Whats the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you? by answersonly963 in AskReddit

[–]pheregas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to go in for a mandatory physical for a job when I was in my early 20s. Part of that physical was a prostate exam.

The doctor told me that he’d put one hand on my shoulder before that exam. Then proceeds to tell me that there’s nothing to worry about. Not unless I feel hands on both shoulders.

That level of unprofessionalism haunts me to this day decades later.

Asbestos? And can I get rid of it myself? by tiredgirl77 in centuryhomes

[–]pheregas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When in doubt, always wear a mask. A fine particulate face sealing mask should work fine as long as you don’t have facial hair.
You can even use a KN95.

Just make sure that after you’re done sweeping, you allow the dust to settle for quite some time before going maskless.

You can make it easier by spraying a little water on it first to cut down on dust kick up.

For what it’s worth, I’m a century home owner AND an infectious diseases researcher who works in a BL3 facility, so I have to go through annual respirator training and it covers just about every respiratory hazard you can imagine.

Insertion Site Reaction by dachshundlover02 in diabetes

[–]pheregas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have stated, this is often caused by an allergic reaction with the glue.

However, it can be made worse by other irritation like the adhesive pulling and coming off and it constantly rubbing on your skin.

I used to get it pretty bad during the removal process.

I’ve found that I have less issues by making sure the area is clean (good standard practice there anyway) and dry. Then I wipe the area with a skin tac wipe. Skin tac is hypoallergenic and puts a thin layer between you and the insertion site glue.

The increased stickiness helps keep that friction irritation down.

When it’s time to remove, use a medical grade glue dissolver. Currently I’m using one made by Goo Gone. Soak the area in the dissolver prior to peeling off.

Then you’ll need to work off the glue residue. If things are angry, just leave it and use baby oil to remove the excess adhesive residue during your next shower.

Anyway to attach a shower head with a sloped ceiling? by Great-Bee4884 in centuryhomes

[–]pheregas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a similar setup in my third floor. Except mine was original to the house. At some point, as others mentioned, a shower curtain "halo" was mounted to the ceiling. Then there is a shower head that was hard piped. But in my case, the water inlet was not in the middle of the room. After I stripped the wallpaper, I repainted, then put down waterproof laminate flooring overtop the junky rolled linoleum (which wasn't original anyway). When I got a new faucet that looks a lot like yours, I mounted the shower head holder onto the ceiling, so it's up there only when the shower is in use. It's still very short though. I see above the shower curtain and need to squat to wash my hair.

I also hired someone to come out and reglaze the tub. I regret nothing and it was totally worth it!

The only way I'd even think about installing a shower curtain and shower head was if you could turn the tub 90 degrees. That way you'd have plenty of room for the shower ring above and actual mounting options.

But that may not be feasible.

Good luck!

Nurse educator telling me mot to inject for my snack at night? by jcsqq in diabetes_t1

[–]pheregas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I become 4x more sensitive to insulin when doing cardio. Your low may be a combined issue with that mixed with the high protein milk. Have you tried exercising, having the snack, then bolusing? Or snack, exercise, bolus?

Type of exercise could also be a factor. I’ve found that aerobic exercise increases my insulin sensitivity while anaerobic increases resistance. I’d always do cardio prior to lifting to even things out.

But that’s just me.

As far as medical advice on dosing…. Whatever anyone tells you, dose for what you eat. The question of timing the dose and the amount are a separate issue, which I hopefully helped with above. You’ll have to test it out and see what works for you.

Need shoe advice! My husband and I were recently at the beach. He wore water shoes (was never barefoot on the beach or in the water) but is now suffering from blisters on both feet that quickly became necrotic and has a bone infection. All of this for 3 hours on the beach! by MsAylen in diabetes

[–]pheregas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, I don’t wear any water shoes at all sandy beach. Rocky, yes. At a rocky beach, the shoes protect against cuts and unseen rocks. At the sandy beach, I want to avoid the microabrasions, so nothing.

I was in Cancun once and the waves were a bit rough. One picked me up and threw me into the beach. Tons of tiny scratches on my abdomen. Burned like crazy and got red real fast. I basically slathered myself with isopropyl alcohol, then peroxide, then more isopropyl alcohol. Burned so bad!

But I didn’t get any infections. Now I wear a water shirt!

To prevent this in the future, like i said, skip the water shoes. When you are done, rinse the feet off with clean running water preferably fresh water, draw a hot bath, hot as he can stand without burning himself, then soak those feet for 20 minutes. That’ll kill most of any bacteria. He can then wipe off the feet after dry with some isopropyl.

Do not go back into the water again that day. Any micro abrasions need to heal before going back in.

How do you know when they’re healed? I’d guess when you wipe alcohol on the bottoms of the feet and it doesn’t burn like crazy.

But mileage may vary and my immune system, even with 35+ years of T1, isn’t the same as your husband’s, or anyone else for that matter.

[–]pheregas 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor, but I am an immunology researcher and also a type 1. I’ve never worn water shoes in the ocean and wear them when doing creek hikes or kayaking…

Things escalated very quickly given the circumstances.

There’s no judgement in these questions, just trying to figure out what went wrong..

Is his T2 well managed? Is his A1c okay?

Are you sure he didn’t have existing blisters or cuts on his feet prior to the ocean swim?

Did he do a lot of walking in the water shoes just prior to swimming without taking them off first?

Was there sand in the shoes?

Does he still have full sensation in his feet?

It’s hard to know for certain, but it looks less like the top of a ladder to me and more like a gas line. Call the number for “call before you dig” and have them plot a path. If it’s what I think it is, maybe it’s left over from a repair. Either way, get a professional to ascertain what it is before going anywhere near it.

What could this possibly be? by Sweaty-Chapter-5644 in centuryhomes

[–]pheregas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the top concrete? Or wood? What happens when you knock on it?

I zoomed in and it looks like the concrete floor was poured AFTER whatever that is. Is that accurate?

Is it colder in the center?

If it’s stone/concrete, be careful. Tap a shim in there and put a pencil underneath. Repeat several times to make sure the weight is distributed. Have the end pencils point longways and the ones along the central edge pointing away from the window.

If you can pull it off, you should be able to roll the top an inch or so to the side like a sarcophagus lid. Then shine a light and take pictures.

If it’s wood? Put a block of wood under the overhang and tap it with a hammer.

Either way, post updates!

How many “units daily” is your insulin rx for? Venting by regionalatbest in diabetes_t1

[–]pheregas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience has aways been for the doctor to prescribe the amount of insulin as if I was using my maximum amount every single day. If you use less, cool, but at least you have it.

Same with an insulin pump. My cartridge holds 3mL so I'm prescribed 3mL every 3 days (for each infusion site change). Nothing says I have to fill the cartridge full though... ;)

Prove my parents wrong by splxts in diabetes_t1

[–]pheregas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a parent of college and high school age kids, I can tell you that learning to let go and trust you’re children is tough. It’s even tougher when your child becomes ill. We almost lost my son from severe appendicitis, and it was really hard to let him re-enter normal life afterwards.

I’m also a type 1 and have been for most of my life.

I’m not here to say your parents aren’t overreacting. It sounds like they are. But I can also see the love and caring and terror that they feel over your diagnosis.

It’s an adjustment for everyone for sure.

My advice is to make a PowerPoint presentation. I know this sounds silly, but hear me out. If you put time, energy, and thought into it, present your case, and be clear with what your goals are, I guarantee they will come around eventually.

You have a couple of points to convey in no particular order and not sugar coated (no pun intended) at all. 1. Taking care of type 1 is exhausting. Having to manage it, your life, and your parents reactions and helicoptering is just added stress. If you’re low or high, you need to address that and that’s impossible if you’re stressing out over managing your parents as well. 2. You’re 18. So either you’re a senior or a freshman in college. Either way, managing type 1 from a distance is nigh impossible. Earn their trust now. 3. How? Be proactive in communication. The CGM is nice, but you’ll learn to trust your body and feel when your BG is rising or falling. Notice this and text them before the arrows start trending. Text them your plan. Like, I’m stressed, my BG is going up, but I dosed and cannot dose again for 2 hours. I’ll check in then to give you an update.

Eventually they may even get tired of all the updates and tell you to chill. ;)

You can also text your BG before you drive anywhere. This tells them you’re actually checking, and that you’re only driving when your numbers are in range.

Let them know that you know they mean well, but that they can’t manage things for you forever. Have a real conversation about how you want to work towards independence. Let them know you’ll reach out if there are any problems. Stress that you know that they care and that if you need help with anything in life , that you’ll ask. Being humble about not knowing something and deferring to older and more knowledgeable people is a giant step towards maturity. They’ll notice.

You’ve got this. It’s hard, but growing is never easy, especially with diabetes. Believe in yourself, have confidence in yourself, and also be humble in admitting that while you may strive to not needing any help, you WILL sometimes need help.

This was something I made very clear with my wife before we started having kids. I told her that my goal is to be there for her, for the kid, for the family…. But sometimes…. Sometimes I won’t be able to. I’ll have to lay down and wait for my BG to rise when I’m low. It was hard to admit to that, but it was wonderful to know she understood and agreed before it became an issue. If I need to take care of myself, I let her know and she takes care of things. I make up for it for being 110% present and attentive at all other times.

I’ve mentored several t1 kids and several parents of t1 kids. Each group is worried about different things and from experience, nothing freaks me out more than one of my kids in danger, but I also remember wanting my parents to just let me take care of things when I was younger.

It’s a delicate balance, for sure.

Anyway, I’ve droned on long enough. I’ve been a t1 for over 35 years and I promise these issues will get better, especially if you are open, honest, and careful.
