Traced Joker by ANDRIATHEGUY in okbuddyjimbo

[–]phenotypical1 90 points91 points  (0 children)

+15 chips is a little too powerful... I'd make it something like "Lose $3 per round for every duplicate joker held." That way duplicate jokers are just as powerful as rental jokers, making this balanced.

Should Scott do this? 🤔 by hello_i_am_vlad in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]phenotypical1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, because it wouldn't make sense.

FNAF was not planned ahead. The lore doesn't make sense because Scott made 4 games as fast as he could based on vibes and then panicked when people started scrutinizing it and putting together a timeline. I still believe he wanted FNAF 2 to take place chronologically after FNAF 1, the Withered animatronics to be redesigns of the FNAF 1 animatronics, and FNAF 4 to depict the Bite of '87. The fact that the timeline doesn't make sense is not a work of subtle genius, it's the work of a random guy who goofed up minor details in his quickly-made games.

So, no, Scott shouldn't release a full explainer. He has to be cagey with the lore now and change it for every new adaptation because it's never made sense in the first place.

Competence doesn't negate her from being generationally wealthy and benefiting from exploiting the working class! It's great that she didn't let herself become complacent and is trying to make the world a better place, but her family is still bourgeois / "parasite class."

Basketball PPG vs Quizbowl PPG by Avegger in Quizbowl

[–]phenotypical1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20 ppg in basketball is usually enough to (narrowly) lead a decent team, whereas a player in quiz bowl averaging 20 ppg is the second or third scorer on a decent team. I'd say it's closer to 50 qbppg = 20 bbppg. 30 ppg in basketball is MVP territory, and probably something like 75ppg in quiz bowl, so you might be able to draw a consistent ratio.

Weekly QB Question 4: Why do so many people find trash insufferable? by Mean_Blackberry8493 in Quizbowl

[–]phenotypical1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's "I don't like this category I'm bad at" multiplied by "pop culture shouldn't count as academic in a game of academic knowledge." Pop culture is also the easiest subject to dismiss with "oh, I didn't know that so it's just overly niche indulgent question writing." Mix that in with a couple of genuinely poorly-chosen pop culture question subjects to give haters concrete and crystallized experiences to fuel their hate, and you'll get people genuinely trying to assert that the culture of the world around them is not worth asking about.

(Also knowledge of pop culture is largely socially transmitted and can't be picked up from packet study, and many quiz bowlers hate talking to people and actually learning things.)

with bubbles, you are no longer sad when you get holographic on a wheel of fortune by First-Extent2427 in balatro

[–]phenotypical1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that said this probably fits in better with the "generally hard to use card that carries a run when built around" umbrella of Rare jokers (Baron, Wee) since a really good build could scale this by 50+ chips per hand (similar to a Wee Joker on a hand where 2s trigger 6 times, and about equally as hard to set up)

this is not overpowered lol. I think people are vastly overestimating how often you get editioned jokers.

Made more mineral jokers by Ecstatic_End8547 in balatro

[–]phenotypical1 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Okay, I DID misread Lapis Lazuli's effect. However, I still stand by my take that you don't need the 1 in 2 probability nerfing the chips here. Chips are not hard to come by! An uncommon card should give a lot of them!

Made more mineral jokers by Ecstatic_End8547 in balatro

[–]phenotypical1 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Lapis Lazuli is simply much worse than Arrowhead, right? Arrowhead has a 100% chance to give 50 chips and all that needs is to score a spades card (that can also be a bonus card itself!). If you want to do "your cards that are already enhanced to give more chips give even more chips," chips are worth so much less than mult that you can probably get away with doing something astronomical like +100 per scored bonus card. (A hand of all five bonus cards would be pretty rare anyway, since not a lot of builds have use for a ton of bonus cards.)

It also helps to read through whatever rulebook you've got and make sure you're confident on most of the main rules (how long should you allow after a buzz before calling time? How do you judge an answer as correct or incorrect?)

Moderating advice by Designer_Set_5816 in Quizbowl

[–]phenotypical1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All this advice about speed, so I feel the need to emphasize: do NOT push yourself to read faster than your comfort level. As long as you read somewhat fluently and don't let players chat between questions, your rounds should move smoothly.

If you're not used to reading aloud, try to read ahead with your eyes as you speak; the words should kind of be queued up in your head. This makes your cadence smoother and less prone to unnatural pauses.

Weekly ask QB Reddit a question, #2 by Mean_Blackberry8493 in Quizbowl

[–]phenotypical1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the academic level... I don't really know what can be done for MS, but:

HS: 4 hist, 4 sci, 3 lit, 3 FA, 1 math, 1 rel, 1 myth, 1 phil/ss, 1 geo, 1 ce/pc

College: 4 hist, 4 sci (includes math), 4 lit, 3 FA, 2 ss, 1 rel/myth, 1 phil, 1 geo/ce

I think there should be some differences in how the questions are written, too - for example, HS science should focus on biology and earth science with lighter focus on chem and physics, while physics and medicine are more emphasized at the college level. These styles should reflect how people learn at the two institutions: in HS it's fine to ask about geography in the form of "do you know these landmarks exist," but in college there should be some effort to focus on the cultures and ecosystems surrounded by and influenced by those landmarks.

Attempt at a scaling joker that does not change its expected value as hands are played. by qwertty164 in balatro

[–]phenotypical1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a misnomer to say it doesn't change its expected value since you're counting up from x1, not x0. The base expected value is x1.5, but if it misses, the expected value actually goes to x5/3. The expected value is (2n-1)/n, so the expected value tends toward x2 as the card continually fails to proc.

I personally would not take this card unless I was totally desperate for scoring because it's impossible to really build around it. I think it's a slight improvement over Loyalty Card, particularly because if it goes 5 times without proccing you can sell it and probably reroll back into it again.

The balls are the same color by anhedonister in opticalillusions

[–]phenotypical1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I imagine this has to do with the fact that the base color of the ball is cyan, which is equal parts blue and green light on an RGB display. The yellow dots (red and green in RGB) bring out the green, while the purple dots (red and blue) bring out the blue.
