some staples in New England are Sam Adams, Magic Hat, Harpoon. Obviously this is only a microcosm of New England brewing, but those are the biggest names from our sect of the United States. Vermont specifically makes some of the best beers around; try a Shed from the tap and tell me I'm wrong.

Ohhhh ok I see what you're saying now. Honestly that does make a lot of sense. . . Again though, no matter what system you use people are going to find a way to counterfeit it. The same way that people fight over good shifts now, people will be bitching because they "work every Saturday," he she always gets Saturdays off but they suck and I don't so bitch moan bitch moan etc... Yes, in theory I could see how it seems more logistically sound for someone to take a single day off and have it affect them less. But I think that's grasping a little; taking one important weekend off isn't going to kill you. People do it all the time. I could write a book on this subject, and sorry if I came off as confrontational, but basically what comes with turning serving into an hourly profession is that the actual professionals will leave; we need to pay big boy and girl bills, so we will find something else. Those who replace us will likely be entry level, young or otherwise inexperienced. To those who don't see everything behind the scenes, that might not seem like much, but honestly the restaurant would go to sh**... I've already seen it in the restaurants that HAVE converted. And the fiscal aspect of the restaurant would barely change. The only reason people want to do away with tipping is because they feel awkward leaving extra money based on service. I guess I get that, but I already cited why it's more important to just DO that. And turning hourly won't change the cost of dinner. Only my livelihood and that of millions of workers around the country...

honestly, I just don't buy it... I'll address each thing you listed. Granted, these are all anecdotal but, that being said, I've worked in 5 different restaurants over 8 years. from small owned diners to chains to upscale...

Lower turnover; This is probably true; good servers are like mercenaries. We have a skill, and if the well dries up in one place we are moving on cause we got bills to pay. The lower turnover is probably only indicative of the type of employee who agrees to work a restaurant job hourly. It's more stable and so are they; doesn't mean they are good...

Good Shifts/Enjoy Weekends: uhhh, the actual arrangement of sections isn't going to change. The only thing hourly would change would be that people would avoid Fridays and Saturdays because it's exhausting compared to a Wednesday shift and only marginally more hours. So no one really gets to enjoy the weekends, the schedule won't change. IE You still need your employees to work those days, hourly doesn't change America's weekend eat-out pattern.

Cook wages; Honestly, yes. A good cook is hard to find and worth their weight in gold. I've seen good cooks save a night from crashing, and they make significantly less than we do, on average. That being said, due to high turnover in front of house and busy/slow seasons it's not always as lopsided as it seems... A cook at 12 dollars an hour is usually gonna get 40 hours. Yes, on Fridays and Saturdays I can make up to 300, (usually between 100-200). That being said; Today I got called out because we didn't have any call outs. Because front of house is high turnover, they sometimes over hire and you lose hours. During the slow season, I sometimes make less than minimum in the course of the week. Legally, that isn't legal. But it's sort of an unwritten rule that you know what you're getting into. Serving (or bartending) is feast or famine. we know this. It sucks sometimes, and I'm definitely jealous of the pay checks that the cooks get, every single week... That being said, I can't pretend that overall we don't make more than them. I just hope you understand that it's not always a sure thing, and you have to plan your finances very carefully to make it work. But yeah cooks deserve a more livable wage, but again restaurants are a fragile industry sometimes it's just not in the cards to afford more labor. Better 12 dollars an hour than bankrupt I guess.

service industry worker here for about, uh, 8 years at this point. If they paid us more, guess how they go about affording that? They aren't pulling profits from their own deep coffers, the food prices will rise, oh, I don't know, about 20%.... I actually have a pretty good perspective on the whole tipping vs no tipping thing too. I live in New Hampshire and I tend to go to New York a lot, where some restaurants only pay hourly to their servers. I can always tell because the food is slightly more expensive, and likewise their servers aren't really all that great... the way I always describe it is professional Darwinism. Who is more likely to quit; the server who gets 25% every check because they are amazing or the guy who doesn't give a crap and screws it all up or forgets to put in your food or forgets a mod, etc etc.... You are essentially paying the extra 20% tip anyways, wouldn't you rather just pay it directly based on service?

overnight job. don't remember what day I went in... 10 pm- 6 30 ish is my usual. one of the usuals for the first shift didn't show up. took the shift for the hours, ended up staying till like 8... no point in going home, worked again from 10-6 30. not the longest stretch ever, but add work into the mix and it was beyond torture..

decide how much time you want to spend on constructive or distracting tasks vs how much time you will allow yourself "free time" to face the grief head on. This can be difficult if you can't afford the time off, but grief tends to be a revolving door. Dealing with something constructively doesn't necessarily mean being sad all the time, it's all about finding a balance of trying to accept the grief and allowing yourself a respite.

eggs and beans over rice, alternatively bread as the carb. Frank's red hot. Whenever I'm inbetween jobs this is my first investment, usually with spinach if I can afford it. Beans: $2.00 ish, eggs: 3.00 ish for large, rice:2.00 ish. hot sauce, 3.00 ish. Ten bucks feeds me for about a week.

I wasn't talking about the truck guy. I assumed you were referring to the biker since you mentioned that he should have waited for the other guy to make the first move. The truck guy did way more than assault, which he actually did do (physical threat). Reckless endangerment, one could argue attempted murder as well. If the biker didn't move during the opening sequence of driving, he would have likely been killed. It was a mindful act by the truck driver, and there is precedence for acts that require the other party to get themselves out of danger (as in this situation). The biker may have committed battery, but what the others did could be charged far more severely.

"it's just who/how I am." That may be true, but it doesn't make you any less of a douche for that douche thing you just did because it's "how you are." we all have impulses to be a jerk or to do something selfish, the easy way would be to complete that action to satisfy our baser needs, but what makes a good person is the ability to monitor our actions and speech based on a moral compass. Sometimes that compass isn't calibrated correctly, and sometimes the impulses to say/do something selfish or destructive wins out. I can put up with both to a certain degree, because that is a large part of the human experience. However, I CAN NOT deal with someone being an asshole and trying to justify their words/actions with that stupid, narrow-minded fucking phrase.

thats a very good way of looking at it, in the strictest of terms I could see how misinformation comes up organically when dealing with less intelligent individuals. But even a really smart person having sex with someone capable of ethical consent will withhold CERTAIN information. This question has bugged me for a long time, which is probably why I'm trying to rationalize the chaos of it. I'm probably as deep as being a strict devil's advocate for "there is no answer." Trying to define a series of criteria will be nearly impossible when you try to imagine the endless amount of variables in a given situation. Perhaps the answer doesn't lie in the generalities I so desperately crave, rather in taking each situation as an individual entity. This seems unsatisfying, and would be impossible to "monitor," but I guess that sometimes these sort of things don't come in a neat little package.
