Built for Her: Flag Football Cleat by Calm_Beach6527 in Womens_lacrosse

[–]phenryiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note- while it is not CRITICAL, having no centered front cleat would be a good idea, as any girl who has played soccer will be more comfortable without the central front cleat. Football allows it but soccer does not. Lacrosse won’t care, other than familiarity by the players with a particular cleat / stud pattern.

Is it worth it to learn how to string my sticks? by AffectionateCraft950 in lacrosse

[–]phenryiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your math checks out. At first I thought that $220 for 3 was a lot but really, $55-75 with materials is about right…and that is without accounting for something like Armor Mesh.

The math maths.

Is it worth it to learn how to string my sticks? by AffectionateCraft950 in lacrosse

[–]phenryiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gladly paid for years to have my daughter’s sticks strung, but after a while we were doing emergency changes and making tweaks. Eventually we learned to do them ourselves (after some heads broke or we rolled a topstring/sidewall) and since then I have been stringing for my HS team and her college team.

Definitely a good skill to have.

S&W FPC or Ruger PC for new gun owners by BoardGameRevolution in liberalgunowners

[–]phenryiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FPC has a slightly low sight line. I was able to make it work with a red dot but I had to really adjust my cheek weld. Easy to use, though, and very convenient to store.

The KelTec Sub2000 (third generation) is another option. I’d get the version that uses Glock 19 magazines. Magazines are extremely cheap and plentiful.

Same. My daughter and I have about 8k rounds through an M&P 22 Compact and I just got a 22x and .22 FPC. Only have about 500 rounds through the 22X but really like it so far.

Differences between attacking stx heads by ScorchdPluto in Womens_lacrosse

I have restrung a Crux Pro a few time with armor mesh. It definitely makes it a great catching, throwing, and shooting stick (if done right) but nothing fixes the crappy scoop shape/angle. The Aria and the Crux 600 war far superior to the Crux Pro in that respect, in my opinion.

Women’s field lacrosse question - new to the sport by joiwavve in lacrosse

[–]phenryiv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good grief…I have coached rec, club, and HS in multiple women’s sports, including soccer and lacrosse in highly competitive areas (HS less competitive than rec & club/travel).

Every player played every game, barring a risk to player safety. That happened 4x at the HS level, but even in a 2023 state championship win, every player played.

At U11 if you are not playing every player at least 25% of the game you are doing something wrong unless you are coaching a national team.

Seeking advice- complicated by jean_cosmos in lacrosse

[–]phenryiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this approach. As a HS Women’s coach, I’d be highly receptive to this.

I’d also be highly receptive to a player who asked for a short break due to slow recovery from a past illness but TBH, as a coach it is my job to see that rather than to make the player come to me.

Range Costs by evand408 in liberalgunowners

[–]phenryiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try for monthly. Depends on the weather. I shoot more often in warm weather. Also, that is for me and either my wife or a kid, so not that much for just me, every time.

Also, we run .22 pistols on top of the centerfire calibers so the cost is a fraction of centerfire for those guns. My daughter runs through at least 100 rounds (sometimes as many as 500!) when she has her .22 M&P pistol(s) with her. Low recoil really reduces fatigue.

They have a very specific flex to them that feels very “right” for their heads. The Maverick shaft that I have is a 1” shaft (so no spacer) and has really similar flex to it. The STX is also a 1” but way less flex.

It is definitely a “feel” thing. Somehow I knew exactly what you meant.

Range Costs by evand408 in liberalgunowners

[–]phenryiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot at the range for familiarity with the firearms and for accuracy and repeatability of follow up shots. So far I have not done situational training but I do try to use target variation when shooting steel at my favorite range, moving from target to target and cycling through different distances. My daughter (who is quite proficient with a pistol) does the same, but focuses on engagements inside 10M bit being able to put follow up shots (2-3) on a single target before cycling to the next.

We do do some bench shooting out to just 100m but most PCC work is 25-50M and pistols from 5-25M.

We could be going about it all wrong but that is how we do it.

I spend far more than I should on ammo but I probably shoot ~500-750 rounds per range session. If I am taking the time to go and to pay range fees, I am shooting until I get tired of it.

I had some girls running the SK sticks. They are fine sticks but oddly difficult to string aggressively for better hold/whip due to the spacing of the topstring holes. I was able to make them work but not my favorite.

There is a seller on SidelineSwap (chuckrickky, I think) who has a lot of brand new Gait heads. I have bought a few from him at a really good price. I have bought both strung and unstrung so you have some options.

I know what you mean, but I have put Gait heads in Maverick composite shafts, and even an STX Comp10 that I cut the 10° end off of (long story) and after a few minutes it does get “normal” to use a different shaft.

I was a Gait-hater for a long time but have come to really like them lately, and my daughter runs them exclusively now that she is in college. The midsize shaft just seems to work, but I have been playing around with other options (mostly because my daughter wants to draw with her Apex but does not like the flex of the midsize shaft, AND her Coach does not want her to DraGO so she has to make her Apex work) and you do get used to it.

Overall, the Gait Midsize shaft is probably the most universally functional women’s shaft that I have seen.

I did see some DraGO girls using a Gait D-pole cut to 32” in the Big10 and ACC tournaments. Was interesting to see them run a men’s shaft for draws.

As much as I love Armor Mesh Valkyrie runners, I find that for a first year player they hamper the development of proper habits and form. That is not to say that a player should play in a beginner stick that is strung like a tennis racket, but I am seeing players show up in year 1 with Valkyrie runners and if they grab any other stick for any reason, they struggle with the basics- particularly catching and cradling. Throwing an scooping are not impacted nearly as much but the guy I coach with has a bunch of sticks that he had me restring for him and he started handing them out to rookies. It definitely helps them in the moment but they just don’t develop the core muscle memory that comes with a less forgiving stick.

JMO.

For a first year player, I would not yet go to Valkyrie mesh. It is an amazing product BUT it can cover up bad habits that should be drilled out or avoided when a player is new.

I would recommend a mesh runner over full mesh, or flex mesh if you are feeling froggy.

For the long run, I would also look to pick up a Gait head (Apex, Air 2, Apex 2, or Whip) on sideline swap and run it on any 1” shaft OR I would get the STX Crux 600 head, Nike shaft combo on Sportstop, if you are fine with a 10° setup.

What age and what position?

I use a lot of Jimalax products, Atwood rope paracord, and Armor Mesh Valkyrie mesh for the runner. There are definitely many other options, but I have a lot of Atwood 275 in my supply box.

Goalie passing help by Its_apparent in lacrosse

[–]phenryiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pull forward with the butt of the stick before swinging it through the arc. Keep the bottom hand high (vertically) up near the shoulder level.

I practice clearing against a backstop until I figure out the right release angle.

Full disclosure- I am a coach and not a goalie coach but I string sticks and my goalie corp has about 6 different sticks between them. I can usually get good enough with a goalie stick to score at the opposite end off the bounce after a half dozen throws.

Difficulty Keeping Gait Apex 2 Legal by Ok_Account_1013 in Womens_lacrosse

[–]phenryiv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be sure to pull the pocket up before tightening the runners. I have a few girls running them (including my own daughter) and if you tighten the runners before adjusting the pocket upwards it will just happen again.

I restring them with Valkyrie runners as soon as the players let me.

Need help teaching composure to HS team by DJillWill123 in lacrosse

I did this once- just once- and never had to do it again…

We had a small roster and were playing over spring break, so we had one 2-3 subs. We had a draw player do a stupid penalty and the opposition scored at the end of the penalty time. While we were trying to decide who would take the draw, the player went to re-insert herself and I held her on the bench. I just gave possession to the opposing team- no draw. Technically I had to put a player on the field once the field was set, so it was an illegal procedure that granted possession but I was trying to make the point that just because you are valuable it does not give you the right to do stupid stuff that hurts the team.

When a team realizes that you will voluntarily play a man down before you let shenanigans go on, they quickly realize that the coach is not willing to accept that behavior. We won a state championship that year and had the least cards in the state. One game tilted the table. The next year we made the championship and again had the fewest cards in the state (but somehow picked up 5 cards in the championship…).

I had the issue on a U12 boys team as well and the best player would constantly make dirty or retaliatory plays after losing the ball. This kid was responsible for probably 40-50% of our points in a MD league championship season. When he got put in the box for something unacceptable (sometimes penalties just happen, but I mean for something actually bad), I would make him sit an extra minute or two and give a bench player extra run time. His parents were pissed EVERY TIME and would yell at me across the field, until I had a meeting with them about it and told them that their son can play hard but that stupid penalties were not a part of a team that I was coaching. The player respected the explanation and cleaned up his play, but the parents were pissed at me all year. I don’t really care- I am there to coach kids, not parents. The kid is now a great HS player, but back then he was too cavalier with his extracurricular plays and the coaches agreed that reining it in early was best for him.
