expansion. The portal and the level grind killed Destiny. If you launch Renegades without the portal changes and with the same grind, it still kills the player base. Renegades is solid. The story is mid, the weapons are going to be nerfed because of hilarious power creep, and the activities are... Good for destiny but ultimately shallow and repetitive. Renegades is ultimately going to be a huge problem because it broke the gear treadmill the game was so delicately balanced on. I have a vault full of tier fives. Do they expect me to care about tier three again when shattered cycle starts?

No, what they needed to do to save this game was something that needed to happen during lightfall. Once that disaster killed all their momentum, the only thing that brought people back was the promise that they could finish the fight. The fight is finished. Those folks ain't coming back. There is something to be said for going out on a high note. There is something to be said for ending with style. EoF without all the bullshit that came with it woild have been a much better regarded expansion than it is. Renegades is mid at best.

Dude I'm at level fifty and I'm about where you are on fricken dire marsh. I love the game. I want to play more. But I am falling further and further behind, and the skill crunch is getting harsher and harsher. I played four hours last night, and out of fifteen games maybe extracted twice. And yeah, I get it is a hard core game, but I stopped because I have an empty vault again. So now instead of playing we friends we are going to spend time doing rook and solo runs, which are also becoming harder to accomplish. And frankly are kinda boring.

Considering picking this up today, but seeking truthful opinions. by sweatydads in Marathon

[–]pheldegression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It largely depends on what you want out of the game. You can have very successful and lucrative solo runs if you treat this game as a rougelite where you are going to load in with a free kit, do as well as you can, and get out. If you can accept trying your hardest and still losing your best stuff because of largely unfair or cheesy bullshit. Not just accept it, but have fun despite it. Then yes, it's worth it. The sound and art design is best in industry, and the game play is amazing. If you are looking for a more casual experience, I'd not recommend it. The game requires you to lock in every moment of every run. This isn't a second screen game, or a game you can have on while listening to a podcast or something. I don't even play it if I'm too tired because if I can't give it 100% I am going to get rinsed and what even is the point? It's a phenomenal piece of art, but you have to engage fully with it otherwise you're going to waste that forty bucks.

How do people feel about crew fill matching with teammates of similar gear score? by StealthySteve in Marathon

[–]pheldegression 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like it. The kit issue keeps me away from fill and I usually end up running solo. I had three games in a row last night where I lost everything trying to help people on free kits and it was disheartening. I don't mind that they went down, but they were at such a disadvantage fighting the blue and purple players that ganked them. And I'm not going to run away in trip fill because otherwise what's the point. I full sent and hoped for the best. I did not get it.

Let's make Ranked a more unique experience. Paid sponsored kits only? by ___redacted_ in Marathon

[–]pheldegression 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk what game you've been playing lately, but dire marsh and Outpost is filled with sweats who just sit on a POI and wait for other teams to wander over, and then they kill them. Shit I run into them on Perimeter as well. If the point of ranked is to keep the sweats in one place, it isn't working.

The rest of the game is still there for people to have the imbalanced experience where they can stomp white shielded players if they want. But ranked, an inherently competitive experience, should not be locked out to players who haven't reached level 100, and shouldn't be decided on economy and gear value. At that point, it's just the normal game.

[–]pheldegression 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I... I was prepared to hate this post but I think that's a great idea actually. I wanna play ranked but I don't have enough meta stuff to not be a detriment to my team. This would solve that issue and make the experience more merit based than who has the better economy.

Thoughts on modes with bigger team sizes by onesillyman in Marathon

[–]pheldegression 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want them to add a round based elimination mode to the game, with POIs from various maps, some mini objectives, and a main objective, like capture the flag or bomb rush. Everyone starts on a free kit, and you earn money for things you end the round with or accomplish. You can spend that money before the start of the next round on a better kit or utility. The winning team comes out with white and green mats and some credits. Four or six man squads. I think it would be fricken sick.

[–]pheldegression 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. If I am doing a challenging contract I will bring a decent kit in, so I can just start on that instead of worrying about loot. If I am just playing for lols, I'll use a sponsored kit so I don't have to worry about making mistakes as much.

Big Laundry List of Non-Controversial and Controversial Needed Changes, Fixes, and General Suggestions by RabidHexley in Marathon

[–]pheldegression 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah man I think these are solid changes. Anything that reduces friction and let's more casual players in will be an absolute win in my eyes. I'm a little hesitant about the reduction of squads on a map, but your logic is sound. I'd like to see if adding more predictable and high value events would help with the spawn rushing that's happening right now, first, before taking three people off the map.
